7 Little children, let no one deceive you. 11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another, 12 unlike Cain,  * 3:12 Gn 4:1; Jd 11 who was of the evil one  * 3:12 2Th 3:3 and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates  * 3:13 Jn 17:14 you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commands  * 3:22 Mk 7:8; Jn 14:15; 1Jn 2:3; 5:2 and do what is pleasing in his sight. 23 Now this is his command: that we believe in the name  * 3:23 Ps 33:21; Is 50:10; Jn 1:12; 3:18; 1Jn 5:13 of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps his commands remains in him,  * 3:24 Lk 11:13; Jn 15:4–7; Ac 5:32; 15:8 and he in him. And the way we know that he remains in us  * 3:24 Jn 6:56 is from the Spirit  * 3:24 Rm 8:9–16 he has given us.
