Proverbs 30

1 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance.

This man’s utterance to Ithiel:

"I am weary, God,

but I can prevail.*30:1 With a different word division of the Hebrew; Masoretic Text utterance to Ithiel, / to Ithiel and Ukal:

2 Surely I am only a brute, not a man;

I do not have human understanding.

3 I have not learned wisdom,

nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.

4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down?

Whose hands have gathered up the wind?

Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is his name, and what is the name of his son?

Surely you know!

5 "Every word of God is flawless;

he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

6 Do not add to his words,

or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

7 "Two things I ask of you, Lord;

do not refuse me before I die:

8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;

give me neither poverty nor riches,

but give me only my daily bread.

9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you

and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’

Or I may become poor and steal,

and so dishonor the name of my God.

10 "Do not slander a servant to their master,

or they will curse you, and you will pay for it.

11 "There are those who curse their fathers

and do not bless their mothers;

12 those who are pure in their own eyes

and yet are not cleansed of their filth;

13 those whose eyes are ever so haughty,

whose glances are so disdainful;

14 those whose teeth are swords

and whose jaws are set with knives

to devour the poor from the earth

and the needy from among mankind.

15 "The leech has two daughters.

‘Give! Give!’ they cry.

"There are three things that are never satisfied,

four that never say, ‘Enough!’:

16 the grave, the barren womb,

land, which is never satisfied with water,

and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’

17 "The eye that mocks a father,

that scorns an aged mother,

will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,

will be eaten by the vultures.

18 "There are three things that are too amazing for me,

four that I do not understand:

19 the way of an eagle in the sky,

the way of a snake on a rock,

the way of a ship on the high seas,

and the way of a man with a young woman.

20 "This is the way of an adulterous woman:

She eats and wipes her mouth

and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.’

21 "Under three things the earth trembles,

under four it cannot bear up:

22 a servant who becomes king,

a godless fool who gets plenty to eat,

23 a contemptible woman who gets married,

and a servant who displaces her mistress.

24 "Four things on earth are small,

yet they are extremely wise:

25 Ants are creatures of little strength,

yet they store up their food in the summer;

26 hyraxes are creatures of little power,

yet they make their home in the crags;

27 locusts have no king,

yet they advance together in ranks;

28 a lizard can be caught with the hand,

yet it is found in kings’ palaces.

29 "There are three things that are stately in their stride,

four that move with stately bearing:

30 a lion, mighty among beasts,

who retreats before nothing;

31 a strutting rooster, a he-goat,

and a king secure against revolt.*30:31 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain.

32 "If you play the fool and exalt yourself,

or if you plan evil,

clap your hand over your mouth!

33 For as churning cream produces butter,

and as twisting the nose produces blood,

so stirring up anger produces strife."

2 "Sou o mais estúpido dos homens;

não tenho o entendimento de um ser humano.

3 Não aprendi sabedoria

nem tenho conhecimento do Santo.

4 Quem subiu aos céus e desceu?

Quem ajuntou nas mãos os ventos?

Quem embrulhou as águas na sua capa?

Quem fixou todos os limites da terra?

Qual é o nome dele e o nome do seu filho?

Certamente você sabe!

5 "Cada palavra de Deus é comprovadamente pura.

Ele é um escudo para quem nele se refugia.

6 Nada acrescente às palavras dele;

do contrário, ele o repreenderá e mostrará que você é mentiroso.

7 "Duas coisas te peço, ó Deus;

não me negues antes que eu morra:

8 mantém longe de mim a falsidade e a mentira;

não me dês nem pobreza nem riqueza;

dá-me apenas o alimento necessário.

9 Senão, tendo demais, eu te negaria, te deixaria

e diria: ‘Quem é o Senhor?’.

Se eu ficasse pobre, poderia vir a roubar,

desonrando, assim, o nome do meu Deus.

10 "Não fale mal do servo ao seu senhor;

do contrário, o servo o amaldiçoará, e você levará a culpa.

11 "Existem os que amaldiçoam o próprio pai

e não abençoam a própria mãe;

12 os que são puros aos próprios olhos

e que ainda não foram purificados da sua impureza;

13 os que têm olhos altivos

e olhar desdenhoso;

14 pessoas cujos dentes são espadas

e cujas mandíbulas estão armadas de facas

para devorarem os necessitados desta terra

e os pobres da humanidade.

15 "A sanguessuga tem duas filhas.

‘Dê! Dê!’, gritam elas.

"Há três coisas que nunca estão satisfeitas;

quatro que nunca dizem: ‘É o bastante!’:

16 a sepultura,*30.16 Hebraico: Sheol. Essa palavra também pode ser traduzida por profundezas ou morte.

o ventre estéril,

a terra, cuja sede nunca é saciada,

e o fogo, que nunca diz: ‘É o bastante!’.

17 "Os olhos de quem zomba do pai

e de quem despreza os cabelos brancos da mãe*30.17 Ou desprezam a obediência à mãe.

serão arrancados pelos corvos do vale

e devorados pelos filhotes do abutre.

18 "Há três coisas misteriosas demais para mim;

quatro que não consigo entender:

19 o caminho do abutre no céu,

o caminho da serpente sobre a rocha,

o caminho do navio em alto-mar

e o caminho do homem com uma moça.

20 "Este é o caminho da adúltera:

ela come, limpa a boca e diz:

‘Não fiz nada de errado’.

21 "Três coisas fazem tremer a terra;

quatro ela não pode suportar:

22 o escravo que se torna rei,

o insensato farto de comida,

23 a mulher desprezada que, por fim, se casa

e a escrava que toma o lugar da sua senhora.

24 "Quatro seres da terra são pequenos,

embora muito sábios:

25 as formigas, criaturas de pouca força,

contudo armazenam a sua comida no verão;

26 os híraces, criaturas sem nenhum poder,

contudo habitam nos penhascos;

27 os gafanhotos, que não têm rei,

contudo avançam juntos em fileiras;

28 a lagartixa, que se pode apanhar com as mãos,

contudo encontra-se nos palácios dos reis.

29 "Há três seres que caminham com elegância;

quatro que se movem com passo garboso:

30 o leão, que é poderoso entre os animais e não foge de ninguém;

31 o galo de andar altivo;

o bode;

e o rei à frente do seu exército.

32 "Se você agiu como insensato e se exaltou,

ou se planejou o mal,

tape a boca com a mão!

33 Pois, como bater o leite produz manteiga

e torcer o nariz produz sangue,

assim provocar a raiva produz contenda".
