1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

2 He replied, "When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.*16:2,3 Some early manuscripts do not have When evening comes… of the times.4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.

5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn’t bring any bread."

8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.18 And I tell you that you are Peter,*16:18 The Greek word for Peter means rock.and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades*16:18 That is, the realm of the deadwill not overcome it.19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be*16:19 Or will have beenbound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be*16:19 Or will have beenloosed in heaven."20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.25 For whoever wants to save their life*16:25 The Greek word means either life or soul; also in verse 26.will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

28 "Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

1 Os fariseus e os saduceus aproximaram-se de Jesus e o puseram à prova, pedindo-lhe que lhes mostrasse um sinal do céu.

2 Jesus disse à multidão:

— Quando a tarde vem, vocês dizem: "Vai fazer bom tempo, porque o céu está vermelho" 3 e, pela manhã: "Hoje haverá tempestade, porque o céu está vermelho e nublado". Vocês sabem discernir o aspecto do céu, mas não sabem interpretar os sinais dos tempos!*16.2,3 Há manuscritos que não trazem os versículos 2 e 3.4 Uma geração perversa e adúltera pede um sinal milagroso, mas nenhum sinal será dado, exceto o sinal de Jonas.

Então, Jesus os deixou e retirou-se.

5 Quando os discípulos foram para o outro lado do lago, esqueceram-se de levar pão. 6 Jesus lhes disse:

— Estejam atentos e tenham cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e dos saduceus.

7 Eles discutiam entre si, dizendo:

— É porque não trouxemos pão.

8 Ciente da discussão, Jesus lhes perguntou:

— Homens de pequena fé, por que estão discutindo entre si sobre não terem pão? 9 Ainda não compreendem? Não se lembram dos cinco pães para os cinco mil e de quantos cestos vocês recolheram? 10 Nem dos sete pães para os quatro mil e de quantos cestos recolheram? 11 Como é que vocês não entendem que não era de pão que eu estava falando? Tomem cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e dos saduceus.

12 Então, entenderam que ele não lhes estava dizendo que tomassem cuidado com o fermento de pão, mas com o ensino dos fariseus e dos saduceus.

13 Quando Jesus chegou à região de Cesareia de Filipe, perguntou aos seus discípulos:

— Quem o povo diz que é o Filho do homem?

14 Eles responderam:

— Alguns dizem que és João Batista; outros, Elias; ainda outros, Jeremias ou um dos profetas.

15 — E vocês, quem dizem que eu sou? — perguntou.

16 Simão Pedro respondeu:

— Tu és o Cristo, o Filho do Deus vivo.

17 Jesus respondeu:

— Bem-aventurado é você, Simão, filho de Jonas! Porque isso não foi revelado a você por carne ou sangue, mas por meu Pai, que está nos céus. 18 E eu digo que você é Pedro, e sobre esta pedra edificarei a minha igreja, e as portas do Hades*16.18 Essa palavra pode ser traduzida por inferno, sepulcro, morte ou profundezas. não poderão vencê-la.*16.18 Ou não se mostrarão mais fortes do que ela.19 Eu darei a você as chaves do reino dos céus; tudo o que você ligar na terra terá sido*16.19 Ou será. ligado nos céus, e o que você desligar na terra terá sido*16.19 Ou será. desligado nos céus.

20 Então, advertiu os seus discípulos de que não contassem a ninguém que ele era o Cristo.

21 A partir daquele momento, Jesus começou a explicar aos seus discípulos que ele tinha que ir para Jerusalém e sofrer muitas coisas nas mãos dos anciãos, dos chefes dos sacerdotes e dos mestres da lei, bem como ser morto e ressuscitar no terceiro dia.

22 Então, Pedro, chamando-o à parte, começou a repreendê-lo, dizendo:

— Nunca, Senhor! Isso nunca acontecerá contigo!

23 Jesus virou-se e disse a Pedro:

— Para trás de mim, Satanás! Você é uma pedra de tropeço para mim, pois não pensa nas coisas de Deus, mas nas dos homens.

24 Então, Jesus disse aos seus discípulos:

— Se alguém quiser vir após mim, negue-se a si mesmo, tome a sua cruz e siga-me. 25 Pois quem quiser salvar a sua vida*16.25 Ou alma. a perderá, mas quem perder a própria vida por minha causa a encontrará. 26 Pois que adianta ao homem ganhar o mundo inteiro e perder a sua vida? Ou o que pode dar o homem em troca da sua vida? 27 Pois o Filho do homem virá na glória do seu Pai, com os seus anjos, e então retribuirá a cada um de acordo com as suas ações. 28 Em verdade lhes digo que alguns dos que aqui se acham de modo nenhum experimentarão a morte antes de verem o Filho do homem vindo no seu reino.
