The Proverbs of Solomon

1 See ch. 1:1The proverbs of Solomon.

See ch. 29:3A wise son makes a glad father,

ch. 17:25;29:15but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

2 [ch. 21:6;Ezek. 7:19;Luke 12:19,20] Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,

ch. 11:4,6but righteousness delivers from death.

3 Ps. 34:9,10;37:25;[Matt. 6:33] The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,

[Ps. 112:10;James 4:3]but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

4 A slack hand [ch. 6:11;12:24;13:4] causes poverty,

ch. 21:5but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

5 He who [ch. 6:8] gathers in summer is a prudent son,

but he who sleeps in harvest is ch. 17:2;19:26a son who brings shame.

6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous,

but ver. 32the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.10:6 Or but violence covers the mouth of the wicked; also verse 11

7 Ps. 112:6The memory of the righteous is a blessing,

but [Ps. 9:5]the name of the wicked will rot.

8 [Matt. 7:24,25]The wise of heart will receive commandments,

but a babbling fool will come to ruin.

9 ch. 3:23;28:18;Ps. 23:4;Isa. 33:15,16Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,

but he who makes his ways crooked [Matt. 10:26;1 Tim. 5:25]will be found out.

10 Whoever ch. 6:13winks the eye causes trouble,

and a babbling fool will come to ruin.

11 Ps. 37:30The mouth of the righteous is ch. 13:14;Ps. 36:9a fountain of life,

but the mouth of the wicked [See ver. 6above]conceals violence.

12 Hatred stirs up strife,

but 1 Pet. 4:8;[James 5:20]love covers all offenses.

13 On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,

but ch. 19:29;26:3a rod is for the back of him who See ch. 6:32lacks sense.

14 The wise [ver. 8; ch. 12:23] lay up knowledge,

but ch. 18:7the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.

15 ch. 18:11;[Ps. 52:7;Mark 10:24,25]A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;

the poverty of the poor is their ruin.

16 The wage of the righteous leads ch. 11:19;19:23to life,

the gain of the wicked to sin.

17 Whoever heeds instruction is on [ch. 6:23]the path to life,

but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,

and whoever utters slander is a fool.

19 [Matt. 12:36,37] When words are many, transgression is not lacking,

ch. 17:27;[James 3:2]but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

20 The tongue of the righteous is ch. 8:19;16:16choice silver;

the heart of the wicked is of little worth.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many,

but fools die for [Hos. 4:6]lack of sense.

22 [Gen. 24:35;26:12;Deut. 8:18]The blessing of the Lord makes rich,

and he adds no sorrow with it.10:22 Or and toil adds nothing to it

23 Doing wrong is ch. 2:14;15:21like a joke to a fool,

but [ch. 8:30]wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.

24 Isa. 66:4;Heb. 10:27;[Job 15:21] What the wicked dreads Job 3:25will come upon him,

but Ps. 145:19;Matt. 5:6;1 John 5:14,15the desire of the righteous will be granted.

25 When [Job 21:18;Ps. 58:9]; See Matt. 7:26, 27the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,

but ch. 12:3;Ps. 15:5;[Matt. 7:24,25]the righteous is established forever.

26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,

so is the sluggard to those who send him.

27 See ch. 3:2The fear of the Lord prolongs life,

See Job 15:32,33but the years of the wicked will be short.

28 [Luke 21:28] The hope of the righteous brings joy,

See Job 8:13but the expectation of the wicked will perish.

29 [Ps. 25:12;Matt. 22:16;Acts 9:2]The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,

but destruction to evildoers.

30 ver. 25;Ps. 37:22,29;125:1The righteous will never be removed,

but ch. 2:21,22the wicked will not dwell in the land.

31 Ps. 37:30The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,

but the perverse tongue will be cut off.

32 The lips of the righteous [Eccles. 10:12] know what is acceptable,

but the mouth of the wicked, ch. 2:12what is perverse.
