The 22:1–2 Mt 26:1–5; Mk 14:1–2 Festival of Unleavened Bread, 22:1 Ex 23:15 which is called Passover, 22:1 Ex 12:11; Jn 6:4; 11:55; 13:1 was approaching. 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, 22:2 Mt 12:14; 21:46 because they were afraid of the people. 22:2 Lk 19:47–48; 20:19
Then 22:3–6 Mt 26:14–16; Mk 14:10–11 Satan entered Judas, 22:3 Jn 13:2,27; Ac 5:3 called Iscariot, 22:3 Lk 6:16 who was numbered among the Twelve. 4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police 22:4 Lk 22:52; Ac 4:1; 5:24,26; 16:20,22,35–36,38 how he could hand him over 22:4 Mk 9:31 to them. 5 They were glad and agreed to give him silver. 22:5 Or money6 So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present.
Then 22:7–13 Mt 26:17–19; Mk 14:12–16 the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 22:7 Ex 12:21; 1Co 5:78 Jesus sent Peter and John, 22:8 Ac 3:1; 8:14 saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
"Where do you want us to prepare it? " they asked him.
"Listen," he said to them, "when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters.11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples? " ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. 22:12 Ac 1:13Make the preparations there."
So they went and found it just as he had told them, 22:13 Lk 19:32 and they prepared the Passover.
When 22:14 Mt 26:20; Mk 14:17 the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. 15 Then he said to them, "I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again 22:16 Other mss omit againuntil it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 22:16 Lk 14:15; Rv 19:917 Then he took a cup, 22:17–20 Mt 26:26–29; Mk 14:22–25; 1Co 11:23–25 and after giving thanks, 22:17 Mt 14:19; 15:36 he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves.18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "This is my body, 22:19 Jn 6:51–53which is given for you. Do this in remembrance 22:19 Heb 10:3of me."
In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, "This cup is the new covenant 22:20 Ex 24:8; Jr 31:31; Zch 9:11; 1Co 11:25; 2Co 3:6; Heb 7:22; 8:8,13; 9:15; 12:24; 13:20in my blood, 22:20 1Co 10:16which is poured out for you. 22:19–20 Other mss omit which is given for you (v. 19) through the end of v. 2021 But 22:21–23 Mt 26:21–24; Mk 14:18–21; Jn 13:18–26look, the hand of the one betraying me is at the table with me. 22:21 Ps 41:922 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined, 22:22 Ac 2:23; 10:42; 17:26,31but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! "
So they began to argue 22:23 Mt 21:25; Mk 9:10; Lk 24:15 among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do it.
Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest. 22:24 Mk 9:34; Lk 1:3225 But he said to them, 22:25–27 Mt 20:25–28; Mk 10:42–45"The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called 22:25 Or them call themselves‘Benefactors.’ 26 It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, 22:26 Lk 9:48; 1Pt 5:3and whoever leads, like the one serving.27 For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. 22:27 Mt 20:28; Jn 13:1–1728 You are those who stood by me in my trials. 22:28 Heb 2:18; 4:1529 I bestow on you a kingdom, 22:29 Mt 25:34; 2Tm 2:12just as my Father bestowed one on me,30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. 22:30 Lk 22:16And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 22:30 Mt 19:28
"Simon, Simon, 22:31 Other mss read Then the Lord said, "Simon, Simonlook out. Satan 22:31 Mt 4:10has asked to sift you 22:31 you is plural in Gklike wheat. 22:31 Am 9:932 But I have prayed 22:32 Jn 17:9–15; Rm 8:34for you 22:32 you is singular in Gkthat your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen 22:32 Jn 21:15–17; 1Co 1:9; Php 1:6; 1Th 5:24; 2Tm 2:13your brothers."
"Lord," 22:33–34 Mt 26:33–35; Mk 14:29–31; Jn 13:37–38 he told him, "I’m ready to go with you both to prison and to death."
"I tell you, Peter," he said, "the rooster will not crow today until 22:34 Other mss read beforeyou deny three times that you know me."
He also said to them, "When I sent you out 22:35 Mt 10:9–10; Mk 6:8; Lk 9:3; 10:4without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? "
"Not a thing," they said.
Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one.37 For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: 22:37 Or it is necessary that what is written be fulfilled in meAnd he was counted among the lawless. 22:37 Is 53:12, 22:37 Is 53:12Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment." 22:37 Jn 17:4; 19:30
"Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords."
"That is enough! " he told them.
He went out and made his way 22:39 Mt 26:30; Mk 14:26; Lk 4:30; Jn 18:1 as usual 22:39 Lk 21:37 to the Mount of Olives, 22:39 Mt 21:1 and the disciples followed him. 40 When he reached the place, 22:40–46 Mt 26:36–46; Mk 14:32–42 he told them, "Pray that you may not fall into temptation." 22:40 Mt 6:13; Lk 4:13; 11:441 Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 22:41 Lk 18:1142 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup 22:42 Jn 18:11away from me — nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."
Then an angel from heaven 22:43 Mt 4:11; Heb 1:14 appeared to him, strengthening him. 44 Being in anguish, 22:44 Heb 5:7 he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. 22:43–44 Other mss omit vv. 43–4445 When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. 46 "Why are you sleeping? " he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation."
While 22:47–53 Mt 26:47–56; Mk 14:43–50; Jn 18:3–12 he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? "
When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword? " 50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus responded, "No more of this! " And touching his ear, he healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? 22:52 Lit as against a thief, or a bandit53 Every day while I was with you in the temple, 22:53 Lk 2:46; Jn 18:20you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour 22:53 Jn 12:27; 16:4— and the dominion of darkness." 22:53 Ac 26:18; Eph 6:12; Col 1:13
They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter 22:54 Mt 26:58; Mk 14:54; Jn 18:15 was following at a distance. 55 They 22:55–62 Mt 26:69–75; Mk 14:66–72; Jn 18:16–18,25–27 lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard 22:55 Mt 26:3 and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56 When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with him too."
But he denied it: "Woman, I don’t know him."
After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You’re one of them too."
"Man, I am not! " Peter said.
About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean."
But Peter said, "Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about! " Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. 22:61 Mk 10:21 So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." 22:61 Lk 22:31–34; Ac 3:13–1462 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him. 22:63–65 Mt 26:67–68; Mk 14:65; Jn 18:22–2364 After blindfolding him, they kept 22:64 Other mss add striking him on the face and asking, "Prophesy! Who was it that hit you? " 65 And they were saying many other blasphemous 22:65 Mk 3:29 things to him.
When daylight came, 22:66 Mt 27:1; Mk 15:1; Jn 18:28 the elders 22:66 Or council of elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, 22:66 Lk 9:22; 20:1 convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin. 22:66 Mk 13:967 They said, 22:67–71 Mt 26:63–66; Mk 14:61–64; Jn 18:19–21 "If you are the Messiah, tell us."
But he said to them, "If I do tell you, you will not believe.68 And if I ask you, you will not answer.69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." 22:69 Ps 110:1; Mk 16:19; Ac 7:56; Heb 1:3
They all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God? " 22:70 Mt 4:3; Lk 1:32,35
And he said to them, "You say that I am." 22:70 Mt 26:64; 27:11; Lk 23:3
"Why do we need any more testimony," they said, "since we’ve heard it ourselves from his mouth? "
