1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: 2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. 7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s. 8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: 9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. 10 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. 11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present. 12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. 14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: 15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, 16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand. 17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.

1 Op grond van de zachtmoedigheid en welwillendheid van Christus heb ik – Paulus, die zogezegd timide ben in jullie gezelschap, maar een grote mond heb op afstand – het volgende verzoek voor jullie. 2 Wellicht zal ik, wanneer ik bij jullie kom, vrijmoedig en streng moeten optreden tegen sommigen, die van mening zijn dat wij handelen als zondige mensen. Ik wil jullie vragen dat dat niet nodig zal zijn. 3 Want hoewel wij mensen van vlees en bloed zijn, voeren we geen strijd met menselijke middelen. 4 De wapens waarmee wij strijden zijn niet menselijk, maar hebben de door God gegeven kracht om verdedigingswerken te vernietigen. Wij halen foute redeneringen onderuit, evenals 5 alle barrières die tegen het kennen van God worden opgeworpen. Ook nemen we ieder idee gevangen en dwingen het tot gehoorzaamheid aan Christus. 6 En wanneer jullie volkomen gehoorzaam geworden zijn, staan we gereed om alle andere vormen van ongehoorzaamheid te bestraffen.

7 Zien jullie niet wat er gaande is? Als iemand ervan overtuigd is dat hij Christus toebehoort, laat hij dan bedenken dat ook wij Christus toebehoren, net als hij. 8 Dus zelfs als ik iets te veel poch over ons gezag – gezag dat de Heer ons heeft toevertrouwd om jullie op te bouwen, niet om jullie af te breken – dan zal ik niet worden beschaamd. 9 Ik wil niet de indruk wekken dat ik jullie met mijn brieven schrik wil aanjagen. 10 Er wordt namelijk gezegd: "Zijn brieven zijn wel gewichtig en streng, maar zijn persoonlijk optreden is zwak en zijn spreken is beneden peil." 11 Wie zoiets zegt, dient te beseffen dat wanneer we binnenkort bij jullie zijn, we zullen optreden op dezelfde manier als we nu schrijven vanop afstand. 12 Wij durven onszelf niet gelijk te stellen aan bepaalde mensen die zichzelf aanbevelen. We willen ons ook niet met hen vergelijken. Als zij zichzelf als maatstaf nemen en zich dus met zichzelf vergelijken, hebben ze geen inzicht. 13 Wij zullen echter niet te veel pochen, maar ons beperken tot het werkgebied dat God ons heeft toebedeeld – en jullie maken daarvan deel uit. 14 Wij gaan onze grenzen niet te buiten. Dat zou wel het geval zijn geweest als we jullie niet hadden bereikt. Maar wij waren als eersten bij jullie met het evangelie van Christus. 15 Wij gaan niet te ver: wij proberen niet de eer op te strijken van andermans werk. Maar wij hopen dat wanneer jullie geloof toeneemt, ons werk bij jullie nog verder zal groeien. 16 Dan zullen wij het evangelie ook verkondigen in verder gelegen gebieden, zonder de eer op te strijken voor hetgeen bereikt is in het werkgebied van een ander. 17 Immers: "Als iemand ergens fier op wil zijn, laat hij dan fier zijn op de Heer." 18 Want niet wie zichzelf aanbeveelt heeft de proef doorstaan, maar wie door de Heer wordt aanbevolen.
