1. KJV King James Version

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: 2 That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! 3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.

15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

2. NIV New International Version

1 "Woe to the obstinate children,"

   declares the Lord,

"to those who carry out plans that are not mine,

forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit,

   heaping sin upon sin;

2 who go down to Egypt

   without consulting me;

who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection,

   to Egypt’s shade for refuge.

3 But Pharaoh’s protection will be to your shame,

Egypt’s shade will bring you disgrace.

15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:

"In repentance and rest is your salvation,

in quietness and trust is your strength,

but you would have none of it.

3. ESV English Standard Version

1 "Ah, *[ch. 1:2,4] stubborn children," declares the Lord,

*[ch. 29:15] "who carry out a plan, but not mine,

and who make *ch. 25:7an alliance,*30:1 Hebrew who weave a web but not of my Spirit,

   that they may add sin to sin;

2 *ch. 31:1;36:6who set out to go down to Egypt,

   without asking for my direction,

to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh

and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

3 *[ver. 7; ch. 20:5]Therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,

and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.

15 For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,

   "In *Hos. 14:1returning*30:15 Or repentance and *[Ex. 14:14]rest you shall be saved;

in quietness and in trust shall be your strength."

   But you were unwilling,

4. NLT New Living Translation

1 "What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,"

   says the Lord.

"You make plans that are contrary to mine.

You make alliances not directed by my Spirit,

   thus piling up your sins.

   2 For without consulting me,

you have gone down to Egypt for help.

You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection.

You have tried to hide in his shade.

3 But by trusting Pharaoh, you will be humiliated,

and by depending on him, you will be disgraced.

15 This is what the Sovereign Lord,

the Holy One of Israel, says:

   "Only in returning to me

and resting in me will you be saved.

In quietness and confidence is your strength.

But you would have none of it.

7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

1 Woe to you, apostate children, saith the Lord, that you would take counsel, and not of me: and would begin a web, and not by my spirit, that you might add sin upon sin: 2 Who walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth, hoping for help in the strength of Pharao, and trusting in the shadow of Egypt. 3 And the strength of Pharao shall be to your confusion, and the confidence of the shadow of Egypt to your shame. 15 For thus saith the Lord God the Holy One of Israel: If you return and be quiet, you shall be saved: in silence and in hope shall your strength be. 8. MSG The Message

   1-5 "Doom, rebel children!"

   God’s Decree.

"You make plans, but not mine.

You make deals, but not in my Spirit.

   You pile sin on sin,

one sin on top of another,

   Going off to Egypt

without so much as asking me,

Running off to Pharaoh for protection,

expecting to hide out in Egypt.

Well, some protection Pharaoh will be!

   Some hideout, Egypt!

They look big and important, true,

   with officials strategically established in

Zoan in the north and Hanes in the south,

   but there’s nothing to them.

Anyone stupid enough to trust them

   will end up looking stupid—

   All show, no substance,

   an embarrassing farce."

15-17 God, the Master, The Holy of Israel,

   has this solemn counsel:

"Your salvation requires you to turn back to me

and stop your silly efforts to save yourselves.

Your strength will come from settling down

   in complete dependence on me—

   The very thing

   you’ve been unwilling to do.

You’ve said, ‘No way! We’ll rush off on horseback!’

You’ll rush off, all right! Just not far enough!

You’ve said, ‘We’ll ride off on fast horses!’

Do you think your pursuers ride old nags?

Think again: A thousand of you will scatter before one attacker.

Before a mere five you’ll all run off.

There’ll be nothing left of you—

a flagpole on a hill with no flag,

a signpost on a roadside with the sign torn off."
