1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: 3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; 5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; 6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: 7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: 8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. 16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

2 Aan: Gods kerkgemeenschap in Korinte – jullie zijn heilig doordat jullie bij Christus Jezus horen, jullie zijn geroepen om je aan Hem toe te wijden – en aan allen die hun en onze Heer Jezus Christus aanroepen, waar zij zich ook bevinden.

3 Ik wens jullie de genade en vrede van God, onze Vader, en van de Heer Jezus Christus toe.

4 Ik dank mijn God altijd voor jullie die bij Christus Jezus horen, want Gods genade is aan jullie geschonken. 5 Jullie zijn rijkelijk voorzien van allerlei onderricht en geestelijke kennis, 6 en de boodschap over Christus is in jullie leven verankerd. 7 Er ontbreekt bij jullie geen enkele van de gaven die God schenkt en jullie kijken uit naar de terugkomst van onze Heer Jezus Christus. 8 Hij zal ervoor zorgen dat jullie tot het einde toe standhouden, zodat er niets op jullie aan te merken zal zijn op de Dag van onze Heer Jezus Christus. 9 God is trouw; Hij heeft jullie geroepen om een persoonlijke relatie te hebben met zijn Zoon, Jezus Christus onze Heer.

10 Broeders en zusters, ik smeek jullie in naam van onze Heer Jezus Christus, elkaar niet tegen te spreken en niet onderling verdeeld te zijn, maar volkomen gelijkgezind en gelijkgestemd. 11 Ik ben namelijk van de huisgenoten van Chloé te weten gekomen, broeders en zusters, dat er bij jullie rivaliteit is. 12 Ik bedoel dat bij jullie de een zegt: ‘Ik ben aanhanger van Paulus’, de ander: ‘Ik ben aanhanger van Apollos’, weer een ander: ‘En ik van Kefas’, en nog een ander: ‘En ik van Christus’. 13 Is Christus dan verdeeld? Is Paulus voor jullie gekruisigd? Zijn jullie in de naam van Paulus gedoopt? 14 Ik dank God dat ik niemand van jullie gedoopt heb, behalve Crispus en Gajus. 15 Niemand kan dus zeggen dat hij in mijn naam is gedoopt. 16 (Ik heb ook Stefanas en zijn huisgenoten gedoopt, maar voor zover ik mij kan herinneren heb ik bij jullie niemand anders gedoopt.) 17 Christus heeft mij immers niet gezonden om te dopen, maar om het evangelie te verkondigen. En om te voorkomen dat de betekenis van Christus' dood aan het kruis zou worden afgezwakt, maak ik daarbij geen gebruik van ingewikkelde woorden.

18 Voor de mensen die verloren gaan is de boodschap over het kruis weliswaar onzin, voor ons die gered worden spreekt ze van Gods kracht. 19 In de Schriften staat immers: "Ik zal de wijsheid van de wijzen te gronde richten en de intelligentie van de intelligenten tenietdoen." 20 Waar zijn de wijzen dan? Waar zijn de kenners van de Schriften? Waar de redenaars van de huidige wereld? Heeft God niet bewezen dat de wijsheid van de wereld in feite dwaasheid is? 21 In zijn wijsheid heeft God ervoor gezorgd dat de wereld Hem niet heeft leren kennen door middel van haar eigen wijsheid. En in zijn goedheid heeft Hij besloten, de gelovigen te redden door middel van de zogenaamde onzin die wij verkondigen. 22 Joden vragen om wonderlijke tekenen en Grieken zoeken naar wijsheid, 23 maar wij verkondigen de gekruisigde Christus. Joden nemen daar aanstoot aan en niet-Joden vinden het onzin, 24 maar voor wie geroepen zijn – zowel Joden als Grieken – is Christus de belichaming van Gods kracht en van Gods wijsheid. 25 Het dwaze van God is namelijk wijzer dan menselijke wijsheid en het zwakke van God is sterker dan menselijke kracht. 26 Broeders en zusters, denk eens aan jullie situatie op het tijdstip dat jullie werden geroepen: naar menselijke maatstaven waren weinigen van jullie geleerd, weinigen hadden macht en weinigen waren van hoge komaf. 27 Maar hetgeen de wereld als onzin beschouwt, is door God uitgekozen om de wijzen in verlegenheid te brengen. Hetgeen de wereld als zwak beschouwt, is door God uitgekozen om de sterken in verlegenheid te brengen. 28 En hetgeen de wereld als onbeduidend of veracht beschouwt, als zonder waarde, is door God uitgekozen om hetgeen voor de wereld wel van waarde is teniet te doen. 29 Daarom is er niemand die zichzelf kan aanprijzen bij God. 30 Het is door Gods toedoen dat jullie bij Christus Jezus horen, die voor ons de belichaming is van Gods wijsheid, van vrijspraak van schuld, en van onze heiligmaking en verlossing. 31 Zo staat het ook in de Schriften: "Als iemand ergens fier op wil zijn, laat hij dan fier zijn op de Heer."
