1 E o SENHOR falou a Moisés, dizendo:2 Envia homens, para que possam examinar a terra de Canaã, que darei aos filhos de Israel; de cada tribo de seus pais, enviarás um homem, sendo cada um governante entre eles.3 E Moisés, de acordo com a ordem do SENHOR, os enviou, do deserto de Parã; todos esses homens eram cabeças dos filhos de Israel.4 E eram estes os seus nomes: da tribo de Rúben, Samua, filho de Zacur;5 da tribo de Simeão, Safate, filho de Hori;6 da tribo de Judá, Calebe, filho de Jefoné;7 da tribo de Issacar, Jigeal, filho de José;8 da tribo de Efraim, Oseias, filho de Num;9 da tribo de Benjamim, Palti, filho de Rafu;10 da tribo de Zebulom, Gadiel, filho de Sodi;11 da tribo de José, pela tribo de Manassés, Gadi, filho de Susi;12 da tribo de Dã, Amiel, filho de Gemali;13 da tribo de Aser, Setur, filho de Micael;14 da tribo de Naftali, Nabi, filho de Vofsi;15 da tribo de Gade, Geuel, filho de Maqui.16 Estes são os nomes dos homens que Moisés enviou a examinar aquela terra; e Moisés deu a Oseias, filho de Num, o nome de Josué.17 E Moisés mandou espiar a terra de Canaã; e lhes disse: Segui pelo caminho do sul, e subi à montanha.18 E vede como é a terra, e como é o povo que ali habita, se é forte ou fraco, se são poucos ou muitos.19 E como é a terra em que habitam, se é boa ou má, e como são as cidades em que habitam, se em tendas ou em fortalezas.20 E como é a terra, se é repleta ou estéril, se há matas ou não. E tende bom ânimo e trazei do fruto da terra. Era aquele tempo o tempo das primícias das uvas.21 Assim, subiram e examinaram a terra, desde o deserto de Zim até Reobe, à entrada de Hamate.22 E subiram pelo sul e foram até Hebrom, onde estavam Aimã, Sesai e Talmai, os filhos de Anaque; Hebrom foi edificada sete anos antes de Zoã, no Egito.23 E foram até ao ribeiro de Escol e ali cortaram um ramo com um cacho de uvas, e o trouxeram dois homens em uma vara, e trouxeram também romãs e figos.24 Esse lugar foi chamado o ribeiro de Escol, por causa do cacho de uvas que cortaram os filhos de Israel.25 E voltaram de examinar a terra, depois de quarenta dias.26 E vieram até Moisés, e Arão, e à toda a congregação dos filhos de Israel, em Cades, no deserto de Parã, e lhes deram a informação, e a toda a congregação, e lhes mostraram os frutos da terra.27 E contaram-lhe, e disseram: Fomos à terra para onde tu nos enviaste; e verdadeiramente mana leite e mel; e este é o seu fruto.28 Todavia, é forte o povo que habita na terra, e as cidades são fortificadas e mui grandes; além disso, vimos ali os filhos de Anaque.29 Os amalequitas habitam na terra do sul; e os heteus, os jebuseus e os amorreus habitam nas montanhas; e os cananeus habitam junto ao mar e à margem do Jordão.30 E Calebe fez com que o povo se calasse diante de Moisés e disse: Subamos imediatamente, e possuamos a terra, porque somos capazes de conquistá-la.31 Mas os homens que haviam subido com ele disseram: Não poderemos subir contra aquele povo, porque são mais fortes do que nós.32 E apresentaram, diante dos filhos de Israel, maus relatos sobre a terra que haviam examinado, e disseram: A terra pela qual passamos para examiná-la é uma terra que devora os seus moradores; e todo o povo que vimos nela são homens de grande estatura.33 E ali vimos os gigantes, os filhos de Anaque, que são descendentes de gigantes; e éramos aos nossos próprios olhos como gafanhotos, e assim éramos aos seus olhos.

1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,2 Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the mouth of Jehovah, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.4 Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;11 from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way into the south, and go up into the mountains,18 and see what the land is: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many;19 whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds;20 whether the land is fat or lean; and whether there are forests there or not. Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath.22 And they went up through the South and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, those born to Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)23 And they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.24 The place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down there.25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.26 And they departed and came to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.27 And they reported to him and said: We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.28 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very great; moreover we saw those born of Anak there.29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and beside the Jordan.30 And Caleb silenced the people before Moses, and said, Let us arise to go up and take possession, for we are able to prevail.31 But the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.33 There we saw the giants, the sons of Anak of the giants; and we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes.
