1 Que as pessoas nos encarem como estando ao serviço de Cristo e tendo ao nosso encargo os seus mistérios. 2 É evidente que se exige a alguém que presta serviços que faça exatamente o que lhe dizem para fazer. 3 Vocês sabem que eu não me deixo afetar pelo que poderão pensar a esse respeito; vocês ou seja quem for. Nem pelo meu próprio juízo a este respeito me deixo influenciar. 4 Aliás, a minha consciência em nada me acusa; mas nem isso me serve de justificação. É o próprio Senhor quem me examinará e me julgará.

5 Por isso, não se precipitem em juízos, antes da vinda do Senhor. Quando o Senhor vier, trará luz sobre todas as coisas, e não apenas as escondidas, para que se veja exatamente o que cada um de nós é no íntimo do coração. E Deus dará a cada um o louvor que merecer.

6 Meus irmãos, tomei-me a mim próprio e a Apolo como exemplos, para ilustrar aquilo que tenho vindo a dizer: o que cada um pensa deve ser submetido ao que dizem as Escrituras. Em relação àqueles que vos ensinam as coisas de Deus, não devem envaidecer-se a respeito de um e mostrar desfavor por outro. 7 Donde vos vem essa presunção de fazer diferenças? Afinal que sabem vocês que não vos tenha sido revelado por Deus? E se tudo o que têm vem de Deus, por que razão atuam como se tivessem realizado algo por vós mesmos?

8 Pensam que já têm tudo de que precisam! Já são ricos! Sem nós, tornaram-se reis! Eu desejaria que estivessem já nos vossos tronos, porque significaria que nós estaríamos a reinar também. 9 Com efeito, por vezes penso que Deus nos colocou a nós, os apóstolos, no lugar mais baixo da escala social, a par dos condenados à morte. Como prisioneiros que vão ser executados, expostos em espetáculo ao mundo inteiro e também aos anjos.

10 Nós tornámo-nos loucos pela causa de Cristo, mas vocês são sábios em Cristo. Nós somos os fracos e vocês os fortes! Vocês são considerados por toda a gente, mas de nós as pessoas riem-se. 11 Até este momento temos passado fome e sede, sem ter sequer roupa suficiente para nos agasalharmos, somos maltratados e perseguidos, e nem temos morada certa. 12 Temos trabalhado duramente com nossas próprias mãos para ganhar a vida. Abençoamos quem nos amaldiçoa. Somos pacientes para quem nos fere. 13 Respondemos com calma aos insultos. Até agora temos sido tratados como a sujeira das valetas, o lixo do mundo.

14 Não estou a escrever-vos estas coisas para vos chocar, mas para vos avisar como a filhos queridos. 15 Porque ainda que tivessem tido milhares de pessoas a ensinar-vos sobre Cristo, lembrem-se que só a mim tiveram como pai espiritual; pois fui eu quem vos conduziu a Cristo, quando vos anunciei o evangelho. 16 Por isso, peço-vos que sejam meus imitadores, fazendo o que eu faço.

17 Eis a razão por que vos envio Timóteo: para vos ajudar nesse sentido. Porque é também um daqueles que eu ganhei para Cristo, um querido filho espiritual, digno de toda a confiança. Ele vai lembrar-vos tudo o que tenho ensinado acerca de Cristo nas igrejas por onde tenho passado.

18 Sei que alguns se tornaram arrogantes, pensando que estou hesitante em ir tratar pessoalmente destes assuntos convosco. 19 Mas o certo é que irei, e em breve, se o Senhor permitir. Então verei se por detrás do orgulho dessas pessoas haverá algum poder espiritual ou se tudo não passa de palavras. 20 Porque o reino de Deus não é só discursos, mas sobretudo o viver pelo poder de Deus. 21 O que é que preferem? Que eu vá repreender-vos com vara ou com amor e bondade?

1 Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. 4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. 6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. 7 For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? 8 Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you. 9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. 11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; 12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: 13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. 14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. 15 For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. 17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church. 18 Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. 19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. 21 What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?
