1 Portanto, se é realmente precioso o consolo que podemos obter em Cristo, se me transmite coragem a sincera afeição que vos tenho, se significa alguma coisa a comunhão espiritual que existe entre nós, através do Espírito de Deus, assim como aquele afeto que se estabelece entre crentes com a mesma fé, 2 então que tudo isto, que já me faz tão feliz, seja como que completado pela existência de uma relação perfeita, amando-vos uns aos outros, num sentimento igualmente sincero, concordando nos mesmos propósitos.

3 Não façam nada motivados por despique, nem por interesses pessoais, mas sejam humildes: que cada um considere os outros superiores a si mesmo. 4 Não pensem unicamente nos vossos interesses, mas procurem também aquilo que interessa aos outros.

5 Que haja em vocês a mesma atitude que houve em Cristo Jesus. 6 Sendo por natureza Deus, no entanto, não reivindicou para si o ser igual a Deus, 7 mas desfez-se das suas regalias próprias, assumindo a forma de um escravo e a semelhança humana. E, encontrando-se nessa condição, 8 humilhou-se a ponto de se sujeitar voluntariamente à morte; não a uma morte vulgar, mas à morte da cruz. 9 Por isso mesmo, Deus o elevou às posições mais altas e lhe deu um nome que é superior a todos os nomes, 10 de tal forma que, em honra desse nome, virão a ajoelhar-se todas as criaturas tanto no céu, como na Terra, como ainda debaixo da Terra. 11 E todos, igualmente, reconhecerão que Jesus Cristo é Senhor, o que será mais uma glória para Deus, o Pai!

12 Queridos irmãos, sempre seguiram cuidadosamente as minhas instruções, quando me encontrava no vosso meio. E agora, que estou ausente, devem ainda com maior cuidado desenvolver nas vossas vidas a salvação de Deus, obedecendo-lhe com profunda reverência e temor. 13 Porque é Deus quem trabalha em vocês, dando-vos o desejo de lhe obedecer e o poder de fazer o que lhe agrada.

14 Em tudo o que fizerem, evitem as queixas constantes, assim como os conflitos, 15 para que ninguém tenha nada a censurar-vos. Vivam vidas puras e sinceras como filhos de Deus, embora vivam no meio de uma humanidade corrompida e perversa, mas na qual resplandecem como os astros no firmamento. 16 Atenham-se à palavra da vida. Então, quando Cristo voltar, grande será a minha satisfação, verificando que não foi em vão o meu esforço, o meu trabalho no vosso meio. 17 E ainda que o meu sangue deva ser derramado, como fazendo parte do mesmo sacrifício a Deus que constitui o serviço da vossa fé, sinto-me feliz e quero compartilhar convosco a minha alegria. 18 Alegrem-se também comigo e participem da minha felicidade!

19 Espero, se for da vontade do Senhor Jesus, em breve poder enviar-vos Timóteo, para que, dando-me notícias vossas, isso me encoraje. 20 Porque não tenho aqui mais ninguém que tenha, como ele, um real interesse por vocês. 21 Pois em geral todos buscam os seus próprios interesses e não os de Cristo. 22 Quanto a Timóteo, conhecem-no bem e como tem colaborado comigo ao serviço do evangelho, com a dedicação de um filho para com o seu pai. 23 Espero poder enviá-lo logo que saiba melhor o que me vai acontecer aqui. 24 E confio no Senhor que também eu mesmo em breve irei ter convosco.

25 Para já, julguei necessário mandar-vos de volta o irmão Epafrodito, cooperador e companheiro nas lutas, comissionado por vós para suprir as minhas necessidades. 26 Ele sentia muitas saudades vossas. Também estava muito preocupado que tivessem ouvido que ele adoecera. 27 E de facto esteve mal, quase à morte, mas Deus teve misericórdia dele. E não só dele, mas também de mim, para que não fosse sobrecarregado com desgostos. 28 Por isso, apresso-me a enviá-lo, para que ao vê-lo de novo se sintam felizes, o que certamente irá diminuir as minhas preocupações. 29 Recebam-no, pois, com regozijo cristão. Tenham em grande estima pessoas como ele, 30 pois pela obra de Cristo chegou a estar bem próximo da morte. E se arriscou assim a vida, foi para fazer por mim aquilo que vos era impossível, por estarem longe.

1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. 17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.

19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. 20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s. 22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. 23 Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me. 24 But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly. 25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. 26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation: 30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
