1 Quando entrares na casa de Deus, fá-lo numa atitude de reflexão! Entra com a intenção de escutar e não de oferecer sacrifícios, como fazem os insensatos, que nem sequer compreendem que fazem mal. 2 Não fales precipitadamente, nem faças promessas irrefletidas a Deus, pois ele está nos céus e tu aqui na Terra; mede bem o que dizes.

3 Assim como os muitos sonhos nascem da muita atividade, assim também, quanto mais se fala, mais riscos se correm de se proferirem disparates.

4 Por isso, quando fizeres uma promessa a Deus, cumpre-a sem tardar; Deus não gosta de gente inconsequente, cumpre aquilo que prometeste. 5 Vale muito mais não prometer coisa nenhuma do que prometer e depois não cumprir. 6 Neste caso, a tua boca fez-te pecar. Não tentes defender-te, dizendo ao mensageiro de Deus que se tratou de um engano. Isso suscitaria a cólera de Deus, o qual acabaria com a tua prosperidade.

7 Andar na vida a sonhar, em vez de realizar atos concretos, é tão inútil como proferir muitas palavras sem sentido. Por isso, tem cuidado em temer a Deus.

8 Se vires algum pobre oprimido pelo rico e a violência a substituir a justiça, em qualquer ponto da terra, não te surpreendas! Porque cada funcionário está sob as ordens de um outro, que lhe é superior, e o chefe de todos eles tem ainda alguém que lhe está acima. 9 Todos devem usufruir do que a terra produz; até o mais alto magistrado se serve dela.

10 Aquele que ama o dinheiro, nunca tem o bastante. É uma loucura pensar que a riqueza traz felicidade!

11 Quanto mais tiveres, mais gastarás, até ao limite dos teus recursos. Por isso, de que serve ser-se rico? Apenas para ver o dinheiro fugir por entre os dedos!

12 O trabalhador dorme bem, quer tenha pouco ou muito para comer, mas o rico, por causa dos muitos cuidados que lhe traz a fortuna, sofre de insónias.

13 Há outra situação dramática, que verifiquei por toda a parte, a de alguém que põe dinheiro de lado, mas para seu próprio prejuízo. 14 Se investir e perder capital num mau negócio, nada terá para deixar ao filho. 15 Deixará a Terra, como quando chegou, sem nada possuir. 16 Isto é igualmente um problema sério, porque todo o seu trabalho de nada lhe serviu; andou a trabalhar para o vento. 17 O resto da sua vida será obscurecida por numerosos cuidados, sofrimentos e irritações.

18 No entanto, vi uma coisa boa, uma pessoa a comer e a beber, a aproveitar os resultados do seu trabalho, durante o tempo de vida que Deus lhe deu. Essa é a porção que lhe cabe. 19 Na verdade, é muito bom, se uma pessoa tiver recebido de Deus riqueza e saúde e puder desfrutar delas. Gozar do seu trabalho e aceitar a parte que lhe toca na vida é, na verdade, um dom de Deus. 20 A pessoa que fizer isso não necessitará de olhar para trás, com tristeza, porque Deus lhe enche o coração de felicidade.
