1 Ezequias adoeceu gravemente, ficando às portas da morte. O profeta Isaías veio visitá-lo. "Põe todos os teus assuntos em ordem", disse-lhe Isaías, "e prepara-te para morreres. O Senhor manda dizer-te que não recuperarás a saúde."

2 Ezequias voltou-se para o lado da parede e orou assim ao Senhor: 3 "Ó Senhor, lembra-te de como eu tenho sido honesto e sincero contigo e como procurei obedecer a tudo o que tens dito!" E começou a chorar intensamente.

4 Antes que o profeta tivesse deixado o pátio do palácio, o Senhor tornou a falar-lhe: 5 "Volta para trás e vai ter com Ezequias, o chefe do meu povo; diz-lhe que o Senhor, o Deus do seu antepassado David, ouviu a sua oração e viu as lágrimas que verteu. Curá-lo-ei; daqui a três dias levantar-se-á da cama e estará no templo! 6 Acrescentarei 15 anos à sua vida e salvarei esta cidade do rei da Assíria. Tudo isto será feito para glória do meu próprio nome e por amor do meu servo David."

7 Isaías mandou preparar uma pomada de figos e aplicou-a sobre a chaga do rei. E ele sarou.

8 Entretanto, o rei Ezequias perguntou a Isaías: "Que sinal me dará o Senhor como prova de que me curará e de que estarei em condições de ir ao templo daqui a três dias?"

9 Isaías respondeu: "O Senhor vai dar-te uma prova. O que é que preferes? Que a sombra do relógio de Sol avance 10 graus ou que recue 10 graus?"

10 "A sombra avançar, isso é o seu movimento normal. Faz com que ela recue." 11 Então o profeta Isaías pediu ao Senhor que fizesse isso e, com efeito, a sombra recuou 10 graus no relógio de sol de Acaz!

12 Pouco tempo depois, Merodaque-Baladã, filho do rei Baladã da Babilónia, enviou embaixadores com cartas e um presente a Ezequias, porque tinha ouvido dizer que estivera muito doente. 13 Ezequias apreciou muito este gesto e concedeu-lhes uma audiência, na qual levou os delegados da Babilónia a visitar o seu palácio, mostrando-lhes inclusivamente a casa do tesouro, cheia de peças de prata e de ouro, de especiarias raras e dos melhores perfumes. Levou-os ainda à casa das armas e mostrou-lhes tudo; não lhes escondeu nada; abriu-lhes todas as portas.

14 Então o profeta Isaías foi ter com o rei e disse-lhe: "Donde vieram esses homens? Que foi que te disseram?" Ezequias respondeu: "Vieram de muito longe! Vieram da Babilónia!"

15 "Que foi que eles viram do teu palácio?", perguntou Isaías. "Viram tudo! Mostrei-lhes todos os meus tesouros."

16 "Ouve-me!", disse-lhe Isaías. "Dá atenção à palavra do Senhor: 17 Há de vir a altura em que tudo neste palácio será transportado para a Babilónia. Todos os tesouros dos teus antepassados serão levados; nada ficará aqui. 18 Alguns dos teus filhos até serão feitos escravos. Sim, eunucos do palácio do rei da Babilónia."

19 "Essa é uma boa notícia da parte do Senhor", respondeu Ezequias. É que pensou: "Pelo menos, haverá paz e segurança durante a minha vida!"

20 Os outros acontecimentos da história de Ezequias e os seus feitos, incluindo o poço e a conduta que mandou construir para trazer água à cidade, estão escritos no Livro das Crónicas dos Reis de Judá. 21 Quando faleceu, o seu filho Manassés ascendeu ao trono.

And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

8 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day? 9 And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? 10 And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. 11 And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.*20.11 dial: Heb. degrees

12 At that time Berodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.*20.12 Berodach-baladan: or, Merodach-baladan 13 And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.*20.13 precious things: or, spicery*20.13 armour: or, jewels: Heb. vessels

14 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon. 15 And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them. 16 And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD. 17 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD. 18 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. 19 Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. 20 And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a pool, and a conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 21 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
