3 Then  * 22:3–6 Mt 26:14–16; Mk 14:10–11 Satan entered Judas,  * 22:3 Jn 13:2,27; Ac 5:3 called Iscariot,  * 22:3 Lk 6:16 who was numbered among the Twelve. 4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police  * 22:4 Lk 22:52; Ac 4:1; 5:24,26; 16:20,22,35–36,38 how he could hand him over  * 22:4 Mk 9:31 to them. 5 They were glad and agreed to give him silver.  * 22:5 Or money6 So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present.

7 Then  * 22:7–13 Mt 26:17–19; Mk 14:12–16 the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.  * 22:7 Ex 12:21; 1Co 5:78 Jesus sent Peter and John,  * 22:8 Ac 3:1; 8:14 saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."

9 "Where do you want us to prepare it? " they asked him.

10 "Listen," he said to them, "when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters.11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples? " ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs.* 22:12 Ac 1:13Make the preparations there."

13 So they went and found it just as he had told them,  * 22:13 Lk 19:32 and they prepared the Passover.

38 "Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords."

"That is enough! " he told them.

47 While  * 22:47–53 Mt 26:47–56; Mk 14:43–50; Jn 18:3–12 he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? "

49 When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword? " 50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus responded, "No more of this! " And touching his ear, he healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?* 22:52 Lit as against a thief, or a bandit53 Every day while I was with you in the temple,* 22:53 Lk 2:46; Jn 18:20you never laid a hand on me. 54 They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter  * 22:54 Mt 26:58; Mk 14:54; Jn 18:15 was following at a distance. 55 They  * 22:55–62 Mt 26:69–75; Mk 14:66–72; Jn 18:16–18,25–27 lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard  * 22:55 Mt 26:3 and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56 When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with him too."

57 But he denied it: "Woman, I don’t know him."

58 After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You’re one of them too."

"Man, I am not! " Peter said.

59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean."

60 But Peter said, "Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about! " Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  * 22:61 Mk 10:21 So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."* 22:61 Lk 22:31–34; Ac 3:13–1462 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
