1 O Senhor, vosso Deus, disse-me para vos dar todos estes estatutos que devem cumprir na terra onde em breve vão entrar e onde vão passar a viver. 2 A finalidade desses preceitos é levar-vos, a vocês, aos vossos filhos e aos vossos descendentes a temer ao Senhor, vosso Deus, através da obediência às suas instruções todo o tempo que viverem. Se o fizerem, terão uma vida longa e muitos anos de prosperidade pela frente. 3 Portanto, ó Israel, atenta cuidadosamente para cada um desses mandamentos e procura cumpri-los rigorosamente, para que tudo te vá bem e para que te multipliques como nação. Se obedecerem a estes regulamentos tornar-se-ão numa grande nação nessa terra onde jorra leite e mel, tal como vos prometeu o Senhor, Deus de vossos pais.

4 Ouve, Israel: só o Senhor e apenas ele é o nosso Deus. 5 Ama o Senhor, teu Deus, com todo o teu coração, com toda a tua alma e com toda a tua força. 6 Estas palavras que hoje vos dou deverão estar constantemente gravadas nas vossas mentes. 7 Ensinem-nas aos vossos filhos; falem nelas quando estiverem em casa, fora ou caminhando. Que seja a última coisa que fazem ao deitar e a primeira ao levantar no dia seguinte. 8 Que elas vos acompanhem como um sinal que atam a um dedo, como uma marca que esteja inscrita nas vossas testas. 9 Que os vossos lares sejam conhecidos por terem essas leis escritas à entrada.

10 Quando o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos tiver trazido para a terra que prometeu aos vossos antepassados Abraão, Isaque e Jacob, e quando vos tiver dado grandes cidades, plenas de boas coisas, cidades que não foram vocês a construir, 11 casas cheias de tudo o que é bom, sem teres sido tu a enchê-las, com poços que também não foram vocês a abrir e com vinhas e olivais que igualmente não plantaram, e começarem a comer dos seus frutos até estarem satisfeitos, 12 nessa altura tenham muito cuidado em não se esquecerem do Senhor que vos tirou do Egito, dessa terra de escravidão.

13 Não se esqueçam de continuar a temer o Senhor, vosso Deus, de continuar a servi-lo, de usar o seu nome só como garantia dos vossos votos. 14 Não adorem os deuses das nações vizinhas, 15 porque o Senhor, o vosso Deus, que vive no vosso meio, é um Deus cioso e a sua ira pode acender-se rapidamente contra vocês e fazer-vos desaparecer sobre a face da terra. 16 Por isso, não devem provocar o Senhor, vosso Deus, que foi o que aconteceu quando protestaram contra ele em Massá. 17 Esforcem-se por cumprir os mandamentos do Senhor, vosso Deus, as suas instruções e as leis, que ele vos deu. 18 Só então poderão ter a certeza de estar a fazer o que é justo e o que é bom aos olhos do Senhor. Se lhe obedecerem, tudo vos correrá bem e poderão tomar posse da boa terra que o Senhor prometeu aos vossos antepassados. 19 Terão também força para expulsar deste território todos os adversários, visto que o Senhor colaborará convosco.

20 Nos tempos vindouros, quando os vossos filhos vos perguntarem: "Para que servem todas estas leis, mandamentos e preceitos que o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos deu?", 21 deverão responder-lhes: "Nós fomos escravos do Faraó no Egito e o Senhor nos tirou de lá pelo seu grande poder, 22 e com tremendos milagres, golpes terríveis para o Egito e para o Faraó, e toda a sua casa. Vimos tudo isso com os nossos próprios olhos. 23 Tirou-nos dali para conduzir-nos e dar-nos esta terra que tinha prometido aos nossos antepassados. 24 E mandou-nos obedecer a todas estas leis para temermos ao Senhor, nosso Deus, para poder preservar-nos com vida, como tem acontecido até agora. 25 Seremos justificados ao obedecermos a todos os preceitos do Senhor, nosso Deus, conforme ele nos ordenou."

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:*6.1 go: Heb. pass over 2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.*6.7 teach: Heb. whet, or, sharpen 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. 10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, 11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; 12 Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.*6.12 bondage: Heb. bondmen or, servants 13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. 14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; 15 (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

16 Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. 18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, 19 To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken. 20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?*6.20 in…: Heb. to morrow 21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: 22 And the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:*6.22 sore: Heb. evil 23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. 24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. 25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
