1 Naquele tempo o imperador Augusto mandou uma ordem para todos os povos do Império. Todas as pessoas deviam se registrar a fim de ser feita uma contagem da população. 2 Quando foi feito esse primeiro recenseamento, Cirênio era governador da Síria. 3 Então todos foram se registrar, cada um na sua própria cidade.

4 Por isso José foi de Nazaré, na Galileia, para a região da Judeia, a uma cidade chamada Belém, onde tinha nascido o rei Davi. José foi registrar-se lá porque era descendente de Davi. 5 Levou consigo Maria, com quem tinha casamento contratado . Ela estava grávida,

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
