1 Homem mortal profetiza contra as montanhas de Israel. Diz-lhes assim: Ouçam esta mensagem do Senhor! 2 Assim diz o Senhor Deus: Os vossos inimigos escarneceram e reclamaram as vossas antigas elevações como se lhes pertencessem. 3 Devoraram-vos por todos os lados e mandaram-vos como escravos para muitos países. Troçaram de vocês e infamaram-vos, diz o Senhor Deus. 4 Por isso, ó montes de Israel, ouçam a palavra do Senhor Deus, o que ele diz às colinas e às montanhas, às torrentes e aos vales, às propriedades destruídas e às cidades assoladas e devastadas, escarnecidas por gente de nações pagãs de todo o lado. 5 A minha indignação está acendida contra estas nações, especialmente contra Edom, por se terem apropriado da minha terra jubilosamente, com todo o desprezo por mim, e por a terem tornado alvo de rapina, diz o Senhor Deus. 6 Por isso, profetiza e diz às colinas e aos montes, às torrentes e aos vales de Israel: Diz o Senhor Deus, no meu zelo estou cheio de ira, por terem passado tanta vergonha perante as nações vizinhas. 7 Por isso, jurei com a minha mão levantada que chegou a altura dessas nações serem elas mesmas cobertas de vergonha, diz o Senhor Deus.

8 Quanto a vocês, montes de Israel, irão voltar a viver tempos felizes. Hão de ter abundantes colheitas à espera, quando regressarem, o que em breve há de acontecer! 9 Vejam bem, eu estou do vosso lado! Hei de vir ajudar-vos, quando estiverem a preparar a terra e a semear. 10 Aumentarei sensivelmente a vossa população em toda a terra de Israel; as cidades arruinadas serão reconstruídas e ficarão cheias de gente. 11 Não será apenas a população a crescer em número; os rebanhos e as manadas também se multiplicarão. As montanhas de Israel hão de ficar de novo cheias de casas de habitação e farei por vocês ainda mais do que fiz anteriormente. E ficarão a saber que eu sou o Senhor. 12 O meu povo percorrerá novamente toda a terra, porque se tornou outra vez a sua possessão; essa terra será sua herança, de novo, e nunca mais deixarão que os seus filhos morram de fome!

13 Diz o Senhor Deus: Na verdade, as outras nações insultaram-vos dizendo: ‘Israel é uma terra que devora os seus filhos!’ 14 Mas nunca mais tornarão a dizer isto. Hão de crescer as percentagens de natalidade e as taxas de mortalidade infantil diminuirão drasticamente, diz o Senhor Deus. 15 Esses outros povos pagãos nunca mais hão de rir de vocês, porque vocês nunca mais farão tropeçar a vossa nação, diz o Senhor Deus."

16 Veio a mim mais esta palavra de Deus. 17 "Homem mortal, quando o povo de Israel vivia na sua própria terra, sujou-a com os seus atos malvados; o culto que me prestava era tão sujo, tão impuro como uma mulher na menstruação. 18 Poluíram a terra com assassínios e com idolatria. Por isso, derramei sobre eles o meu furor. 19 Mandei-os exilados para muitas terras. Dessa maneira, castiguei-os por todo o mal que deixaram entrar nas suas vidas. 20 Mas quando se espalharam entre as nações, tornaram-se num meio de profanação do meu santo nome, porque dizem, ao vê-los: ‘Cá está esse tal povo cujo Deus não foi capaz de proteger, quando se encontrava em aperto!’ 21 Por isso, estou preocupado com o facto que meu povo arruinou a minha reputação por esse mundo fora.

22 Portanto, dirige-te ao povo de Israel. Diz o Senhor Deus: Voltarei a trazer-vos de volta, mas não porque o tenham merecido. Faço isso para preservar o prestígio do meu santo nome que vocês profanaram entre as nações. 23 Darei honra ao meu grande nome, que vocês mancharam, e todos os povos do mundo saberão que eu sou o Senhor. Serei exaltado perante eles pelo facto de vos ter trazido do exílio, diz o Senhor Deus.

