1. KJV King James Version

   11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

2. NIV New International Version

   11 I have seen something else under the sun:

   The race is not to the swift

   or the battle to the strong,

   nor does food come to the wise

   or wealth to the brilliant

   or favor to the learned;

   but time and chance happen to them all.

3. ESV English Standard Version

   11 *ch. 4:1,7Again I saw that under the sun *Amos 2:14,15;[Rom. 9:16] the race is not to the swift, nor *[2 Chr. 20:15;Jer. 9:23] the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and *[1 Kgs. 22:34] chance *See ch. 2:14happen to them all.

4. NLT New Living Translation

   11 I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

5. NKJV Nova Versão King James

   11 I returned *Jer. 9:23; Amos 2:14, 15and saw under the sun that—

   The race is not to the swift,

   Nor the battle to the strong,

   Nor bread to the wise,

   Nor riches to men of understanding,

   Nor favor to men of skill;

   But time and *1 Sam. 6:9chance happen to them all.

6. NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

   11 I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning, nor favor to the skillful; for time and chance overtake them all.

7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

   11 I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skillful: but time and chance in all.

8. MSG The Message

   11 I took another walk around the neighborhood and realized that on this earth as it is—

   The race is not always to the swift,

   Nor the battle to the strong,

   Nor satisfaction to the wise,

   Nor riches to the smart,

   Nor grace to the learned.

   Sooner or later bad luck hits us all.
