1 Jacob estabeleceu-se na terra de Canaã, onde o seu pai vivia.

2 Esta é a história de Jacob.

José, filho de Jacob, tinha agora 17 anos. A sua atividade era, na companhia dos seus irmãos filhos de Bila e de Zilpa, apascentar os rebanhos do pai. Contudo, José ia lhe contar as coisas más que os irmãos praticavam.

3 Israel preferia José aos outros filhos, porque nascera quando já tinha muita idade. Um dia, resolveu dar-lhe uma túnica de cores garridas. 4 Os irmãos deram-se conta da parcialidade do pai em relação a José e passaram a querer-lhe mal; eram incapazes de lhe falar com bons modos.

5 Certa noite José teve um sonho e foi contá-lo aos irmãos; estes, evidentemente, passaram a gostar ainda menos dele.

6 "Ouçam o meu sonho!", pediu-lhes. 7 "Estávamos no campo atando molhos e o meu ficou de pé, enquanto os vossos o rodeavam e se inclinavam perante ele!"

8 "Ah, sim? Então é porque queres ser o nosso rei, não é isso? Queres mandar na gente!" E odiaram-no, não só por causa do sentido do sonho, mas até pelas palavras e pela forma como contou aquilo.

9 Mais tarde, teve um novo sonho e foi de novo contá-lo aos irmãos: "Olhem, tive outro sonho! Desta vez era o Sol, a Lua e onze estrelas que se inclinavam na minha frente!" 10 Desta vez foi também contar o sonho ao pai. Este repreendeu-o: "Que é que isso quer dizer? Não me digas que eu, a tua mãe e os teus irmãos ainda viremos a inclinarmo-nos na tua presença!" 11 Os irmãos estavam furiosos; contudo o pai refletia intimamente no sentido daquilo.

12 Certa vez, os irmãos de José foram levar os rebanhos a pastar para os lados de Siquem.

13,14 Uns dias depois Israel chamou José e disse-lhe: "Os teus irmãos foram com os rebanhos para Siquem. Vai lá ver como estão, se anda tudo bem com os rebanhos, e vem me dizer."

"Pois sim!", respondeu. Assim, partiu do vale de Hebrom em direção a Siquem.

15 Um homem reparou que ele andava perdido por aquelas terras e perguntou-lhe o que é que procurava. 16 "Os meus irmãos e os rebanhos. Sabes onde estão?"

17 "Sim. Realmente já aqui não estão. Ouvi-os dizer que iam para Dotã." José seguiu nessa direção e encontrou-os ali. 18 Mas quando eles o viram aproximar-se, tendo-o reconhecido à distância, combinaram matá-lo.

19 "Cá vem o sonhador-mor! 20 Vamos matá-lo e lançamo-lo num destes poços sem água e dizemos ao pai que foi uma fera que o comeu; veremos o que é feito dos seus sonhos!"

21 Rúben, porém, queria poupar-lhe a vida: "Não, não lhe tiremos a vida; 22 não vamos derramar sangue; lancemo-lo apenas no poço e assim virá a morrer sem que lhe toquemos." Porque tinha a intenção de ir lá depois tirá-lo e entregá-lo ao pai.

23 Quando José chegou junto deles, tiraram-lhe a túnica de cores garridas 24 e lançaram-no dentro dum poço que não tinha água. 25 Depois foram comer. De repente, repararam numa caravana de camelos que se aproximava, vindo na sua direção; eram negociantes ismaelitas que transportavam especiarias, bálsamo e mirra, de Gileade para o Egito.

26 "Ouçam lá", disse Judá aos outros, "e se vendêssemos José a estes ismaelitas. Porque haveríamos de o matar e ficar com esse peso na consciência? 27 É muito melhor isso do que ficarmos com a responsabilidade da sua morte; vendo bem as coisas, sempre é nosso irmão!" E os outros concordaram. 28 Assim, quando os ismaelitas, que eram comerciantes midianitas, chegaram, os irmãos de José tiraram-no do poço e venderam-no por vinte peças de prata, tendo sido levado, dessa forma, para o Egito.

29 Entretanto, Rúben, que não se encontrava presente quando o irmão foi vendido, veio ao poço para tirar de lá José. Quando verificou que já ali não estava, rasgou as roupas que vestia.

30 "Desapareceu o moço! E agora, o que é que eu faço?", lamentava-se junto dos irmãos. 31 Estes mataram um bode, sujaram com o sangue a túnica de José 32 e mandaram-na para o pai, pedindo-lhe que a identificasse.

"Encontrámos esta túnica. Não será a do teu filho José?" 33 O pai reconheceu-a imediatamente.

"Sim, é a túnica do meu filho. Foi certamente um animal feroz que o desfez em pedaços e o tragou."

34 Então Israel rasgou as suas vestimentas; envolveu o corpo com saco e lamentou e chorou a morte do filho durante muitas semanas. 35 A família bem tentava consolá-lo, mas era em vão.

"Quero continuar de luto até descer ao mundo dos mortos*37.35 No hebraico, Sheol, é traduzido, ao longo do livro, por mundo dos mortos. 36 Enquanto isto, no Egito os negociantes venderam José a Potifar, alta individualidade da corte do Faraó, chefe militar da sua casa e responsável pelo palácio real.

23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;*37.23 colours: or, pieces 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. 31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning.
