1 Representantes de todas as tribos de Israel foram ter com David a Hebrom, oferecer-lhe a garantia da sua lealdade: "Somos do mesmo sangue que tu", disseram. 2 "Mesmo quando Saul era o rei, tu eras o nosso verdadeiro chefe. Foi a ti que o Senhor teu Deus disse: ‘Serás o pastor do meu povo de Israel. Serás o seu rei.’ "

3 Então David fez uma aliança diante do Senhor com os líderes de Israel ali em Hebrom e eles consagraram-no rei de Israel, tal como o Senhor dissera a Samuel. 4 Depois David e os líderes foram a Jerusalém ou Jebus, como era habitualmente chamada, onde os jebuseus, os que tinham habitado originalmente na terra, viviam. 5 Contudo, o povo de Jebus recusou deixá-los entrar. Por isso, David capturou a fortaleza de Sião, chamada mais tarde Cidade de David. 6 Ele disse para os seus homens: "O primeiro que matar um jebuseu será comandante-chefe!" Joabe, o filho de Zeruía, foi o primeiro. Por isso, tornou-se general do exército de David. 7 David ficou a viver nessa fortaleza e essa é a razão por que essa área de Jerusalém é chamada Cidade de David. 8 Estendeu a área de urbanização em redor da fortaleza, enquanto Joabe reconstruiu o resto de Jerusalém.

9 David tornou-se cada vez mais famoso e poderoso, porque o Senhor dos exércitos estava com ele.

10 São os seguintes os nomes de alguns dos mais valentes guerreiros de David, os quais também encorajaram os líderes de Israel a fazer de David rei, tal como o Senhor dissera que haveria de acontecer:

11 Jasobeão, filho de Hacmoni, era o líder dos três maiores heróis entre os homens de David. Uma vez matou 300 homens com a sua lança.

12 O segundo desses três foi Eleazar, filho de Dodo, membro do subclã de Aoí. 13 Estava com David na batalha contra os filisteus em Pas-Damim. O exército israelita encontrava-se num campo de cevada e começava já a fugir dos filisteus. 14 Contudo, ele pôs-se no meio do campo, defendendo-o tenazmente e ferindo os filisteus. Em consequência, o Senhor deu-lhes uma grande vitória.

15 Numa outra vez, três homens pertencentes ao grupo dos trinta, foi ter com David, quando este vivia escondido na gruta de Adulão. Os filisteus estavam acampados no vale de Refaim. 16 No momento do acontecimento David encontrava-se numa fortaleza. Uns guerreiros filisteus tinham ocupado Belém. 17 A certa altura, David expressou o seguinte desejo: "Quem me dera poder beber da água daquele poço de Belém que está junto à porta!" 18 Então esses três homens romperam através desse posto avançado dos filisteus, tiraram água do poço e trouxeram-na a David. Contudo, David recusou; em vez de a beber, derramou-a como oferta perante o Senhor. 19 E disse: "Nunca faria tal coisa, Deus! Nunca beberia uma água que afinal representa o sangue destes homens que arriscaram as suas vidas para a ir buscar!"

20 Abisai, irmão de Joabe, foi comandante dos trinta. Certa vez, só com a sua lança, matou 300 soldados inimigos. 21 Era não só o chefe deles como o mais famoso dos trinta. Contudo, não atingiu o prestígio dos três, já referidos.

22 Havia também Benaia, filho de Jeoiada, um valente soldado de Cabzeel. Benaia matou os dois filhos de Ariel de Moabe. Noutra altura, entrou numa gruta e, a despeito do chão estar muito escorregadio, por causa da neve gelada, pegou num leão que ali se tinha abrigado e matou-o. 23 Noutra ocasião matou um egípcio que media 2,5 metros de altura, e cuja lança era tão grossa como uma barra dum tecelão. Benaia dirigiu-se contra ele, tendo apenas na mão uma vara, e conseguiu arrancar ao outro a lança, com a qual acabou por matá-lo. 24 Estes foram alguns dos feitos que deram a Benaia, filho de Jeoiada, quase tanta fama como a dos três primeiros. 25 Era muito famoso entre os trinta, mas não pode rivalizar com o grupo dos três. David fê-lo capitão da sua guarda pessoal.

26 Outros valentes guerreiros entre os homens de David foram:

El-Hanã, filho de Dodo, de Belém;

27 Samote de Harode;

Helez de Pelom;

28 Ira, filho de Iques, de Tecoa;

Abiezer de Anatote;

Ilai de Aoí;

Helede, filho de Baaná, de Netofá;

31 Itai, filho de Ribai, um benjamita de Gibeá;

Benaia de Piraton;

32 Hurai das proximidades do ribeiro de Gaás;
