  2. NIV New International Version

1 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2 and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, "What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?"

3 Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, "What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!"

4 Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of4:5 Or have aroused your anger before the builders.

6 So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.

1 4:1 Ch 3:33 in Hebrew Now when ver. 7;ch. 2:10,19Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews. 2 And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of 1 Kgs. 16:24Samaria, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves?4:2 Or Will they commit themselves to God? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?" 3 [See ver. 1above] Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "Yes, what they are building—[Lam. 5:18]if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!" 4 Ps. 123:3,4Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Ps. 79:12Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. 5 Ps. 69:27,28;109:14,15;Jer. 18:23Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.

  4. NLT New Living Translation

1 4:1 Verses 4:1-6 are numbered 3:33-38 in Hebrew text. Sanballat was very angry when he learned that we were rebuilding the wall. He flew into a rage and mocked the Jews, 2 saying in front of his friends and the Samarian army officers, "What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they’re doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices?4:2 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain. Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap—and charred ones at that?"

3 Tobiah the Ammonite, who was standing beside him, remarked, "That stone wall would collapse if even a fox walked along the top of it!"

4 Then I prayed, "Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land! 5 Do not ignore their guilt. Do not blot out their sins, for they have provoked you to anger here in front of4:5 Or for they have thrown insults in the face of. the builders."

6 At last the wall was completed to half its height around the entire city, for the people had worked with enthusiasm.

  5. NKJV Nova Versão King James

Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish—stones that are burned?"

3 Now Neh. 2:10, 19Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up onit, he will break down their stone wall."

4 Ps. 123:3, 4Hear, O our God, for we are despised; Ps. 79:12; Prov. 3:34turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity! 5 Ps. 69:27, 28; 109:14, 15; Jer. 18:23Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders.

  6. CSB Christian Standard Bible

1 When Sanballat  4:1 Neh 2:10,19; 4:7 heard that we were rebuilding the wall,  4:1 Neh 2:17,19 he became furious. He mocked the Jews  4:1 Neh 2:192 before his colleagues and the powerful men  4:2 Or the army of Samaria  4:2 Ezr 4:9–10 and said, "What are these pathetic Jews doing? Can they restore it by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they ever finish it? Can they bring these burnt stones  4:2 2Ch 26:19 back to life from the mounds of rubble? "  4:2 2Ch 26:19; Neh 1:33 Then Tobiah the Ammonite,  4:3 Neh 2:10,19; 6:1,14 who was beside him, said, "Indeed, even if a fox  4:3 Lm 5:18 climbed up what they are building, he would break down their stone wall! "

4 Listen, our God, for we are despised. Make their insults return on their own heads and let them be taken as plunder to a land of captivity. 5 Do not cover their guilt or let their sin be erased from your sight, because they have angered  4:5 Or provoked you in front of the builders.  4:4–5 Neh 6:14; Jr 18:23

6 So we rebuilt the wall until the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had the will to keep working.  4:6 Neh 2:20; 6:1,15

  7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

1 And it came to pass, that when Sanaballat heard that we were building the wall he was angry: and being moved exceedingly he scoffed at the Jews. 2 And said before his brethren, and the multitude of the Samaritans: What are the silly Jews doing? Will the Gentiles let them alone? will they sacrifice and make an end in a day? are they able to raise stones out of the heaps of the rubbish, which are burnt? 3 Tobias also the Ammonite who was by him said: Let them build: if a fox go up, he will leap over their stone wall. 4 Hear thou our God, for we are despised: turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them to be despised in a land of captivity. 5 Cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thy face, because they have mocked thy builders. 6 So we built the wall, and joined it all together unto the half thereof: and the heart of the people was excited to work.

  8. MSG The Message

1,2 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall he exploded in anger, vilifying the Jews. In the company of his Samaritan cronies and military he let loose: "What are these miserable Jews doing? Do they think they can get everything back to normal overnight? Make building stones out of make-believe?"

3 At his side, Tobiah the Ammonite jumped in and said, "That’s right! What do they think they’re building? Why, if a fox climbed that wall, it would fall to pieces under his weight."

    * * *

4,5 Nehemiah prayed, "Oh listen to us, dear God. We’re so despised: Boomerang their ridicule on their heads; have their enemies cart them off as war trophies to a land of no return; don’t forgive their iniquity, don’t wipe away their sin—they’ve insulted the builders!"

6 We kept at it, repairing and rebuilding the wall. The whole wall was soon joined together and halfway to its intended height because the people had a heart for the work.
