Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1 Now ch. 12:1before See ch. 6:4the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that See ch. 12:23his hour had come ver. 3;ch. 16:28to depart out of this world to the Father, ver. 34having loved ch. 1:11;17:6,9-11his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when ver. 11, 27;[Acts 5:3]; See ch. 6:70, 71the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing See ch. 17:2;Matt. 11:27;Rev. 2:27that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that ch. 8:42;16:28he had come from God and See ch. 14:12was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, [ch. 21:7;Luke 22:27]tied it around his waist. 5 Then he [2 Kgs. 3:11]poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" 7 [ver. 36] Jesus answered him, "What I am doing ver. 12;[ch. 12:16;15:15]you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand."8 [Matt. 16:22] Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, [1 Cor. 6:11;Eph. 5:26;Titus 3:5;Heb. 10:22]"If I do not wash you, you have no share with me."9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed does not need to wash, See Gen. 18:4except for his feet,13:10 Some manuscripts omit except for his feetbut is completely clean. And ch. 15:3you13:10 The Greek words for you in this verse are pluralare clean, ver. 18but not every one of you."11 ver. 2;ch. 6:64;See ch. 2:24,25For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, "Not all of you are clean."
12 When he had washed their feet and ver. 4put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ver. 7"Do you understand what I have done to you?13 Luke 6:46You call me Matt. 23:8,10;1 Cor. 8:6;12:3;Phil. 2:11Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, 1 Tim. 5:10;[1 Pet. 5:5]you also ought to wash one another’s feet.15 For I have given you an example, See Matt. 11:29that you also should do just as I have done to you.16 Truly, truly, I say to you, ch. 15:20;Matt. 10:24a servant13:16 Or bondservant, or slave (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface)is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.17 If you know these things, See Luke 11:28;James 1:22blessed are you if you do them.
