1 Absalão comprou um carro ao qual mandou atrelar cavalos e contratou cinquenta homens que corressem diante dele. 2 Levantava-se de manhã cedo e ia para a entrada da cidade. Quando alguém trazia algum caso para submeter ao julgamento do rei, Absalão mandava-o parar e perguntava: "De onde és tu?" Ele respondia: "Sou de tal tribo de Israel, meu senhor!" 3 "Estou a ver que tens razão nesse assunto. Infelizmente o rei não tem ninguém que o assista para ouvir esses casos. 4 Eu bem desejaria ser juiz, para que qualquer pessoa que tivesse uma causa a apresentar pudesse vir ter comigo para lhe fazer justiça!" 5 Se alguém se chegava e lhe fazia uma reverência, ele dava-lhe um abraço de saudação com um beijo. 6 Dessa forma, ia roubando os corações de todo o povo de Israel a seu favor.

7,8 Passados quatro anos Absalão disse ao rei: "Deixa-me ir até Hebrom para fazer um sacríficio ao Senhor em cumprimento de um voto que lhe fiz, quando estava em Gesur, em Aram, que se pudesse regressar a Jerusalém serviria ao Senhor."

9 O rei disse-lhe: "Vai em paz e cumpre o teu voto." O príncipe dirigiu-se a Hebrom. 10 Enquanto ali estava, mandou gente a todas as partes de Israel, incitando a população à revolta contra o rei: "Logo que ouçam as trombetas", dizia a mensagem que enviava, "saberão que Absalão foi coroado rei em Hebrom." 11 Levou consigo duzentos homens de Jerusalém, como hóspedes, que nada sabiam das suas intenções. 12 Enquanto oferecia o sacrifício, mandou buscar Aitofel, um dos conselheiros de David que vivia em Gilo. Aitofel declarou-se a favor de Absalão tal como muitos outros. E assim a conspiração ganhou força.

13 Em breve chegou a Jerusalém um mensageiro que contou ao rei David o que se passava: "Israel em peso está a conspirar contra ti a favor de Absalão!"

14 "Teremos de fugir antes que seja tarde demais!", foi a resposta imediata de David ao homem. "Se sairmos da cidade antes que ele chegue, tanto nós como a própria cidade poderemos ser poupados."

15 "Nós estamos contigo", disseram-lhe os conselheiros. "Faz o que achares melhor." 16 Então o rei e a sua casa saíram logo da cidade. Não deixou ninguém no palácio senão dez das suas mulheres, para manterem a casa em ordem. 17 David parou num dos limites da cidade, 18 para deixar as suas tropas passarem à frente; seiscentos homens de Gate, que dali tinham vindo com ele, mais os cretenses e os peleteus.

19 No entanto, voltando-se para Itai, o capitão dos seiscentos giteus, disse-lhe: "Para que hás de vir connosco? Vai ter com os teus homens a Jerusalém, e com o teu rei, pois és um hóspede em Israel, um estrangeiro no exílio. 20 Parece que foi ontem que aqui chegaste e iria obrigar-te a andar vagueando connosco, sabe-se lá por onde? Volta para trás com as tuas tropas e que o Senhor use de misericórdia e de fidelidade para contigo!"

21 Itai retorquiu: "Tão certo como vive o Senhor e pela tua própria vida, que irei para onde quer que vás, aconteça o que acontecer, quer isso represente a vida ou a morte."

22 David respondeu-lhe: "Está bem, podes vir connosco!" Assim Itai e os seus seiscentos homens prosseguiram com ele.

23 Havia uma tristeza profunda na cidade, enquanto o rei ia passando, com os que o acompanhavam, e enquanto atravessava o ribeiro de Cedron e seguia pelo campo.

24 Abiatar, Zadoque e os levitas levaram a arca da aliança de Deus e colocaram-na no chão, até que toda a gente passou. 25 Depois, de acordo com instruções de David, Zadoque voltou com a arca para a cidade. "Se o Senhor achar bem", disse David, "fará com que regresse para tornar a ver a arca e o santuário. 26 Mas se desejar que a minha carreira acabe, que se faça a sua vontade."

27 O rei disse ainda a Zadoque: "Ouve-me, este é o meu plano: Volta tranquilamente para a cidade com o teu filho Aimaaz e Jónatas, o filho de Abiatar. 28 Dá-me notícias do que se vai passando em Jerusalém, enquanto me refugio no deserto." 29 Zadoque e Abiatar levaram a arca de Deus para a cidade e ali ficaram.

30 David subiu pelo caminho que conduz ao monte das Oliveiras, chorando à medida que caminhava. Ia de cabeça coberta, em sinal de profunda consternação. O povo que o acompanhava ia também de cabeça coberta e chorava, à medida que subiam o monte. 31 Quando alguém veio dizer ao rei que Aitofel, seu conselheiro, se tinha passado para o lado de Absalão, David fez a seguinte oração: "Ó Senhor, faz com que os conselhos de Aitofel sejam transtornados!"

32 Toda a gente chegou finalmente ao cimo do monte das Oliveiras e o povo adorou Deus. David encontrou ali Husai, o arquita, que o esperava com a roupa rasgada e terra sobre a cabeça. 33 O rei disse-lhe: "Se tens a intenção de me seguir, fica a saber que me levantarás problemas. 34 Volta para Jerusalém e diz a Absalão: ‘Estou ao teu serviço, como estive antes ao serviço do teu pai.’ Assim poderás contrapor os conselhos de Aitofel. 35 Zadoque e Abiatar, os sacerdotes, já lá estão. Dá-lhes a conhecer tudo o que ouvires. 36 Eles hão de enviar Aimaaz e Jónatas para vir ter comigo e me dizerem o que se vai passando por lá."

37 Dessa forma, Husai, o amigo de David, voltou para a cidade, na altura em que Absalão também chegava.

1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? 7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron. 8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD. 9 And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.

10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron. 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing. 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. 14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.*15.14 bring: Heb. thrust 15 And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.*15.15 appoint: Heb. choose 16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. 19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile. 20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.*15.20 go up…: Heb. wander in going 21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be. 22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him. 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.*15.23 Kidron: Gr. 24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city. 25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation: 26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him. 27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me. 29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.

30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.*15.30 and wept…: Heb. going up and weeping

31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: 33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me: 34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. 35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear. 37 So Hushai David’s friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
