12 Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not Jehovah.

13 And the priests' custom with the people was, when any man sacrificed a sacrifice, the priest's servant came, when the flesh was cooked, with a flesh-hook of three prongs in his hand;

14 and he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot; the priest took of it all that the flesh-hook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites that came there.

15 Even before they burned the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest, and he will not accept sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

16 If the man said to him, They will immediately burn the fat entire, then take as thy soul desires; he would say {to him}, No, but thou shalt give {it} now; and if not, I will take {it} by force.

17 And the sin of the young men was very great before Jehovah, for men despised the offering of Jehovah.

12 Elis Söhne jedoch waren nichtswürdige Menschen, die sich um Jahwe nicht kümmerten,

13 noch darum, was dem Priester vom Volke zukam. So oft nämlich jemand ein Opfer schlachtete, kam, während das Fleisch noch kochte, der Bursche des Priesters mit einer dreizackigen Gabel in der Hand

14 und stach damit in den Kessel oder Topf oder in das Becken oder die Schüssel: was dann irgend die Gabel heraufbrachte, nahm der Priester für sich. So verfuhren sie mit allen Israeliten, die dorthin nach Silo kamen.

15 Und ehe man noch das Fett in Rauch aufgehen ließ, pflegte der Bursche des Priesters zu kommen und sprach zu dem, der opferte: Gieb Fleisch her zum Braten für den Priester! Er will nicht gekochtes Fleisch von dir haben, sondern rohes!

16 Erwiderte ihm aber jener: Zuerst muß man doch das Fett in Rauch aufgehen lassen; darnach nimm dir, was du gerne magst! so gab er zur Antwort: Nein, sondern glich sollst du es hergeben - wo nicht, so nehme ich es mit Gewalt!

17 So war die Versündigung der beiden jungen Männer sehr schwer vor Jahwe, weil sie das Opfer Jahwes gering achteten.
