1 Um dos sete anjos que tinha derramado as pragas sobre a Terra dirigiu-se a mim e disse: "Vem comigo, para que te mostre o que vai acontecer à grande prostituta, que está sentada sobre muitas águas. 2 Os governantes juntaram-se a ela violando a obediência e fidelidade que deviam a Deus e os habitantes da Terra embriagaram-se com o vinho da sua corrupção e imoralidade sexual."

3 O anjo levou-me em espírito a um deserto. E vi uma mulher sentada num monstro vermelho que tinha sete cabeças e dez chifres; e todo ele estava coberto de insultos contra Deus. 4 A roupa que a mulher vestia era de púrpura e vermelha; trazia joias de ouro com pérolas e pedras preciosas. Segurava na mão um cálice de ouro cujo conteúdo, que a enchia completamente, representava todo o tipo de sujidade da sua vida de imoralidade sexual. 5 Na testa tinha uma inscrição cujo real significado ainda não foi revelado:

"A grande Babilónia,

mãe de toda a espécie de prostituição,

a fonte de todo o tipo de sujidade sobre a Terra."

6 Constatei que a mulher estava embriagada; mas era com o sangue dos santos e dos mártires de Jesus. Fiquei cheio de espanto e maravilhado com o que via.

7 Perguntou-me o anjo: "Porque estás assim tão admirado? Eu vou dizer-te o que representa a mulher e o monstro em que ela está sentada, o qual tem sete cabeças e dez chifres. 8 Este monstro era e deixou de ser, e virá do abismo insondável, para ir depois para a destruição eterna. E os habitantes da Terra, cujos nomes não estão inscritos no livro da vida, desde que o mundo foi criado, ficarão admirados por ver que o monstro que era e deixou de ser está a reaparecer.

9 Para interpretar o sentido destas imagens é preciso inteligência e sabedoria: as sete cabeças são sete colinas sobre as quais a mulher se estabeleceu. Mas também representam sete reinos. 10 Cinco deles já foram derrubados, um existe atualmente e o último ainda está para vir, mas o seu reinado deverá ser curto. 11 O próprio monstro vermelho será ele também um oitavo rei que virá na sequência dos outros sete e é um deles, e depois será destruído.

12 Os seus dez chifres são dez reis que ainda não subiram ao poder, mas que recebem a autoridade para reinar com o monstro, embora durante um espaço de tempo muito curto. Aliás, não reinarão a não ser durante um breve momento. 13 E todos esses reis assinarão um tratado com o monstro, entregando-lhe o poder e a autoridade que detêm. 14 Farão juntos guerra ao Cordeiro, que os vencerá, porque é Senhor, dominando todos os senhores, e Rei, acima de todos os reis. Aqueles que lhe são fiéis, que foram chamados e escolhidos por ele, esses participarão da sua vitória."

15 O anjo continuou a explicar-me: "Todos aqueles mares sobre os quais a mulher está sentada representam povos, multidões, nações e línguas. 16 Mas o monstro vermelho e os seus dez chifres, que representam dez reis que reinarão com ele, todos eles têm ódio à mulher. Vão atacá-la, tirar-lhe-ão as roupas que veste, comerão a sua carne e queimá-la-ão no fogo. 17 Porque Deus pôs nas suas mentes a intenção de executarem precisamente o seu plano; e assim concordarão todos em dar o seu poder ao monstro, até que se cumpra a palavra de Deus. 18 A mulher que viste representa a grande cidade que tem sob o seu poder todos os governantes da Terra."

1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. 7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. 10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. 11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. 14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. 15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. 17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. 18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