24 Sim, vou trazer-vos de novo para a vossa terra de Israel! 25 Será como se vos tivesse aspergido com água pura. Ficarão limpos. A vossa imundícia e a vossa idolatria desaparecerá. 26 Dar-vos-ei um novo coração e porei em vocês um novo espírito. Tirarei o vosso coração de pedra, de pecado, e porei no seu lugar um coração sensível. 27 Porei em vocês o meu Espírito, de tal forma que obedecerão às minhas leis e farão tudo o que vos mandar. 28 Viverão em Israel, a terra que dei aos vossos antepassados há muito tempo. Vocês serão o meu povo e eu serei o vosso Deus. 29 Purificar-vos-ei dos vossos pecados. Eliminarei da vossa terra os maus anos de colheita de trigo e a fome. 30 Multiplicarei as vossas searas, o fruto dos vossos pomares e dos vossos campos; nunca mais os povos vizinhos terão ocasião de zombar de vocês, por causa das fomes que vos assolaram. 31 Hão de então lembrar-se dos vossos pecados do passado e chegarão a ter nojo de todo o mal que praticaram. 32 No entanto, lembrem-se sempre disto: não é por causa daquilo que são ou não são que faço isso, mas por minha causa. Ó meu povo de Israel, envergonhem-se profundamente por aquilo que fizeram!, diz o Senhor Deus.

33 O Senhor Deus diz: Quando vos limpar dos vossos pecados, vou trazer-vos de novo para a vossa terra, para Israel, e farei com que tudo seja reconstruído, a partir das ruínas que existem. 34 Campos que permaneceram, durante anos a fio, completamente assolados como uma terra no deserto, serão outra vez cultivados. 35 Todos os que por ali passavam ficavam chocados com a extensão das ruínas. Mas quando eu vos trouxer de novo para lá dirão: ‘Esta terra de que Deus se esqueceu, tornou-se como o jardim do Éden! As cidades arruinadas foram reconstruídas e estão cheias de habitantes!’ 36 Essas nações dos arredores, aquelas que conseguiram permanecer, saberão que eu, o Senhor, reedifico sobre ruínas e planto em terras devastadas ricas searas. Eu, o Senhor, o prometi! Eu próprio o realizarei!

37 Diz o Senhor Deus: Estou pronto a ouvir as orações de Israel, pedindo estas bênçãos e a responder-lhes, garantindo-lhes aquilo que pretendem. Basta apenas que peçam e multiplicá-los-ei como os imensos rebanhos 38 que enchem as ruas de Jerusalém em dias de sacrifício. As cidades arruinadas tornarão a encher-se de multidões e toda a gente verificará que eu sou o Senhor!"

1 Also, thou son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD: 2 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession: 3 Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the heathen, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are an infamy of the people:*36.3 Because: Heb. Because for because*36.3 are…: or, ye are made to come up on the lip of the tongue 4 Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith the Lord GOD to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes, and to the cities that are forsaken, which became a prey and derision to the residue of the heathen that are round about;*36.4 rivers: or, bottoms, or, dales 5 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey. 6 Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my fury, because ye have borne the shame of the heathen: 7 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I have lifted up mine hand, Surely the heathen that are about you, they shall bear their shame.

8 But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; for they are at hand to come. 9 For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown: 10 And I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded: 11 And I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bring fruit: and I will settle you after your old estates, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. 12 Yea, I will cause men to walk upon you, even my people Israel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance, and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them of men. 13 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because they say unto you, Thou land devourest up men, and hast bereaved thy nations; 14 Therefore thou shalt devour men no more, neither bereave thy nations any more, saith the Lord GOD.*36.14 bereave: or, cause to fall 15 Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the heathen any more, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the people any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nations to fall any more, saith the Lord GOD.

16 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 17 Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman. 18 Wherefore I poured my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it: 19 And I scattered them among the heathen, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them. 20 And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land.

21 But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went. 22 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went. 23 And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.*36.23 their: or, your 24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. 30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen. 31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. 32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel. 33 Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded. 34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by. 35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited. 36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it. 37 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock. 38 As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the LORD.*36.38 holy…: Heb. flock of holy things
