1 Peter 4:1-5

NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

Keep Fervent in Your Love

1 Therefore, since Christ has 4:1 I.e., suffered deathsuffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because the one who has 4:1 I.e., suffered deathsuffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human lusts, but for the will of God. 3 For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, 4:3 Lit having gone inhaving pursued a course of indecent behavior, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries. 4 In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them in the same excesses of 4:4 Or reckless abandondebauchery, and they slander you;5 but they will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

  1. KJV King James Version

1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

  2. NIV New International Version

1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

  3. ESV English Standard Version

1 Since therefore ch. 3:18Christ suffered in the flesh,4:1 Some manuscripts add for us; some for you[Eph. 6:13] arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for Rom. 6:2,7;Gal. 5:24;Col. 3:3,5whoever has suffered in the flesh [2 Pet. 2:14]has ceased from sin, 2 Rom. 6:14;14:7;2 Cor. 5:15so as to live for ch. 1:14the rest of the time in the flesh Titus 2:12;1 John 2:16no longer for human passions but Rom. 6:11for the will of God. 3 For the time that is past Ezek. 44:6;45:9;Acts 17:30suffices Eph. 4:17-19;1 Thess. 4:5;[1 Cor. 12:2]for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of See Eph. 5:18debauchery, and ch. 2:12;3:16they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready [James 5:9]; See Acts 10:42to judge the living and the dead.

  4. NLT New Living Translation

1 So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.4:1 Or For the one [or One] who has suffered physically has finished with sin.2 You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. 3 You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.

4 Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. 5 But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead.

  5. NKJV Nova Versão King James

1 Christ therefore having suffered in the flesh, be you also armed with the same thought: for he that hath suffered in the flesh, hath ceased from sins: 2 That now he may live the rest of his time in the flesh, not after the desires of men, but according to the will of God. 3 For the time past is sufficient to have fulfilled the will of the Gentiles, for them who have walked in riotousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and unlawful worshipping of idols. 4 Wherein they think it strange, that you run not with them into the same confusion of riotousness, speaking evil of you. 5 Who shall render account to him, who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

  8. MSG The Message

1,2 Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. Then you’ll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want.

3-5 You’ve already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life, partying night after night, a drunken and profligate life. Now it’s time to be done with it for good. Of course, your old friends don’t understand why you don’t join in with the old gang anymore. But you don’t have to give an account to them. They’re the ones who will be called on the carpet—and before God himself.
