Mark 7:11-15

NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

11 but you say, ‘If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is, 7:11 Lit a gift; i.e., an offeringgiven to God),’ 12 you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;13 thereby invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."

The Heart of Mankind

14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:15 there is nothing outside the person which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which come out of the person are what defile the person7:15 Late mss add, as v 16: If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.."

  1. KJV King James Version

11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

  2. NIV New International Version

11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)—12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them."

  3. ESV English Standard Version

11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban"’ (that is, given to God)7:11 Or an offering—12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,13 thus Gal. 3:17(Gk.);[Rom. 2:23]making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do."

14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, Matt. 13:51"Hear me, all of you, and understand:15 See Acts 10:14,15There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him."7:15 Some manuscripts add verse 16: If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear

  4. NLT New Living Translation

11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’7:11 Greek ‘What I would have given to you is Corban’ (that is, a gift).12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others."

14 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. "All of you listen," he said, "and try to understand.15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.7:15 Some manuscripts add verse 16, Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand. Compare 4:9, 23."

  5. NKJV Nova Versão King James

11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, Matt. 15:5; 23:18"Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban"—’ (that is, a gift to God),12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do."

14 Matt. 15:10When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, "Hear Me, everyone, and Matt. 16:9, 11, 12understand:15 There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that Is. 59:3; (Heb. 12:15)defile a man.

  6. CSB Christian Standard Bible

11 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit 7:11 Mk 5:26you might have received from me is corban’ " (that is, an offering  7:11 Heb 5:1; 9:9; 11:4 devoted to God), 12 "you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.13 You nullify the word of God 7:13 Mk 4:14; Lk 8:21; Jn 18:32by your tradition that you have handed 7:13 Jd 3down. And you do many other similar things."

14 Summoning  7:14 Lk 18:16 the crowd again, he told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: 7:14 Mt 13:1315 Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him." 7:15 Some mss include v. 16: "If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen."

  7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

11 But you say: If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban, (which is a gift,) whatsoever is from me, shall profit thee. 12 And further you suffer him not to do any thing for his father or mother, 13 Making void the word of God by your own tradition, which you have given forth. And many other such like things you do. 14 And calling again the multitude unto him, he said to them: Hear ye me all, and understand. 15 There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man.

  8. MSG The Message

9-13 He went on, "Well, good for you. You get rid of God’s command so you won’t be inconvenienced in following the religious fashions! Moses said, ‘Respect your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone denouncing father or mother should be killed.’ But you weasel out of that by saying that it’s perfectly acceptable to say to father or mother, ‘Gift! What I owed you I’ve given as a gift to God,’ thus relieving yourselves of obligation to father or mother. You scratch out God’s Word and scrawl a whim in its place. You do a lot of things like this."

14,15 Jesus called the crowd together again and said, "Listen now, all of you—take this to heart. It’s not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it’s what you vomit—that’s the real pollution."
