1 Portanto, como filhos amados por Deus, imitem-no. 2 Andem no amor de Deus, esse amor com que Cristo nos amou e pelo qual se entregou em vosso lugar, num sacrifício cujo perfume subiu agradavelmente até à presença de Deus.

3 Que ninguém tenha de vos acusar seja de imoralidade sexual, de impureza ou ganância; que nem sequer essas coisas se tornem assunto de conversa no vosso meio, como é próprio de santos que vocês são. 4 O mesmo em relação a historietas picantes, anedotas de sentido equívoco e troca de parvoíces: nada disso convém a crentes. Pelo contrário, possam sempre expressar a vossa gratidão em relação ao Senhor. 5 Sabem bem que nunca terá parte no reino de Cristo e de Deus alguém que viva na imoralidade sexual ou na impureza, ou que seja dominado pela avareza, que é uma forma de idolatria. 6 Não se deixem enganar com argumentos habilidosos; é por coisas como essas que a justiça de Deus se exerce severamente sobre todos os que lhe desobedecem. 7 Portanto, com tais pessoas evitem associar-se.

8 Se é verdade que antes eram trevas, agora, contudo, são luz do Senhor. Andem então como filhos da luz! 9 E a vossa vida produzirá frutos espirituais consistindo em bondade, justiça e verdade. 10 Vivam de forma agradável ao Senhor. 11 Não participem em nada que diga respeito às coisas corruptas das trevas; antes pelo contrário, devem denunciá-las. 12 Porque o que nesse domínio se faz, sem que se saiba, até o dizê-lo se torna indecente. 13 Mas tudo isso, quando é trazido para a luz e denunciado publicamente, mostra o verdadeiro carácter. 14 Porque a luz revela a real natureza de todas as coisas. Por isso, se diz:

"Desperta, tu que dormes,

e levanta-te do meio dos que estão como mortos;

e Cristo te iluminará."

15 Cuidado pois como é que se conduzem: não como gente insensata, antes como pessoas espiritualmente esclarecidas, 16 num mundo que é dominado pelas forças do mal; por isso, devem aproveitar melhor o tempo. 17 Fujam, portanto, de uma conduta irresponsável; procurem compreender a vontade do Senhor. 18 O excesso de bebidas alcoólicas produz a embriaguez e conduz à ruína. Pelo contrário, encham-se do Espírito Santo. 19 Que a vossa devoção se exprima através de salmos, hinos e cânticos espirituais, pelos quais louvem o Senhor com o coração. 20 E sempre, por todas as coisas, deem graças a Deus, o Pai, em nome do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.

21 Respeitem-se uns aos outros, porque assim estarão a respeitar Cristo. 22 Da mesma forma, também vocês, esposas, devem sujeitar-se aos vossos maridos, como fazem em relação ao Senhor. 23 Porque o marido é responsável pela sua mulher, tal como Cristo é a cabeça da igreja, ao mesmo tempo que também é o seu Salvador. 24 Assim como a igreja se sujeita voluntariamente a Cristo, assim devem as mulheres sujeitar-se em tudo aos seus maridos.

25 E vocês, maridos, amem as vossas mulheres da mesma forma que Cristo amou a igreja e deu a sua vida por ela, 26 para a tornar santa e pura, pela ação da sua palavra que, como água, a lava, 27 a fim de poder trazê-la para junto de si, sem uma nódoa, sem uma ruga, sem qualquer defeito, mas irrepreensível, santa, gloriosa. 28 É assim que os maridos devem amar as suas esposas, como uma parte do seu próprio corpo, como a si próprios. 29 Ninguém despreza o seu próprio corpo, antes o alimenta e cuida dele. E é isso que Cristo faz com a igreja, o seu corpo, 30 de que fazemos parte integrante. 31 Por isso, as próprias Escrituras afirmam: "O homem deve deixar o pai e a sua mãe, para se unir com a sua mulher, e serão os dois como um só."*5.31 Gn 2.24.32 Sem dúvida, há aqui algo de muito profundo com referência à relação entre Cristo e a igreja. 33 Ora, torno a dizer: o marido deve amar a sua mulher como a si mesmo e a esposa deve respeitar o marido.

1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
