1 Tu pois, meu filho, fortalece-te na graça que Deus te dá em Cristo Jesus. 2 E o que tens ouvido de mim e que tem sido confirmado por muitas outras testemunhas, transmite-o a pessoas capazes de as comunicar a outros.

3 Aceita as dificuldades como um bom combatente de Jesus Cristo, tal como eu faço. 4 Nenhum militar se deixa prender com problemas que digam respeito aos negócios desta vida, a fim de poder agradar a quem o comanda. 5 Da mesma forma, ninguém que entra numa competição desportiva poderá obter a coroa da vitória, se não tiver respeitado as regras. 6 Também os agricultores se dedicam ao seu trabalho pensando na boa colheita que os recompensará. 7 Considera bem isto e o Senhor te dará entendimento em tudo.

8 Lembra-te de que Jesus Cristo, descendente do rei David, ressuscitou da morte! Este é o tema central da mensagem evangélica que eu prego. 9 E é por isso que tenho sofrido e sido preso, como se fosse um malfeitor. Mas a palavra de Deus, essa não se deixa prender. 10 Eis a razão por que tenho suportado todas estas coisas, por amor daqueles que hão de ouvir a chamada de Deus, para que possam beneficiar da salvação em Cristo Jesus e da eternidade na glória de Deus.

11 Esta é uma verdade segura:

Se morrermos com Cristo,

renasceremos para uma vida nova com ele.

12 Se sofrermos por causa de Cristo,

também depois seremos participantes da sua autoridade na glória.

Mas se o negarmos, ele também nos negará.

13 Se formos infiéis, ele permanecerá sempre fiel,

porque Cristo nunca se negaria a si mesmo!

14 É isto que deves lembrar aos crentes, ordenando-lhes, em nome do Senhor, que não se metam nunca em discussões sobre meras palavras, que de nada servem senão para corromper o entendimento daqueles que ouvem essas disputas. 15 Procura trabalhar de forma a que Deus te aprove, como um trabalhador que de nada tem que se envergonhar, que proclama com exatidão a palavra da verdade. 16 Mas foge desses debates inúteis a que Deus é estranho, e que só fazem é aumentar a descrença. 17 Os pensamentos dessa gente são como gangrena que, à medida que se alastra, vai destruindo. É o caso de Himeneu e de Fileto, 18 que se desviaram da verdade, pondo-se a dizer que a ressurreição já se deu, e assim perverteram a fé de alguns. 19 Mas a verdade de Deus mantém-se firme como uma rocha onde se lê: "O Senhor conhece os que são seus." E ainda: "Quem se chama cristão, afaste-se da injustiça."

20 Nas casas mais abastadas há, a par de peças de ouro e de prata, outras de madeira e de barro. As primeiras são, em geral, empregadas nas ocasiões especiais; as outras são para uso corrente. 21 Portanto, quem se mantiver afastado do mal será como esses objetos de uso especial. Será um elemento santo, digno de ser usado pelo Senhor, apto para toda a boa obra.

22 Foge às paixões próprias da juventude. Segue a justiça, a fé, o amor e a paz, juntamente com aqueles que, com um coração puro, se aproximam do Senhor e se lhe dirigem. 23 Repito, rejeita as questões absurdas, sem profundidade, pois como sabes só levantam contendas. 24 No serviço de Deus, não convém levantar contendas. Deve-se antes ser bondoso para toda a gente, estar prontos a ensinar, ser pacientes nas tribulações. 25 Deve-se procurar esclarecer com brandura os que resistem, para ver se, com a ajuda do Senhor, virão a arrepender-se e a conhecer plenamente a verdade, 26 desprendendo-os assim dos laços com que o Diabo os prende e os sujeita à sua vontade.

1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. 5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. 6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. 7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. 14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
