Israel at Mount Sinai

1 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, *Num. 33:15they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they had departed from *Ex. 17:1Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before *Ex. 3:1, 12; 18:5the mountain.

3 And *Acts 7:38Moses went up to God, and the Lord*Ex. 3:4called to him from the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 *Deut. 29:2‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how*Deut. 32:11; Is. 63:9; Rev. 12:14I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now *Ex. 15:26; 23:22therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and *Deut. 5:2; Ps. 78:10keep My covenant, then *Deut. 4:20; 7:6; 14:2; 26:18; 1 Kin. 8:53; Ps. 135:4; Titus 2:14; 1 Pet. 2:9you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is*Ex. 9:29; Deut. 10:14; Job 41:11; Ps. 50:12; 1 Cor. 10:26Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a *Deut. 33:2–4; (1 Pet. 2:5, 9; Rev. 1:6; 5:10)kingdom of priests and a *Deut. 7:6; 14:21; 26:19; Is. 62:12; (1 Cor. 3:17)holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."

7 So Moses came and called for the *Ex. 4:29, 30elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then *Ex. 4:31; 24:3, 7; Deut. 5:27; 26:17all the people answered together and said, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do." So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you *Ex. 19:16; 20:21; 24:15; Deut. 4:11; Ps. 99:7; Matt. 17:5in the thick cloud, *Deut. 4:12, 36; John 12:29, 30that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever."

So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Go to the people and *Lev. 11:44, 45; (Heb. 10:22)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. *Ex. 34:3; Heb. 12:20Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot withanarrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain."

14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, "Be ready for the third day; *(1 Cor. 7:5)do not come near your wives."

16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were *Heb. 12:18, 19thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp *Heb. 12:21trembled. 17 And Moses brought th*Deut. 4:10e people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now *Deut. 4:11; Judg. 5:5; Ps. 104:32; 144:5Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon *Ex. 3:2; 24:17; Deut. 5:4; 2 Chr. 7:1–3; Heb. 12:18it in fire. *Gen. 15:17; 19:28; Rev. 15:8Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the *Ps. 68:8; 1 Kin. 19:12; Jer. 4:24; (Heb. 12:26)whole mountain quaked greatly. 19 And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, *Heb. 12:21Moses spoke, and *Neh. 9:13; Ps. 81:7God answered him by voice. 20 Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

21 And the Lord said to Moses, "Go down and warn the people, lest they break through *1 Sam. 6:19to gaze at the Lord, and many of them perish. 22 Also let the *Ex. 19:24; 24:5priests who come near the Lord*Lev. 10:3; 21:6–8consecrate themselves, lest the Lord*2 Sam. 6:7, 8break out against them."

23 But Moses said to the Lord, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, *Ex. 19:12‘Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.’ "

24 Then the Lord said to him, "Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest He break out against them." 25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
