1 No terceiro ano do reinado de Oseias, filho de Elá, rei de Israel, Ezequias, filho de Acaz, tornou-se rei em Judá. 2 Ezequias tinha 25 anos quando se tornou rei de Judá. Reinou 29 anos em Jerusalém. A sua mãe chamava-se Abia e era filha de Zacarias. 3 Ezequias fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, conforme tudo o que fizera David, seu antepassado. 4 Tirou os santuários pagãos nas colinas, derrubou os obeliscos, quebrou os vergonhosos ídolos de Achera, destruiu a serpente de bronze que Moisés fizera, pois até então o povo oferecia-lhe incenso queimado, chamando-lhe Neustan, ainda que o rei Ezequias lhes tivesse dito que não passava de uma simples peça de bronze.

5 Confiou no Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Com efeito, não houve nem antes nem depois dele nenhum rei tão fiel ao Senhor. 6 Manteve-se fiel ao Senhor, sem jamais se afastar dele e obedeceu aos mandamentos dados através de Moisés. 7 Por isso, o Senhor esteve sempre com ele, o ajudou e o fez prosperar em tudo. Rebelou-se contra o rei da Assíria e recusou-se a servi-lo. 8 Conquistou terra aos filisteus, até ao limite de Gaza e seus arredores, destruindo povoações, tanto as maiores como as mais pequenas.

9 Foi durante o quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, que correspondia ao sétimo do reinado de Oseias de Israel, que o rei Salmaneser da Assíria atacou Israel e pôs cerco à cidade de Samaria. 10 Três anos mais tarde, durante o sexto ano do reinado de Ezequias e o nono do rei Oseias de Israel, Samaria cedeu e foi conquistada. 11 O rei da Assíria transportou israelitas para o seu país e organizou colónias para a sua instalação na cidade de Hala e ao longo das margens do rio Habor em Gozã, assim como nas cidades dos medos. 12 Isso aconteceu-lhes porque não quiseram dar ouvidos à palavra do Senhor, seu Deus, de aceitar tudo o que queria que fizessem. Ao contrário, quebraram a aliança estabelecida com Deus e desobedeceram aos mandamentos que Moisés, o servo do Senhor, lhes tinha dado.

13 Mais tarde, no décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, veio combater contra todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e tomou-as. 14 O rei Ezequias pediu a paz e enviou uma mensagem ao rei da Assíria em Laquis: "Errei. Estou pronto a pagar o tributo que exigires, contanto que te retires da terra." O rei assírio pediu então um pagamento de 10 000 quilos de prata e 1000 de ouro. 15 Para juntar todo esse dinheiro, o rei Ezequias serviu-se de prata armazenada no templo e nos cofres do palácio real.

16 Arrancou ainda o ouro que revestia as portas do templo, e o das ombreiras de outras portas que tinham sido revestidas com esse metal precioso, e deu tudo ao rei assírio.

17 Contudo, este último enviou o comandante supremo do seu exército, o tesoureiro real e o mordomo da corte em Laquis, com um grande exército; acamparam junto à estrada principal, ao lado do campo das lavadeiras, perto do aqueduto do reservatório superior. 18 Pediram que o rei Ezequias viesse falar com eles. Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, que era o primeiro-ministro, acompanhado de Sebna, escrivão do rei, e de Joá, filho de Asafe, secretário real, formaram entre si uma comissão que saiu da cidade para se encontrar com o enviado da Assíria.

19 Então o general assírio enviou o seguinte recado ao rei Ezequias:

"O poderoso rei da Assíria diz-te que és um louco ao pensares que o rei do Egito te poderá ajudar. 20 Pensas que a estratégia e a valentia militares são apenas uma questão de palavras? Em quem confias para te revoltares contra mim? 21 No Egito? Se te apoias no Egito, vais verificar que essa nação é como um pau que logo se quebra, quando nos apoiamos nele, e que acaba por nos perfurar a mão. O Faraó egípcio não inspira confiança alguma! 22 Talvez também estejas a dizer: ‘Nós confiamos no Senhor, nosso Deus!’ Então não é esse aquele que o vosso rei insultou, deitando abaixo os seus santuários e os altares sobre as colinas, obrigando toda a gente de Judá a adorar em Jerusalém e a usar unicamente o altar do templo?

