Habakkuk 1:2-4

ESV English Standard Version

Habakkuk’s Complaint

2 O Lord, Ps. 13:1;89:46how long shall I cry for help,

and you will not hear?

Or cry to you Mic. 6:12"Violence!"

and you will not save?

3 See Jer. 9:2-6Why do you make me see iniquity,

and why do you idly look at wrong?

Destruction [See ver. 2above]and violence are before me;

strife and contention arise.

4 [Mic. 7:3] So the law is paralyzed,

and justice never goes forth.

[Job 21:7;Jer. 12:1]For the wicked surround the righteous;

so justice goes forth perverted.

  1. KJV King James Version

    2 O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! 3 Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. 4 Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.1.4 wrong: or, wrested

  2. NIV New International Version

    2 How long, Lord, must I call for help,

    but you do not listen?

    Or cry out to you, "Violence!"

    but you do not save?

    3 Why do you make me look at injustice?

    Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?

    Destruction and violence are before me;

    there is strife, and conflict abounds.

    4 Therefore the law is paralyzed,

    and justice never prevails.

    The wicked hem in the righteous,

    so that justice is perverted.

  3. NLT New Living Translation

    2 How long, O Lord, must I call for help?

    But you do not listen!

    "Violence is everywhere!" I cry,

    but you do not come to save.

    3 Must I forever see these evil deeds?

    Why must I watch all this misery?

    Wherever I look,

    I see destruction and violence.

    I am surrounded by people

    who love to argue and fight.

    4 The law has become paralyzed,

    and there is no justice in the courts.

    The wicked far outnumber the righteous,

    so that justice has become perverted.

  4. NKJV Nova Versão King James

    2 O Lord, how long shall I cry,

    Lam. 3:8And You will not hear?

    Even cry out to You, Mic. 2:1, 2; 3:1–3"Violence!"

    And You will (Job 21:5–16)not save.

    3 Why do You show me iniquity,

    And cause me to see trouble?

    For plundering and violence are before me;

    There is strife, and contention arises.

    4 Therefore the law is powerless,

    And justice never goes forth.

    For the Jer. 12:1wicked surround the righteous;

    Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.

  5. NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

    2 How long, Lord, have I called for help,

    And You do not hear?

    I cry out to You, "Violence!"

    Yet You do not save.

    3 Why do You make me see disaster,

    And make me look at destitution?

    Yes, devastation and violence are before me;

    Strife exists and contention arises.

    4 Therefore the Law 1:4 Or is ineffective; lit turns coldis ignored,

    And justice 1:4 Lit never goes forthis never upheld.

    For the wicked surround the righteous;

    Therefore justice comes out confused.

  7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

    2 How long, O Lord, shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? shall I cry out to thee suffering violence, and thou wilt not save? 3 Why hast thou shewn me iniquity and grievance, to see rapine and injustice before me? and there is a judgment, but opposition is more powerful. 4 Therefore the law is torn in pieces, and judgment cometh not to the end: because the wicked prevaileth against the just, therefore wrong judgment goeth forth.

  8. MSG The Message

    1-4 The problem as God gave Habakkuk to see it:

    God, how long do I have to cry out for help

    before you listen?

    How many times do I have to yell, "Help! Murder! Police!"

    before you come to the rescue?

    Why do you force me to look at evil,

    stare trouble in the face day after day?

    Anarchy and violence break out,

    quarrels and fights all over the place.

    Law and order fall to pieces.

    Justice is a joke.

    The wicked have the righteous hamstrung

    and stand justice on its head.
