Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit  1:67 Lk 1:41 and prophesied 1:67 Jl 2:28

68 Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel 1:68 Ps 41:13

because he has visited

and provided redemption for his people 1:68 Lk 1:71; 2:38; Heb 9:12

69 He has raised up horn of salvation for us  1:69 1Sm 2:1,10; Ps 18:2; 89:17; 132:17; Ezk 29:21

in the house of his servant David 1:69 2Sm 7:26; Ps 89:3,20; Ezk 34:23–24; 37:24–25

70 just as he spoke by the mouth

of his holy prophets in ancient times 1:70 2Kg 21:10; Hs 12:10; Ac 3:21; Rm 1:2; Heb 1:1

71 salvation from our enemies

and from the hand of those who hate us.

72 He has dealt mercifully with our ancestors  1:72 Mc 7:20

and remembered his holy covenant  1:72 Ps 105:8–9,42; 106:45  

73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham 1:73 Gn 22:16–17; Heb 6:13

to grant that we,

74 having been rescued

from the hand of our enemies,

would serve him without fear

75 in holiness and righteousness

in his presence all our days.

76 And you, child, will be called

a prophet of the Most High 1:76 Mt 11:9

for you will go before the Lord

to prepare his ways 1:76 Lk 1:17; Is 40:3; Mal 3:1

77 to give his people knowledge of salvation

through the forgiveness of their sins 1:77 Jr 31:34; Mk 1:4

78 Because of our God’s merciful compassion,

the dawn from on high  1:78 Is 58:8; Jr 23:5; Zch 3:8; 6:12 LXX; Mal 4:2; Lk 24:49; Eph 4:8; 2Pt 1:19 will visit us

79 to shine on those who live in darkness

and the shadow of death 1:79 Is 9:2; 60:2–3

to guide our feet into the way of peace.
