1 Costuma dizer-se, e com verdade, que se alguém pretende ser líder numa assembleia cristã, esse é um excelente desejo. 2 O líder tem de ser uma pessoa irrepreensível; deve ser marido de uma só mulher, deve ser vigilante, sério, moderado e equilibrado; deve ser hospitaleiro e capaz de ensinar. 3 Também não deverá exagerar nas bebidas alcoólicas, nem ter comportamentos violentos, mas calmo. Tão-pouco deve ser conflituoso, nem ganancioso. 4 Deve governar bem a sua casa e educar os filhos na disciplina e no respeito. 5 Porque se uma pessoa não sabe governar a sua própria casa como poderá ter um cargo na igreja de Deus? 6 Não convém que seja convertido há pouco tempo, pois pode deixar-se levar pelo orgulho e cair na mesma condenação em que incorreu o Diabo. 7 Deve também ser uma pessoa com boa reputação entre os que não são cristãos; de outro modo, arrisca-se a ser vítima de desonra e a cair em laços do Diabo.

8 Também os diáconos terão de ser pessoas dignas, sem dissimulação no que dizem; devem ser sóbrios no uso de bebidas alcoólicas e não se deixar levar pela ganância. 9 Devem preservar as verdades profundas da fé com uma consciência limpa. 10 Devem primeiro ser postos à prova e, se nada tiverem digno de censura, então que os responsabilizem no serviço a que se destinam.

11 De igual modo, as suas mulheres sejam pessoas dignas, não dadas a mexericos, nem se deixando levar por excessos de tipo algum, merecendo confiança em tudo.

12 Os diáconos também deverão ser maridos de uma só mulher, governar bem as suas casas e educar convenientemente os seus filhos. 13 Porque, se derem boas provas no cumprimento deste serviço, ganharão o respeito dos outros e terão maior confiança na sua fé em Cristo Jesus.

14 Estou a escrever-te estas coisas, mas espero poder ir ver-te brevemente. 15 Se demorar, ficam aqui estas recomendações para que saibas como deves agir na casa de Deus, que é a igreja do Deus vivo, o sustento e apoio da verdade. 16 Com efeito, é uma profunda verdade aquela que a nossa devoção revela:

Cristo veio à Terra como homem,

recebeu o testemunho do Espírito em como era justo,

foi contemplado pelos anjos,

anunciado entre os gentios,

acreditado no mundo,

e recebido na glória.

1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
