1 Se obedecerem inteiramente a estes mandamentos do Senhor, vosso Deus, a todas estas leis que vos estou a declarar hoje, o Senhor, vosso Deus, fará de vocês a maior nação da Terra. 2 E são estas as bênçãos que virão sobre vocês:

3 Serão abençoados nas povoações, serão abençoados nos campos.

4 Terão muitos filhos, serão abundantes as vossas colheitas, terão grandes rebanhos e manadas.

5 Será abençoado o teu cesto e a tua masseira de farinha.

6 Serão abençoados quando chegarem a um sítio e quando partirem para outro local.

7 O Senhor derrotará os vossos inimigos na vossa presença; marcharão juntos contra vocês, mas depois fugirão e se dispersarão em sete direções. 8 O Senhor vos abençoará com boas colheitas e com gado saudável, fazendo prosperar tudo quanto fizerem ao chegar à terra que o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos dá. 9 Fará de vocês um povo santo que lhe seja consagrado. Isto é o que o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos promete se lhe obedecerem e andarem nos seus caminhos. 10 Todas as nações do mundo constatarão que pertencem ao Senhor e sentirão respeito por vocês.

11 O Senhor dar-vos-á abundância de boas coisas na terra como prometeu aos vossos antepassados: muitos filhos, muito gado e ricas colheitas. 12 Abrirá para os seus tesouros maravilhosos de chuvas dos céus, para vos dar belas colheitas em todas as épocas. Abençoará tudo quanto fizerem e poderão ceder empréstimos a muitas outras nações estrangeiras, sem terem de pedir emprestado a outros. 13 Se obedecerem aos mandamentos do Senhor, vosso Deus, que hoje vos dou, o Senhor vos porá à cabeça e não na cauda; terão sempre a supremacia. 14 No entanto, cada uma destas bênçãos depende de não se desviarem nem para um lado nem para o outro das leis que hoje vos dou e de nunca adorarem outros deuses.

15 Contudo, se não quiserem ouvir o Senhor, vosso Deus, nem obedecer a estas leis que hoje vos estou a dar, então todas estas maldições cairão sobre vocês.

16 Serão malditos nas povoações, serão malditos nos campos.

17 Será maldito o teu cesto e a tua masseira de farinha.

18 Serão amaldiçoados com madres estéreis, as vossas searas serão malditas, também o vosso gado e os vossos rebanhos serão malditos.

19 Serão amaldiçoados quando chegarem a qualquer sítio ou quando partirem.

20 Será o próprio Senhor que vos amaldiçoará. Andarão em confusão e tudo o que empreenderem falhará. Até que por fim serão destruídos por causa de se terem esquecido dele. 21 Mandar-vos-á a doença até que sejam destruídos da face da terra de que vão tomar posse agora. 22 Mandar-vos-á a tuberculose, febre, infeções, pragas e guerra. Queimará as vossas searas, cobrindo-as de míldio. Todas estas devastações vos perseguirão até que todos pereçam. 23 Os céus por cima parecerão de bronze e a terra debaixo de vocês será como o ferro. 24 A terra ficará seca como o pó, por falta de água, e até as tempestades de pó vos destruirão.

25 O Senhor fará com que sejam destruídos pelos vossos inimigos. Avançarão para a batalha, mas acabarão por fugir perante os inimigos no meio da maior confusão; serão sacudidos dum lado para o outro entre as nações da Terra. 26 Os vossos corpos mortos servirão de alimento às aves de rapina e aos animais selvagens, e não haverá ninguém para os afugentar.

27 O Senhor vos ferirá com úlceras do Egito, com tumores, com escorbuto e com sarna. E para nenhum desses males haverá remédio. 28 Mandar-vos-á loucura, cegueira, terrores e pânico. 29 Em pleno dia andarão às apalpadelas como um cego em plena escuridão. Não prosperarão em nada do que fizerem. Serão continuamente oprimidos e explorados; nada vos salvará.

30 Será um outro indivíduo que virá a casar com a mulher de quem estavam noivos; outra pessoa virá a morar na casa que construíram; outros comerão o fruto das vinhas que plantaram. 31 Os vossos bois serão abatidos contra a vossa vontade, à vossa frente, sem que venham a comer a sua carne. Roubar-vos-ão os jumentos na vossa presença e nunca mais os verão. As vossas ovelhas serão dadas aos vossos inimigos; ninguém quererá dar-vos proteção. 32 Sob os vossos olhos serão os vossos filhos e filhas levados como escravos. O vosso coração ficará despedaçado pela saudade sem conseguirem ir socorrê-los. 33 Uma nação estrangeira, da qual nunca antes tinham ouvido falar, comerá as searas que vos custaram tanto a fazer crescer. Serão sempre oprimidos e esmagados. 34 Ficarão loucos por causa da tragédia que verão à vossa volta. 35 O Senhor vos cobrirá os joelhos e pernas com chagas incuráveis. Realmente, vocês ficarão cobertos da cabeça aos pés.

36 Vocês e o vosso rei serão levados para uma terra que nem vocês nem os vossos antepassados conheceram e durante o exílio chegarão a adorar deuses feitos de madeira e de pedra. 37 Tornar-se-ão objeto de horror, um provérbio, uma fábula entre todas as nações, pois o Senhor vos espalhará.

38 Semearão muito, mas colherão quase nada, visto que os gafanhotos comerão as vossas colheitas. 39 Plantarão vinhas, tratarão delas, mas não chegarão a comer das suas uvas nem a beber do seu vinho, porque serão destruídas por vermes. 40 Plantarão oliveiras por toda a parte, mas não haverá azeite bastante sequer para se ungirem! Porque as árvores perderão as azeitonas antes de estarem maduras. 41 Os vossos filhos e filhas serão levados para serem escravos. 42 Os gafanhotos destruirão as vossas árvores e as vossas vinhas.