23 O meu mestre, o rei da Assíria, propõe-vos o seguinte negócio: se conseguirem arranjar 2000 homens, do que ficou de todo o vosso exército, ele dá-vos outros tantos cavalos para que os montem! 24 Assim, como poderás resistir a um oficial do meu senhor, mesmo que seja um dos menores, quando estás confiante que o Egito te fornecerá carros e cavaleiros? 25 Além disso, julgas que vim aqui de minha própria iniciativa? Não. Foi o Senhor quem me disse: ‘Vai destruir essa nação!’ "

26 Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, Sebna e Joá responderam-lhe: "Pedimos-te que fales em aramaico, porque compreendemos esse idioma. Não uses o hebraico, para que o povo que está sobre as muralhas não perceba."

27 O general assírio retorquiu: "O meu senhor não me mandou apenas para vos falar a vocês, mas também a essa gente que está em cima da muralha. É que eles estão também condenados a ingerirem o seu próprio esterco e a sua urina!"

28 Logo a seguir, o embaixador levantou a voz e falou, em hebraico, ao povo que ali estava: "Ouçam o que vos diz o grande rei da Assíria: 29 ‘Não se deixem enganar por Ezequias; ele não será capaz de vos livrar do meu poder. 30 Não lhe deem ouvidos, quando vos disser para confiarem no Senhor, e que o Senhor não permitirá que sejam conquistados pelo rei da Assíria!’

31 Não ouçam Ezequias! Vejam antes o que o rei da Assíria vos oferece: Primeiro, devem trazer-me um presente em sinal de rendição e aliarem-se a mim. Depois, abram todas as portas da cidade e saiam; deixarei que cada família possua a sua própria casa com a sua videira e a sua figueira. 32 Isso até que eu tenha conseguido organizar a vossa ida para uma terra muito semelhante a esta, uma terra de belas cearas e de vinho, terra de pão e de vinhas, terra de oliveiras e de mel, para que lá vivam e não morram. Não deixem que Ezequias vos defraude, garantindo que o Senhor vos livrará dos meus exércitos. 33 Algum dos deuses das outras nações alguma vez conseguiu livrar o seu povo do rei da Assíria? 34 Que foi que aconteceu com os deuses de Hamate, Arpade, Sefarvaim, Hena e Iva? Foram eles capazes de proteger Samaria? 35 Qual foi o deus que, em alguma ocasião, teve poder para preservar uma nação da minha força? O que vos leva a pensar que o Senhor pode salvar Jerusalém?"

36 O povo permaneceu calado e não lhe respondeu uma só palavra, pois Ezequias tinha-lhes dito para nada retorquirem. 37 Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, administrador do palácio, assim como Sebna, escrivão real, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o cronista da corte, voltaram para junto de Ezequias, com as suas vestes rasgadas, em sinal de profunda tristeza, e contaram-lhe tudo o que o general assírio lhes dissera.

1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.*18.1 Hezekiah: he is called Ezekias 2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. 4 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.*18.4 images: Heb. statues*18.4 Nehushtan: that is, A piece of brass 5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. 6 For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.*18.6 from…: Heb. from after him 7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. 8 He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.*18.8 Gaza: Heb. 9 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. 10 And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11 And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes: 12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.*18.13 Sennacherib: Heb. Sanherib 14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house. 16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.*18.16 it: Heb. them

17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.*18.17 great: Heb. heavy 18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.*18.18 scribe: or, secretary 19 And Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 20 Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?*18.20 sayest: or, talkest*18.20 vain…: Heb. word of the lips*18.20 I have…: or, but counsel and strength are for the war 21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.*18.21 trustest: Heb. trustest thee 22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? 23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.*18.23 pledges: or, hostages 24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 25 Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. 26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall. 27 But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?*18.27 their own piss: Heb. the water of their feet 28 Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria: 29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand: 30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:*18.31 Make…: or, Seek my favour: Heb. Make with me a blessing*18.31 cistern: or, pit 32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.*18.32 persuadeth: or, deceiveth 33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand? 35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand? 36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not. 37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.
