Esther 7:3,4,9,10

ESV English Standard Version

3 Then Queen Esther answered, ch. 5:8"If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be granted me for my wish, and my people for my request. 4 ch. 3:9;4:7For we have been sold, I and my people, ch. 3:13;8:11to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have been silent, for our affliction is not to be compared with the loss to the king."

9 Then ch. 1:10Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, "Moreover, See ch. 5:14the gallows7:9 Or wooden beam; also verse 10 (see note on 2:23) that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, [ch. 2:22]whose word saved the king, is standing at Haman’s house, fifty cubits7:9 A cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters high." And the king said, "Hang him on that." 10 [Ps. 7:16;Prov. 11:5,6;Dan. 6:24] So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. [ch. 2:1]Then the wrath of the king abated.

3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request: 4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king’s damage.7.4 to be destroyed…: Heb. that they should destroy, and kill, and cause to perish

9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.7.9 gallows: Heb. tree 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified.

  2. NIV New International Version

3 Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. 4 For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king.7:4 Or quiet, but the compensation our adversary offers cannot be compared with the loss the king would suffer"

9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, "A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits7:9 That is, about 75 feet or about 23 meters stands by Haman’s house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king."

The king said, "Impale him on it!" 10 So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king’s fury subsided.

  3. NLT New Living Translation

3 Queen Esther replied, "If I have found favor with the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my request, I ask that my life and the lives of my people will be spared. 4 For my people and I have been sold to those who would kill, slaughter, and annihilate us. If we had merely been sold as slaves, I could remain quiet, for that would be too trivial a matter to warrant disturbing the king."

9 Then Harbona, one of the king’s eunuchs, said, "Haman has set up a sharpened pole that stands seventy-five feet7:9 Hebrew 50 cubits [23 meters]. tall in his own courtyard. He intended to use it to impale Mordecai, the man who saved the king from assassination."

"Then impale Haman on it!" the king ordered. 10 So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai, and the king’s anger subsided.

Now if we had only been sold as slaves, men and women, I would have kept silent, because the distress would not be sufficient reason to burden the king."

3 Then she answered: If I have found Favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please thee, give me my life for which I ask, and my people for which I request. 4 For we are given up, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. And would God we were sold for bondmen and bondwomen: the evil might be borne with, and I would have mourned in silence: but now we have an enemy, whose cruelty redoundeth upon the king. 9 And Harbona, one of the eunuchs that stood waiting on the king, said: Behold the gibbet which he hath prepared for Mardochai, who spoke for the king, standeth in Aman’s house, being fifty cubits high. And the king said to him: Hang him upon it. 10 So Aman was hanged on the gibbet, which he had prepared for Mardochai: and the king’s wrath ceased.

  8. MSG The Message

3 Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor in your eyes, O King, and if it please the king, give me my life, and give my people their lives.

4 "We’ve been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed—sold to be massacred, eliminated. If we had just been sold off into slavery, I wouldn’t even have brought it up; our troubles wouldn’t have been worth bothering the king over."

9 Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, spoke up: "Look over there! There’s the gallows that Haman had built for Mordecai, who saved the king’s life. It’s right next to Haman’s house—seventy-five feet high!"

The king said, "Hang him on it!"

10 So Haman was hanged on the very gallows that he had built for Mordecai. And the king’s hot anger cooled.
