1 Ora, no décimo quinto ano do reinado de Tibério César, sendo Pôncio Pilatos governador da Judeia, e Herodes sendo o tetrarca da Galileia, e seu irmão Filipe, tetrarca da Itureia e da região de Traconites, e Lisânias, tetrarca de Abilene,2 sendo Anás e Caifás sumos sacerdotes, veio a palavra de Deus até João, filho de Zacarias, no deserto.3 E ele percorreu toda a região ao redor do Jordão, pregando o batismo do arrependimento para remissão dos pecados;4 conforme está escrito no livro das palavras do profeta Isaías, dizendo: A voz de um clamando no deserto: Preparai o caminho do ­Senhor, faça seus caminhos retos.5 Todo vale se encherá, e todo monte e colina serão reduzidos; o que é torto será feito reto, e os caminhos acidentados serão aplanados;6 e toda carne verá a salvação de Deus.7 Então, ele dizia às multidões que vinham para ser batizadas por ele: Ó geração de víboras, quem vos advertiu para fugir da ira vindoura?8 Produzi, pois, frutos dignos de arrependimento, e não comeceis a dizer dentro de vós mesmos: Nós temos a Abraão por nosso pai; porque eu vos digo: Que destas pedras, Deus pode levantar filhos a Abraão.9 E também agora está posto o machado à raiz das árvores; toda árvore, portanto, que não produz bom fruto é cortada, e lançada no fogo.10 E o povo perguntava-lhe, dizendo: Então, o que nós faremos?11 Ele respondendo, disse-lhes: Aquele que tiver duas túnicas, reparta com o que não tem; e aquele que tem alimentos, faça o mesmo.12 Então, vieram também os publicanos para serem batizados e disseram-lhe: Mestre, o que nós faremos?13 E ele disse-lhes: Não cobreis além daquilo que vos foi designado.14 E também os soldados perguntaram-lhe, dizendo: E nós, o que faremos? E ele lhes disse: Não pratiqueis violência a nenhum homem, nem acuseis ninguém falsamente, e contentai-vos com o vosso salário.15 E, enquanto o povo estava em expectativa, e todos os homens meditavam em seus corações sobre João, se ele era o Cristo ou não,16 João respondeu, dizendo a todos: Em verdade, eu vos batizo com água, mas vem o que é mais poderoso do que eu, do qual não sou digno de desatar as correias de seus calçados; ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo;17 cuja a pá está em sua mão, e ele limpará cuidadosamente a sua eira, e recolherá o trigo ao seu celeiro; mas ele queimará a palha no fogo inextinguível.18 E muitas outras coisas em sua exortação ele pregava ao povo.19 Mas Herodes, o tetrarca, sendo repreendido por ele, por causa de Herodias, esposa de seu irmão Filipe, e por todas as maldades que Herodes havia feito,20 acrescentou a todas elas ainda esta, a de prender João na prisão.21 Ora, quando todo o povo fora batizado, aconteceu que Jesus também foi batizado, e orando, o céu foi aberto,22 e o Espírito Santo desceu como uma pomba em forma corpórea sobre ele, e uma voz veio do céu, dizendo: Tu és o meu Filho amado, em ti eu me comprazo.23 E Jesus, ele mesmo, iniciou em seus quase trinta anos de idade, sendo (como se supunha) o filho de José, que era filho de Eli,24 que era filho de Matate, que era filho de Levi, que era filho de Melqui, que era filho de Janai, que era filho de José,25 que era filho de Matatias, que era filho de Amós, que era filho de Naum, que era filho de Esli, que era filho de Nagai,26 que era filho de Maate, que era filho de Matatias, que era filho de Semei, que era filho de José, que era filho de Judá,27 que era filho de Joanã, que era filho de Resá, que era filho de Zorobabel, que era filho de Salatiel, que era filho de Neri,28 que era filho de Melqui, que era filho de Adi, que era filho de Cosã, que era filho de Elmadã, que era filho de Er,29 que era filho de Josué, que era filho de Eliézer, que era filho de Jorim, que era filho de Matate, que era filho de Levi,30 que era filho de Simeão, que era filho de Judá, que era filho de José, que era filho de Jonã, que era filho de Eliaquim,31 que era filho de Meleá, que era filho de Mená, que era filho de Matatá, que era filho de Natã, que era filho de Davi,32 que era filho de Jessé, que era filho de Obede, que era filho de Boaz, que era filho de Salmom, que era filho de Naassom,33 que era filho de Aminadabe, que era filho de Arão, que era filho de Esrom, que era filho de Perez, que era filho de Judá,34 que era filho de Jacó, que era filho de Isaque, que era filho de Abraão, que era filho de Terá, que era filho de Nacor,35 que era filho de Serugue, que era filho de Ragaú, que era filho de Faleque, que era filho de Eber, que era filho de Salá,36 que era filho de Cainã, que era filho de Arfaxade, que era filho de Sem, que era filho de Noé, que era filho de Lameque,37 que era filho de Matusalém, que era filho de Enoque, que era filho de Jarede, que era filho de Maalalel, que era filho de Cainã,38 que era filho de Enos, que era filho de Sete, que era filho de Adão, que era filho de Deus.

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,2 while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the Word of God came upon John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching an immersion of repentance for the remission of sins,4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.5 Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill made low; the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough ways level;6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.7 Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be immersed by him, Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.9 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.10 So the multitudes asked him, saying, What shall we do then?11 He answered and said to them, He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.12 Then tax collectors also came to be immersed, and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do?13 And he said to them, Collect no more than what is appointed for you.14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, And what shall we do? So he said to them, Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether or not he was the Christ,16 John answered, saying to them all, I indeed immerse you in water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loosen. He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire.17 His winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people.19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.21 Now when all the people were immersed, it came to pass that Jesus also was immersed; and while He prayed, the Heaven was opened.22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven which said, You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.23 And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph,25 the son of Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah,27 the son of Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er,29 the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim,31 the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David,32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan,38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
