Mary’s Praise

46 And Mary said:

My soul magnifies the Lord,  * 1:46–53 1Sm 2:1–10

47 and my spirit rejoices  * 1:47 Ps 35:9; Hab 3:18 in God my Savior,  * 1:47 1Tm 1:1; 2:3; Ti 1:3; 2:10; 3:4; Jd 25

48 because he has looked with favor

on the humble condition of his servant.

Surely, from now on all generations

will call me blessed,  * 1:48 Lk 11:27

49 because the Mighty One  * 1:49 Ps 89:8; Zph 3:17

has done great things for me,  * 1:49 Ps 71:19; 126:2–3

and his name  * 1:49 Lv 20:3; 22:2,32; 1Ch 16:10,35; 29:16; Ps 30:4; 99:3; 103:1; 111:9; Is 57:15 is holy.

50 His mercy is from generation to generation  * 1:50 Ps 100:5; 103:11,17

on those who fear him.

51 He has done a mighty deed with his arm;  * 1:51 Ps 89:10; 98:1; 118:15

he has scattered the proud

because of the thoughts of their hearts;  * 1:51 Lk 2:35; 9:47

52 he has toppled the mighty from their thrones

and exalted the lowly.  * 1:52 1Sm 2:7–8

53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things  * 1:53 Ps 34:10; 107:9; Lk 6:21,24–25

and sent the rich away empty.

54 He has helped his servant Israel,

remembering his mercy

55 to Abraham and his descendants  * 1:55 Or offspring; lit seed  forever,  * 1:55 Gn 17:9,15; 21:12

just as he spoke to our ancestors.
