Matthew 13:13-15

NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

13 Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.14 And 13:14 Lit for themin their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,

‘ 13:14 Lit With a hearing you shall hear; a Heb idiom You shall keep on listening, 13:14 Lit and but shall not understand;

And 13:14 Lit Seeing you shall see you shall keep on looking, 13:14 Lit and but shall not perceive;

15 For the heart of this people has become dull,

With their ears they scarcely hear,

And they have closed their eyes,

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

Hear with their ears,

Understand with their heart, and return,

And I would heal them.’

  1. KJV King James Version

    13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

  2. NIV New International Version

    13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

    "Though seeing, they do not see;

    though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

    14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

    " ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;

    you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

    15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;

    they hardly hear with their ears,

    and they have closed their eyes.

    Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

    hear with their ears,

    understand with their hearts

    and turn, and I would heal them.’ 13:15 Isaiah 6:9,10 (see Septuagint)

  3. ESV English Standard Version

    13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because Deut. 29:4;Jer. 5:21;Ezek. 12:2;Rom. 11:8;2 Cor. 3:14;4:4;[Isa. 42:19,20] seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, ver. 19, 51;ch. 15:10;16:12;Mark 8:21nor do they understand.14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

    John 12:40;Acts 28:26,27;Cited from Isa. 6:9,10"‘"You will indeed hear but never understand,

    and you will indeed see but never perceive."

    15 For this people’s heart has grown dull,

    and with their ears[Heb. 5:11] they can barely hear,

    and[John 9:39,41]their eyes they have closed,

    lest they should see with their eyes

    and hear with their ears

    and[Rom. 10:10]understand with their heart

    and See Luke 22:32turn, and I would heal them.’

  4. NLT New Living Translation

    13 That is why I use these parables,

    For they look, but they don’t really see.

    They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.

    14 This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says,

    ‘When you hear what I say,

    you will not understand.

    When you see what I do,

    you will not comprehend.

    15 For the hearts of these people are hardened,

    and their ears cannot hear,

    and they have closed their eyes—

    so their eyes cannot see,

    and their ears cannot hear,

    and their hearts cannot understand,

    and they cannot turn to me

    and let me heal them.’ 13:14-15 Isa 6:9-10 (Greek version).

    13 Therefore do I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And the prophecy of Isaias is fulfilled in them, who saith: By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand: and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive. 15 For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

  8. MSG The Message

    11-15 He replied, "You’ve been given insight into God’s kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn’t been given to them. Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears. That’s why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward a welcome awakening. In their present state they can stare till doomsday and not see it, listen till they’re blue in the face and not get it. I don’t want Isaiah’s forecast repeated all over again:

    Your ears are open but you don’t hear a thing.

    Your eyes are awake but you don’t see a thing.

    The people are stupid!

    They stick their fingers in their ears

    so they won’t have to listen;

    They screw their eyes shut

    so they won’t have to look,

    so they won’t have to deal with me face-to-face

    and let me heal them.
