Paul Accepted by the Apostles

1 Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. 2 I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain. 3 Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek. 4 This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. 5 We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.

6 As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message. 7 On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised,*2:7 That is, Gentiles just as Peter had been to the circumcised.*2:7 That is, Jews; also in verses 8 and 98 For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles. 9 James, Cephas*2:9 That is, Peter; also in verses 11 and 14 and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

Paul Opposes Cephas

11 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

15 "We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in*2:16 Or but through the faithfulness of… justified on the basis of the faithfulness of Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

17 "But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

19 "For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"*2:21 Some interpreters end the quotation after verse 14.

1 Catorze anos depois, subi novamente a Jerusalém, dessa vez com Barnabé, levando também Tito comigo. 2 Fui para lá por causa de uma revelação e expus diante deles o evangelho que prego entre os gentios, fazendo-o, porém, em particular aos que eram mais influentes, para não correr ou ter corrido inutilmente. 3 Contudo, nem mesmo Tito, que estava comigo, foi obrigado a circuncidar-se, apesar de ser grego. 4 Essa questão surgiu porque alguns falsos irmãos infiltraram-se no nosso meio para espiar a liberdade que temos em Cristo Jesus com o fim de nos reduzir à escravidão. 5 Não nos submetemos a eles nem por um instante, para que a verdade do evangelho permanecesse com vocês.

6 Quanto aos que eram considerados influentes — o que eram, então, não faz diferença para mim; Deus não mostra favoritismo —, tais homens não me acrescentaram nada. 7 Pelo contrário, reconheceram que a mim havia sido confiada a pregação do evangelho aos incircuncisos,*2.7 Ou gentios. e a Pedro, aos circuncisos.*2.7 Ou judeus; também nos versículos 8 e 9.8 Pois Deus, que operou por meio de Pedro como apóstolo aos circuncisos, também operou por meu intermédio para com os gentios. 9 Reconhecendo a graça que me foi dada, Tiago, Cefas*2.9 Isto é, Pedro; também nos versículos 11 e 14. e João, considerados colunas, estenderam a mão direita a mim e a Barnabé em sinal de comunhão. Eles concordaram em que nos dirigíssemos aos gentios, e eles, aos circuncisos. 10 Somente pediram que nos lembrássemos dos pobres, o que fui diligente em fazer.

Paulo se opõe a Pedro

11 Quando, porém, Cefas veio a Antioquia, eu me opus a ele cara a cara, por sua atitude condenável. 12 Pois, antes de chegarem alguns da parte de Tiago, ele comia com os gentios. Quando, porém, chegaram, afastou-se e separou-se dos gentios, por medo dos que eram da circuncisão. 13 Os demais judeus também se uniram a ele nessa hipocrisia, de modo que até Barnabé se deixou levar pela hipocrisia deles.

14 Quando vi que não estavam andando de acordo com a verdade do evangelho, disse a Cefas, diante de todos: "Você é judeu, mas vive como gentio, não como judeu. Portanto, como pode obrigar os gentios a viverem como judeus?

15 "Nós, judeus de nascimento, não gentios pecadores, 16 sabemos que o homem não é justificado pelas obras da lei, mas sim pela fé em Jesus Cristo; assim, nós também cremos em Cristo Jesus para sermos justificados pela fé em Cristo, não pelas obras da lei, porque pelas obras da lei ninguém será justificado.

17 "Se, porém, procurando ser justificados em Cristo, formos por isso tidos por pecadores, então Cristo é ministro do pecado? De modo nenhum! 18 Se reconstruo o que destruí, constituo a mim mesmo um transgressor. 19 Pois, por meio da lei, morri para a lei, a fim de viver para Deus. 20 Estou crucificado com Cristo. Assim, já não sou eu quem vive, mas Cristo vive em mim. A vida que agora vivo no corpo, vivo-a pela fé no Filho de Deus, que me amou e se entregou por mim. 21 Não anulo a graça de Deus, pois, se a justiça vem pela lei, Cristo morreu em vão!".
