1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

1 Toen zag ik een engel uit de hemel komen met de sleutel voor de afgrond en een zware keten in zijn hand. 2 Hij greep de draak, de slang van weleer – hij is de duivel en de satan – en ketende hem voor duizend jaar. 3 Hij wierp hem in de afgrond. Toen sloot en verzegelde hij die boven hem, zodat de draak de volken niet meer zou kunnen misleiden zolang de duizend jaar niet voorbij waren. Daarna moet hij korte tijd worden vrijgelaten.

4 Toen zag ik tronen; wie daarop zou zitten zou de macht krijgen om te oordelen. Ook zag ik de zielen van de mensen die waren onthoofd omwille van de getuigenis van Jezus en de boodschap van God; zij hadden het beest en zijn beeld niet aanbeden en het merkteken niet op hun voorhoofd of hun hand gekregen. Zij kwamen tot leven en regeerden duizend jaar lang met Christus. 5 Dit is de eerste verrijzenis. De overige doden kwamen niet tot leven zolang de duizend jaar niet voorbij waren. 6 Zij die aan de eerste verrijzenis mogen deelnemen, zijn gezegend en horen bij God. Over hen heeft de tweede dood geen macht; zij zullen priesters voor God en voor Christus zijn, en ze zullen duizend jaar lang samen met Hem regeren.

7 Na afloop van die duizend jaar zal Satan uit zijn gevangenschap worden vrijgelaten. 8 Hij zal eropuit gaan om de volken te misleiden die in de vier uithoeken van de aarde wonen – Gog en Magog – en hen verzamelen voor de strijd. Hun aantal is als dat van de zandkorrels op een strand. 9 Ze marcheerden over de breedte van de aarde en omsingelden het kamp van de mensen die bij God horen en de door God geliefde stad. Toen kwam er vuur uit de hemel, dat de aanvallers verteerde. 10 Hij die hen had misleid, de duivel, werd in de poel van brandende zwavel geworpen, bij het beest en de valse profeet. Daar zullen ze dag en nacht worden gepijnigd, voor eeuwig en altijd.

11 Toen zag ik een grote witte troon en Hij die daarop zit. De aarde en de hemel vluchtten bij Hem vandaan; zij verdwenen. 12 Toen zag ik alle doden voor de troon staan – zowel de gewone mensen als de hooggeplaatsten – en de boeken werden geopend. Er werd ook een ander boek geopend, namelijk het boek van het leven. Over de doden werd het oordeel geveld dat overeenkwam met hun gedrag zoals dat in de boeken genoteerd stond. 13 Toen stond de zee de doden af die zij bevatte. Ook de dood en het dodenrijk stonden de doden af die zij bevatten en over iedere dode werd het oordeel geveld dat overeenkwam met zijn gedrag. 14 Toen werden de dood en het dodenrijk in de vuurpoel geworpen. Dit is de tweede dood, de vuurpoel. 15 Wie niet in het boek van het leven vermeld stond, werd in de vuurpoel geworpen.
