1 Quero que saibam como luto muito por vocês, os crentes de Laodiceia, e em geral por todos os que até nem me conhecem pessoalmente. 2 O meu alvo é que estejam consolados, unidos no amor cristão e enriquecidos com uma compreensão perfeita desse tal plano de Deus agora descoberto, que é Cristo; 3 em quem estão como que armazenados todos os tesouros da ciência e da sabedoria.

4 E se digo isto é para que ninguém vos engane com palavras sedutoras. 5 Porque ainda que esteja longe, contudo em espírito estou convosco, alegrando-me por constatar que estão a viver como devem e também pela firmeza da vossa fé em Cristo.

6 Uma vez que receberam Jesus Cristo como vosso Senhor, procurem agora caminhar nele. 7 Que as raízes do vosso ser se implantem em Cristo; que Cristo seja o alicerce sobre o qual a vossa vida é construída com solidez, através da fé nele, fiéis ao que vos foi ensinado e abundando em gratidão a Deus, por tudo o que ele tem feito.

8 Tenham cuidado para que ninguém vos domine por meio de filosofias engenhosas e enganadoras, baseadas em tradições humanas e refletindo os princípios rudimentares deste mundo, mas que não corresponde à doutrina de Cristo.

9 Com efeito, na própria pessoa de Cristo habita corporalmente toda a plenitude da divindade. 10 Portanto, estando em comunhão com Cristo, temos tudo através dele, que é a cabeça de todo o governo e autoridade. 11 É em Cristo que participamos na verdadeira circuncisão que consiste, não num corte físico feito no corpo humano, mas na circuncisão de Cristo, que nos liberta da nossa natureza pecadora. 12 Quando se batizaram, foram como que sepultados com Cristo e, pela fé no poder de Deus que o ressuscitou dos mortos, também renasceram.

13 Estando mortos devido às transgressões e à incircuncisão da vossa natureza pecaminosa, Deus deu-vos uma nova vida juntamente com Cristo, perdoando-vos todos os pecados. 14 O nosso cadastro, que nos servia de acusação, foi como que apagado, com todo o rol das nossas transgressões da Lei de Deus, e foi pregado na cruz. 15 Ali forças e poderes foram despojados e denunciados perante o mundo inteiro. Cristo, por si mesmo, triunfou sobre eles.

16 Portanto ninguém tem o direito de vos julgar quanto ao que comem ou bebem, nem quanto a comemorações de festas religiosas, ou cerimónias de luas novas ou de sábados. 17 Todas essas coisas não são mais do que sombras dos benefícios que estavam por vir; mas o corpo é Cristo. 18 Que ninguém vos domine sob pretexto de um falso culto de anjos e de formas exteriores de humildade, apoiando-se em visões que afinal nunca tiveram; é gente inchada pela sua própria esperteza; 19 mas a verdade é que não estão ligados à cabeça, à qual todos estamos unidos como um corpo estruturado e mantido através dos seus ligamentos, o qual vai crescendo e se desenvolve segundo Deus lhe concede.

20 Se já estão mortos com Cristo, porque vos carregam ainda de princípios rudimentares, mandamentos como se nada tivesse mudado em relação à velha maneira de viver? E continuam a subjugar-vos com regras como: 21 "Não toques nisto, não comas disso, não uses aquilo!" 22 Tudo isso não passa de meros preceitos e doutrinas humanas que perdem a validade com o tempo. 23 Podem ter uma certa aparência de sabedoria, pela devoção, pela falsa humildade e pela severidade para com o corpo, mas não têm qualquer valor no domínio dos instintos carnais.

1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. 5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. 18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not; 22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
