1 Quando os inimigos de Judá e de Benjamim tomaram conhecimento de que os exilados tinham regressado e estavam a reconstruir o templo do Senhor, o Deus de Israel, 2 vieram ter com Zorobabel e com os outros chefes, sugerindo-lhes o seguinte: "Deixem-nos trabalhar convosco, porque também buscaremos o vosso Deus como vocês; temos-lhe oferecido sacríficios desde que Esar-Hadom, rei da Assíria, nos trouxe para aqui."

3 Zorobabel, Josué e os outros líderes judeus replicaram-lhes: "Vocês não podem participar connosco nesta obra; o templo do Senhor, Deus de Israel, terá de ser construído pelos próprios israelitas, tal como mandou o rei Ciro."

4 Contudo, o povo que residia na terra tentava desencorajá-los e aterrorizá-los. 5 Enviaram, ao mesmo tempo, agentes ao rei Ciro, para lhe contar mentiras a seu respeito. Esta situação manteve-se durante o resto do reinado de Ciro, até que o rei Dario subiu ao trono.

6 Posteriormente, quando o rei Assuero começou a reinar, escreveram-lhe uma carta de acusação contra o povo de Judá e de Jerusalém. 7 Fizeram o mesmo durante o reinado de Artaxerxes; Bislão, Mitredate, Tabeel e seus companheiros escreveram-lhe uma carta em aramaico, que foi traduzida para que o rei a compreendesse. 8,9 Outros que participaram nesta ação acusatória, junto do rei Artaxerxes, foram o governador Reum, Simsai, secretário de administração, vários juízes, chefes locais, homens persas, indivíduos da Babilónia, de Ereque e os elamitas de Susã. 10 Tinham sido trazidos das suas terras pelo grande e afamado Osnapar e instalados em Jerusalém, Samaria e noutras terras a ocidente do Eufrates.

11 É este o texto da referida carta.

Majestade,

Saudações te enviam os teus leais súbditos a ocidente do rio Eufrates.

12 Permite-nos informar-te que os judeus, enviados da Babilónia para Jerusalém, estão a reconstruir esta cidade rebelde e malvada; já reconstruíram as muralhas e refizeram os alicerces do templo.

13 Por isso, pretendemos que fiques a saber que se esta cidade for reconstruída, não será para teu benefício, pois os judeus não pagarão impostos nem as taxas devidas. 14 Somos súbditos reconhecidos da administração real, por isso não vemos com bons olhos a desonra do rei, e resolvemos avisar-te. 15 Sugerimos que mandes investigar as antigas crónicas, para verificar o quanto esta cidade foi contenciosa no passado; foi mesmo destruída por causa da sua longa história de sedição contra os reis e as nações que procuravam controlá-la. 16 Queremos informar-te que, se esta cidade for reconstruída e as suas muralhas fechadas, o melhor será esqueceres-te do teu império para cá do Eufrates, pois perdê-lo-ás.

17 O rei mandou esta resposta.

Ao governador Reum e ao secretário Simsai, assim como aos seus companheiros que vivem na Samaria e em toda a área a ocidente do Eufrates.

18 A carta que me enviaram foi traduzida e lida perante mim. 19 Ordenei uma pesquisa às crónicas antigas e verifiquei, na verdade, que Jerusalém foi nos tempos passados um foco de insurreição contra muitos reis; com efeito, a sedição e a rebelião eram coisa habitual ali. 20 Houve, no entanto, reis notáveis em Jerusalém que chegaram a ter domínio sobre toda a terra para além do Eufrates, recebendo avultados tributos, cobrando direitos e rendas. 21 Dados os factos, ordeno que essa gente pare o trabalho, a fim de que essa cidade não venha a ser reconstruída até que eu autorize. 22 Que a minha ordem seja cumprida estritamente, pois não posso permitir que haja prejuízo contra os interesses do rei.

23 Quando esta carta chegou às mãos de Reum e de Simsai, foram a correr a Jerusalém e forçaram os judeus a parar as obras.

24 Dessa maneira, os trabalhos foram suspensos até ao segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.
