1 Salomão foi rei de todo o povo de Israel.

2 Esta é a lista dos homens que colaboravam com o rei na administração dos assuntos de Israel:

Azarias, filho de Zadoque, era o sumo sacerdote;

3 Eliorefe e Aías, filhos de Sisa, exerciam as funções de secretários;

Jeosafá, filho de Ailude, era cronista;

4 Benaia, filho de Jeoiada, era o comandante do exército;

Zadoque e Abiatar eram sacerdotes;

5 Azarias, filho de Natã, tinha as funções de administrador-geral;

Zabude, filho de Natã, era sacerdote e o seu conselheiro especial;

6 Aisar chefiava a casa real;

Adonirão, filho de Abda, superintendia sobre os trabalhos obrigatórios.

7 Havia ainda na corte de Salomão doze administradores, um por cada tribo, responsáveis pela tributação daquilo que a população devia fornecer para a casa real. Cada um administrava esse aprovisionamento durante um mês do ano.

8 São estes os seus nomes:

Bene-Hur cuja área de tributação era a região das colinas de Efraim;

9 Bene-Dequer que tinha a área de Macaz, Saalabim, Bete-Semes, Elom-Bete-Hanã;

10 Bene-Hesede com a área de Arubote, incluindo Socó e toda a terra de Hefer;

11 Ben-Abinadabe, que casou com a filha de Salomão, a princesa Tafate, era responsável pela área das serranias de Dor;

12 Baaná, filho de Ailude, era responsável por Taanaque, Megido, toda a Bete-Seã perto de Zaretã, abaixo de Jezreel e todo o território desde Bete-Seã até Abel-Meolá e até Jocmeão;

13 Bene-Geber cuja área era Ramote-Gileade, incluindo as povoações de Jair, filho de Manassés, que estão em Gileade; mais a região de Argobe em Basã, incluindo também sessenta cidades muradas com portões de bronze;

14 Ainadabe, filho de Ido, cuja área era Maanaim;

15 Aimaaz, que casou com a princesa Basemate, outra filha de Salomão, que tinha a área de Naftali;

16 Baaná, filho de Husai, cujas áreas eram Aser e Bealote;

17 Jeosafá, filho de Paruá, que tinha a área de Issacar;

18 Simei, filho de Ela, com a área de Benjamim;

19 Geber, filho de Uri, cuja área era Gileade, incluindo os territórios do rei Siom dos amorreus e do rei Ogue de Basã.

Havia depois um administrador que supervisionava todo este trabalho.

20 Israel e Judá nesse tempo eram uma nação tão numerosa como a areia da praia junto ao mar; todos comiam, bebiam e viviam felizes. 21 O rei Salomão governava um extenso território que ia desde o rio Eufrates até à terra dos filisteus, descendo até à fronteira com o Egito. Os povos destas áreas, que tinham sido conquistados, pagavam impostos a Salomão e estiveram-lhe sujeitos durante toda a sua vida.

22 A provisão alimentar para o palácio real era diariamente de 6600 litros de farinha e de 13 200 litros de cereais; 23 dez vacas cevadas e outras vinte trazidas dos pastos, cem ovelhas, além dos veados, gazelas, búfalos e aves de capoeira.

24 O seu domínio alargava-se a todos os reinos do oeste do rio Eufrates, desde Tifsa até Gaza. E havia paz em toda a terra. 25 Durante o tempo do reinado de Salomão, Israel e Judá, desde Dan até Berseba, viveram em paz e segurança; cada família possuía a sua própria casa com a sua videira e a sua figueira.

26 Salomão possuía ainda 40 000 cavalos, para os seus carros de combate e 12 000 cavaleiros. 27 Em cada mês, como se viu, os administradores forneciam a casa real de alimentos; 28 além de cevada e palha para as estrebarias reais.

29 Deus deu a Salomão grande sabedoria e inteligência, assim como conhecimento tão profundo como as areias nas praias do mar. 30 De facto, a sua sabedoria excedia a de qualquer sábio do Oriente, incluindo os do Egito. 31 Era mais sábio do que Etã, o ezraíta, e do que Hemã, Calcol e Darda, os filhos de Maol. A sua fama estendeu-se a todas as nações vizinhas. 32 Foi o autor de 3000 provérbios e escreveu 1005 cânticos. 33 Interessou-se muito pela natureza, pela vida dos animais quadrúpedes, das aves, dos répteis, dos peixes, assim como das plantas, desde os grandes cedros do Líbano até ao mais insignificante hissopo que cresce nas fendas dos muros. 34 De todos os países vinham pessoas para ouvir a sabedoria de Salomão. Todos os reis da terra mandaram-lhe embaixadores.

20 Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry. 21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.

22 And Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal,*4.22 provision: Heb. bread*4.22 measures: Heb. cors 23 Ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts, and roebucks, and fallowdeer, and fatted fowl. 24 For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him. 25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon.*4.25 safely: Heb. confidently

26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. 27 And those officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing. 28 Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.*4.28 dromedaries: or, mules, or, swift beasts

29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. 30 And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about. 32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. 33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes. 34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
