1 Por sua vez Jacob, com todos os seus, também partiu para continuar a viagem. Os anjos de Deus vieram-lhe ao encontro. 2 Quando os viu, Jacob exclamou: "São do acampamento de Deus!" Por isso, chamou àquele sítio Maanaim.*32.2 Em hebraico, Maanaim significa dois acampamentos.

3 Jacob decidiu enviar mensageiros a Esaú, o seu irmão, a Edom, na terra de Seir, 4 com esta mensagem: "Saudações de Jacob. Tenho estado a viver com o nosso tio Labão até há pouco tempo; 5 agora tenho muitos bois, jumentos, ovelhas e muita criadagem, tanto homens como mulheres. Envio-te estes mensageiros para te informar da minha vinda, esperando poder contar com a tua amizade."

6 Os mensageiros voltaram com a notícia de que Esaú estava a caminho para se encontrar com Jacob, acompanhado dum exército de 400 homens. 7 Jacob ficou cheio de medo e angustiado, e repartiu a gente toda que vinha consigo, tal como os rebanhos, os bois e os camelos, em dois grupos; 8 porque pensou que se Esaú atacasse um dos grupos talvez o outro conseguisse escapar.

9 E orou desta maneira: "Ó Deus do meu avô Abraão e Deus do meu pai Isaque, ó Senhor, tu que me disseste para voltar à terra dos meus parentes e me garantiste que me farias bem; 10 realmente eu não sou digno de toda a bondade e fidelidade com que me tens tratado, conforme as tuas promessas. Porque quando deixei a minha casa e atravessei este rio Jordão nada tinha de meu, exceto um simples cajado! E agora tenho à minha responsabilidade estes dois grandes grupos. 11 Peço-te portanto, que me protejas das mãos destruidoras do meu irmão Esaú, pois estou com muito medo que nos venha matar, a mim e a estas mães e seus filhos. 12 Tu prometeste fazer-me bem e multiplicar os meus descendentes, de forma a tornarem-se tão numerosos como os grãos de areia das praias, que são incontáveis!"

13 Jacob passou ali aquela noite e preparou um presente para o seu irmão Esaú; 14 consistia no seguinte: 200 cabras, 20 bodes, 200 ovelhas, 20 carneiros, 15 camelos de leite, com as suas crias, 40 vacas, 10 bois, 20 jumentas, 10 jumentinhos. 16 Deu instruções aos criados para passarem adiante, mantendo separado cada grupo de animais, com uma certa distância entre cada um. 17 Ao que conduzia o primeiro grupo mandou que quando encontrasse Esaú e este lhe perguntasse: "De quem são estes animais? Para onde vais? Para quem estás a trabalhar?", 18 devia responder: "Estes animais são de Jacob que está às tuas ordens. São um presente que te envia a ti, Esaú, com todo o respeito e submissão. Ele próprio vem atrás de nós."

19,20 Estas mesmas instruções deu Jacob a cada um dos responsáveis pelos vários grupos de animais. A estratégia de Jacob era apaziguar o irmão com presentes, antes de se encontrar com ele cara a cara. "Talvez", esperava ele, "fique assim nosso amigo." 21 Dessa forma, os presentes foram passando à sua frente. Contudo, resolveu ficar ainda aquela noite no acampamento.

22,23 Durante a noite levantou-se, pegou nas duas mulheres, respetivas criadas e onze filhos e fê-los atravessar a ribeira de Jaboque com todos os seus bens.

24 Depois ficou sozinho no acampamento. E um homem lutou com ele até ao amanhecer. 25 Quando esse homem viu que não ganharia o combate, tocou na anca de Jacob, deslocando-lhe a juntura da coxa; 26 e disse-lhe: "Deixa-me ir embora, porque já está a amanhecer." Mas Jacob exigiu: "Não te deixarei enquanto não me abençoares!"

27 "Qual é o teu nome?", perguntou-lhe o homem. "Jacob", respondeu.

28 "Não serás mais Jacob, mas Israel (lutar com Deus). Porque como príncipe lutaste com Deus e com os seres humanos e prevaleceste!"

29 "Agora diz-me, qual é o teu nome?", perguntou Jacob por sua vez. "Porque perguntas pelo meu nome?" E abençoou-o ali mesmo.

30 Jacob chamou àquele lugar Peniel (a face de Deus), porque disse: "Vi Deus face a face, com os meus próprios olhos, e contudo não morri!" 31 Entretanto, o Sol já se levantava quando partiu enfim dali. E ia coxeando. 32 É por isso que o povo de Israel ainda hoje não come o nervo que faz a juntura com a coxa.

3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.*32.3 country: Heb. field 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now: 5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands; 8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.*32.10 I am not…: Heb. I am less than all 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.*32.11 with: Heb. upon 12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother; 14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, 15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals. 16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee? 18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us. 19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him. 20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.*32.20 of me: Heb. my face 21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.*32.23 sent them: Heb. caused to pass

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.*32.24 breaking…: Heb. ascending of the morning 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.*32.28 Israel: that is, A prince of God 29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.*32.30 Peniel: that is, The face of God 31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