43 Os estrangeiros no vosso meio tornar-se-ão cada vez mais ricos, enquanto vocês serão cada vez mais pobres. 44 Serão eles quem vos emprestará aquilo de que precisam e não vocês a eles. Eles estarão à cabeça e vocês na cauda.

45 Todas estas maldições vos seguirão e vos alcançarão, até que sejam destruídos, por terem recusado ouvir o Senhor, vosso Deus, e não terem obedecido aos mandamentos e às leis que vos deu. 46 Estes horrores cairão sobre vocês e os vossos descendentes como um sinal. 47 Tornar-se-ão escravos dos vossos inimigos, por não terem servido com alegria e satisfação o Senhor, vosso Deus, por tudo o que vos deu. 48 O Senhor mandará os vossos inimigos contra vós; terão fome, sede, frio e necessidades em todos os domínios. Um jugo de ferro será posto no vosso pescoço, até que sejam destruídos.

49 O Senhor trará uma nação distante que vos cairá em cima como uma águia; uma nação cuja língua não compreenderão; 50 gente feroz que não terá compaixão nem de velhos nem de novos. 51 Comerão tudo o que é vosso, em casa e nos campos; levarão todo o gado e as colheitas; desaparecerão com os cereias, o vinho novo, o azeite, as crias das vacas e das ovelhas. 52 Essa nação sitiará as vossas cidades e derrubará as muralhas, por mais altas que sejam e por muito que pensem que vos protejem. 53 Chegarão a comer a carne dos vossos próprios filhos e filhas nesses dias terríveis, que hão de vir, em que estarão cercados.

54 Até o mais sensível e delicado se tornará endurecido e mau para com o seu próprio irmão, a sua querida mulher e os filhos que ainda lhe restarem com vida. 55 Recusará mesmo deixá-los partilhar da carne que possa estar a devorar, a carne dos seus próprios filhos, porque sente que morre de fome no meio daquele cerco à cidade. 56 A mulher mais terna e mais branda, aquela que quase nem assenta os pés no chão, recusará repartir com o seu querido marido, filhos e filhas o que tem para comer. 57 Esconderá deles, quando tiver dado à luz, a placenta e a criança que lhe nasceu, para que possa comê-los ela própria; tão terrível será a fome durante esse ataque, e tão terrível a depressão causada pela presença dos inimigos às vossas portas.

58 Se recusarem obedecer a todos os mandamentos desta Lei escritos neste livro, negando-se a temer o nome tremendo e glorioso do Senhor, o vosso Deus, 59 então o Senhor vos enviará chagas perpétuas, a vocês e aos vossos filhos. 60 Mandará todas as doenças e males do Egito que vocês receiam tanto; toda a terra será flagelada dessa maneira. 61 E não será tudo! O Senhor trará sobre vocês toda a espécie de doenças e de pragas que existem, mesmo as que não são mencionadas neste livro da Lei, até que sejam destruídos. 62 Serão poucos os que ficarão vivos depois disto, ainda que tenham sido tão numerosos como as estrelas do firmamento. É o que vos acontecerá se não quiserem ouvir o Senhor, vosso Deus.

63 Da mesma forma que o Senhor se alegrou convosco e fez coisas tão maravilhosas, tendo-vos multiplicado, assim também nesse tempo ele sentir-se-á satisfeito em destruir-vos. E vocês desaparecerão da terra. 64 Porque o Senhor vos espalhará entre as nações, duma extremidade à outra da Terra. Lá adorarão os deuses desses povos pagãos, que nem vocês nem os vossos antepassados conheceram, deuses feitos de madeira e de pedra. 65 Lá entre essas nações não encontrarão repouso; antes vos dará o Senhor constante desassossego interior, escuridão e corpos esgotados pela tristeza e pelo cansaço. As vossas vidas andarão sempre como que suspensas pela dúvida. 66 Viverão noite e dia em temores e nunca chegarão a ter a certeza de poder ver a luz da manhã. 67 Ao amanhecer dirão: "Quem dera que já fosse noite!" E ao cair da noite: "Que venha depressa a manhã!" Isto dirão por causa dos terríveis horrores que vos rodeiam. 68 Então o Senhor vos mandará de novo para o Egito em navios, viagem que vos tinha prometido que nunca mais haveriam de fazer. Lá vender-se-ão aos vossos próprios inimigos como escravos e ninguém quererá comprar-vos.

15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: 16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. 17 Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store. 18 Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. 19 Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. 20 The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.*28.20 for…: Heb. which thou wouldest do 21 The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it. 22 The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.*28.22 sword: or, drought 23 And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. 24 The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed. 25 The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.*28.25 removed: Heb. for a removing 26 And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away. 27 The LORD will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. 28 The LORD shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart: 29 And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee. 30 Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.*28.30 gather…: Heb. profane, or, use it as common meat 31 Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them.*28.31 shall not…: Heb. shall not return to thee 32 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand. 33 The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway: 34 So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 35 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head. 36 The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone. 37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee. 38 Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it. 39 Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. 40 Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall cast his fruit. 41 Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity.*28.41 thou shalt not…: Heb. they shall not be thine 42 All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume.*28.42 consume: or, possess 43 The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low. 44 He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee: 46 And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. 47 Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. 49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;*28.49 understand: Heb. hear 50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:*28.50 of fierce…: Heb. strong of face 51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee. 52 And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. 53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee:*28.53 body: Heb. belly 54 So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave: 55 So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. 56 The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter, 57 And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.*28.57 young one: Heb. afterbirth 58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; 59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. 60 Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee. 61 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.*28.61 bring: Heb. cause to ascend 62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God. 63 And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. 64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. 65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: 66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: 67 In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 68 And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
