1 No terceiro ano do reinado de Ciro, rei da Pérsia, Daniel, também chamado Beltessazar, teve outra visão. Dizia igualmente respeito a acontecimentos a realizarem-se no futuro, tempos de guerra e angústias, e desta vez ele compreendeu o significado da visão.

2 Quando tive esta visão, eu, Daniel, tinha estado de luto três semanas inteiras. 3 Durante todo esse tempo não bebi vinho nem comi carne, nem qualquer comida saborosa. Também não lavei a cabeça, nem cortei o cabelo.

4 Então, no vigésimo quarto dia do primeiro mês do ano*10.4 Mês de Abibe ou Nisan. Entre a lua nova do mês de março e o mês de abril., estando junto ao grande rio Tigre, 5 reparei numa pessoa junto de mim, vestida de roupa de linho com um cinto de ouro puro de Ufaz à volta da cintura. 6 Tinha a pele brilhante como topázio; saíam-lhe do rosto cintilações e os seus olhos eram como tochas de fogo; os braços e os pés brilhavam também como bronze; quando falava, a voz soava como se se tratasse duma vasta multidão.

7 Só eu, Daniel, vi isto; as pessoas que estavam comigo nada viram. No entanto, sentiram repentinamente um terror inexplicável e foram a correr esconder-se. 8 Apenas eu permaneci ali. Quando vi aquela figura impressionante fiquei sem forças, empalideci e perdi os sentidos.

9 Ele dirigiu-me a palavra, o que fez com que eu caísse com o rosto no chão, desfalecido. 10 Nessa altura, uma mão tocou-me e levantou-me; ainda a tremer fiquei de joelhos. 11 E ouvi: "Daniel, homem muito amado de Deus, ergue-te e ouve atentamente o que tenho a dizer-te, porque foi Deus quem me mandou junto de ti!" Levantei-me, ainda a tremer, e ele continuou:

12 "Não tenhas medo, Daniel, porque as tuas orações são atendidas nos céus e a resposta foi dada logo no primeiro dia em que começaste a jejuar perante o Senhor e a pedir-lhe esclarecimento; nesse mesmo dia fui mandado vir ter contigo. 13 Mas durante vinte e um dias o príncipe que governa o reino da Pérsia opôs-me resistência. Então Miguel, um dos chefes do exército celestial, veio apoiar-me e consegui vencer os reis da Pérsia. 14 Agora, aqui estou para te dizer o que há de acontecer ao teu povo no futuro, porque o cumprimento desta profecia será daqui a muito tempo."

15 Todo esse tempo, mantive-me de olhos baixos, incapaz de proferir uma palavra. 16 Depois, alguém que me pareceu um homem, tocou-me nos lábios e pude dizer ao mensageiro do céu: "Senhor, estou extremamente perturbado com esta aparição e estou sem forças! 17 Como é que uma pessoa como eu pode falar contigo? Estou desfalecido e até respiro com dificuldade!"

18 Então, aquele que me pareceu ser um homem, tocou-me outra vez e senti as forças voltarem-me novamente. 19 "Deus ama-te muito!", disse ele. "Não tenhas receio! Acalma-te e anima-te! Sim, anima-te!"

Enquanto me dizia isto, senti-me mais forte e respondi-lhe: "Podes falar, senhor, porque me fortaleceste!"

20 "Sabes a razão por que vim? Quando regressar, enfrentarei de novo o príncipe da Pérsia e depois dele o príncipe da Grécia. 21 Mas estou aqui para te dizer o que está registado na escritura da verdade. Só Miguel, o príncipe de Israel, estará ali para me ajudar.

1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.*10.1 long: Heb. great 2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.*10.2 full…: Heb. weeks of days 3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.*10.3 pleasant…: Heb. bread of desires 4 And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; 5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz:*10.5 a…: Heb. one man 6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. 7 And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. 8 Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.*10.8 comeliness: or, vigour 9 Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.

10 And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands.*10.10 set: Heb. moved 11 And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.*10.11 greatly…: Heb. of desires*10.11 upright: Heb. upon thy standing 12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.*10.13 chief: or, first 14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days. 15 And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. 16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. 17 For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.*10.17 the…: or, this servant of my lord 18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, 19 And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me. 20 Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. 21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.*10.21 holdeth: Heb. strengtheneth himself
