1 Joás tinha 7 anos quando começou a reinar. Reinou em Jerusalém 40 anos. A sua mãe era Zibia de Berseba. 2 Joás fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, enquanto viveu o sacerdote Jeoiada. 3 Este arranjou-lhe dois casamentos e teve filhos e filhas.

4 A dada altura, Joás resolveu fazer reparações no templo do Senhor. 5 Convocou os sacerdotes e os levitas e deu-lhes as seguintes instruções: "Vão a todas as cidades de Judá e façam uma coleta de fundos para a reconstrução do templo, para que possamos fazer obras de renovação. Vão imediatamente! Não arrastem esse assunto!" Contudo, os levitas não tiveram pressa em obedecer.

6 O rei mandou chamar Jeoiada, o sumo sacerdote: "Porque é que não exigiste aos levitas que fossem recolher os impostos do templo em todas as cidades de Judá e em Jerusalém? É o imposto ordenado por Moisés, servo do Senhor, que prevê o pagamento de um imposto por parte da congregação de Israel, para a conservação da tenda do testemunho!", lembrou-lhe o rei. "É necessário fazer a recolha desse dinheiro."

7 A ímpia Atalia e os seus filhos tinham arruinado o templo, e muito do equipamento sagrado, destinado ao culto a Deus, tinha sido levado para o culto aos ídolos de Baal.

8 O rei deu instruções para que se fizesse uma caixa e que esta fosse colocada à entrada, do lado de fora do templo do Senhor. 9 Foi enviada uma proclamação a todas as cidades de Judá e a Jerusalém, convidando o povo a trazer ao Senhor o imposto que Moisés, servo de Deus, tinha instituído para Israel, no deserto. 10 Todos os chefes, e também o povo, acolheram muito bem a ideia, e começaram a trazer dinheiro, depositando-o na caixa das ofertas, a qual rapidamente ficou cheia.

11 Os levitas levaram-na à tesouraria real, onde o secretário do rei e o representante do sumo sacerdote contaram o dinheiro na frente do tesoureiro, levando a caixa de novo para o templo. E assim aconteceu dia após dia, acumulando-se uma elevada quantia de dinheiro. 12 O rei e Jeoiada deram este dinheiro aos empreiteiros encarregados das obras de restauro, assim como aos carpinteiros e aos serralheiros designados para fazerem as peças de ferro e bronze.

13 O trabalho foi avançando e o templo acabou por ser restaurado, ficando em muito melhores condições do que anteriormente. 14 Quando tudo ficou pronto, o dinheiro que sobejou foi trazido ao rei e a Jeoiada; foi acordado que o excedente seria aplicado no fabrico de colheres e recipientes em ouro e prata, para uso nas ofertas de incenso, e também no fabrico de utensílios usados nos sacrifícios e nas ofertas de holocaustos que eram continuamente oferecidos durante o tempo de vida do sacerdote Jeoiada.

15 Este faleceu muito idoso, com a idade de 130 anos. 16 Foi enterrado na Cidade de David, junto aos túmulos dos reis, devido ao muito que fez por Israel, por Deus e pelo templo.

17 Contudo, após a morte de Jeoiada, os líderes de Judá foram ter com o rei Joás e prostraram-se diante dele. 18 Convenceram-no a deixar de se preocupar com o templo do Senhor, Deus dos seus antepassados, e a prestar antes culto aos ídolos e às imagens da deusa Achera. Por causa disso, a ira de Deus desceu novamente sobre Judá e sobre Jerusalém. 19 Deus enviou-lhes profetas, para os levar a converterem-se ao Senhor, mas o povo não lhes deu ouvidos.

20 Então o Espírito de Deus veio sobre Zacarias, filho do sacerdote Jeoiada, o qual se apresentou diante do povo e disse-lhes: "Deus pergunta por que razão desobedeceram aos mandamentos do Senhor. A verdade é que tudo aquilo que procuram realizar nunca resulta, porque abandonaram o Senhor; por isso, também ele vos abandonou agora!"

21 Os líderes começaram a conjurar para o matar, até que o próprio rei Joás ordenou que fosse apedrejado no pátio do templo. 22 Foi dessa maneira infeliz, matando-lhe o filho, que o rei Joás assinalou a memória de Jeoiada e todo o amor e lealdade que tinha demonstrado em vida. As últimas palavras de Zacarias, ao morrer, foram: "Que o Senhor veja e lhes dê a paga!"

23 Por volta da primavera, o exército arameu avançou contra Judá e Jerusalém, conquistando a terra, matando todos os líderes da nação e levando para Damasco grandes quantidades de despojos. 24 Tratou-se dum grande triunfo para o exército de Aram, que até tinha poucos homens. Foi o Senhor que permitiu que o grande exército de Judá fosse conquistado, porque tinham abandonado o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados. Foi dessa forma que o Senhor executou a sua sentença sobre Joás. 25 Quando os arameus partiram, deixando Joás gravemente ferido, os próprios oficiais do rei decidiram matá-lo, por ter assassinado o filho do sacerdote Jeoiada. Executaram-no quando estava deitado na sua cama e enterraram-no na Cidade de David, mas não no cemitério dos reis.

26 Aqueles que conspiraram contra ele foram Zabade, cuja mãe se chamava Simeate, mulher amonita, e Jeozabade, cuja mãe era Simrite, uma moabita. 27 Os factos referentes aos filhos de Joás e também as maldições que recaíram sobre ele, assim como a restauração que empreendeu no templo, podem ser lidos no Livro dos Reis. Quando Joás morreu, o seu filho Amazias ascendeu ao trono.

1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba. 2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.

4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.*24.4 to repair: Heb. to renew 5 And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not. 6 And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness? 7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim. 8 And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD. 9 And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.*24.9 a proclamation: Heb. a voice 10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end. 11 Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. 12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD. 13 So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.*24.13 the work…: Heb. the healing went up upon the work 14 And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. 15 But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died. 16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house. 17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them. 18 And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass. 19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. 20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.*24.20 came…: Heb. clothed 21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD. 22 Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son.
