1 A fé é a firme certeza das coisas que se esperam; é a evidência daquilo que ainda não vemos. 2 Foi porque tiveram essa fé que os antigos homens de Deus receberam o testemunho da sua aprovação.

3 É a fé que nos dá a entender que o mundo inteiro foi criado pela palavra de Deus; que o que existe foi criado a partir do que se não vê!

4 Foi a fé que inspirou Abel a oferecer a Deus um sacrifício mais agradável do que o de Caim. Aceitando a sua oferta, Deus mostrou a Abel que era declarado justo. Ainda que já esteja morto, Abel continua a falar-nos.

5 Pela fé, Enoque foi levado para o céu sem experimentar a morte. Um dia deixaram de o ver porque Deus o tinha levado. Sobre ele foi escrito que agradou a Deus.*11.5 Gn 5.24.6 Ora, sem fé é impossível agradar a Deus. É necessário que quem se aproximar dele creia que ele existe e que recompensa os que sinceramente o buscam.

7 Pela fé, Noé creu, quando Deus o avisou de coisas que ainda estavam para acontecer e, consciente da sua gravidade, começou a construir a arca na qual salvou a sua família. Esse ato de fé foi como a condenação dos que não quiseram aceitar aquele aviso. E assim Noé obteve o direito de ser justificado pela fé.

8 Pela fé, Abraão obedeceu, quando Deus o chamou, e partiu para uma terra que lhe prometia dar como uma herança. E foi sem saber para onde ia. 9 Sempre em resultado da sua fé, aceitou habitar nessa outra terra como um estrangeiro, vivendo em tendas, tal como Isaque e Jacob, aos quais Deus fez também a mesma promessa. 10 É que Abraão esperava aquela cidade solidamente estabelecida, cujo arquiteto e construtor é Deus.

11 Pela fé, Sara, mulher de Abraão, pôde ter um filho, apesar da sua idade avançada, pois teve por digno de fé aquele que o tinha prometido. 12 E foi assim que uma nação inteira veio de Abraão, velho demais para ter filhos. E o facto é que dele descenderam tantos milhões quantas as estrelas do firmamento, ou os grãos de areia à beira mar!

13 Todas estas pessoas viveram na fé e morreram sem terem visto o cumprimento das promessas; mas foi como se as vissem de longe e, crendo nelas, aceitaram-nas. Reconheciam que aqui na Terra eram estrangeiros, vivendo de passagem. 14 E os que reconhecem isto mostram claramente que buscam a sua verdadeira pátria. 15 Se tivessem querido, teriam podido voltar à terra donde tinham saído. 16 Mas não. Tinham em vista uma terra muito melhor, um país celestial. Por isso, Deus não se envergonha de ser considerado o seu Deus, porque lhes preparou uma cidade.

17 Pela fé, Abraão ofereceu em sacrifício o seu filho Isaque, quando Deus quis provar a sua fé a obediência. É verdade! Ele tomou o seu único filho, que era o cumprimento da promessa de Deus, para o oferecer em sacrifício. 18 De facto, Deus tinha-lhe dito: "Só através de Isaque é que a minha promessa terá cumprimento."*11.18 Gn 21.12.19 Mas Abraão sabia que Deus era poderoso até para o ressuscitar! E, metaforicamente, foi isso que aconteceu: foi como se o ressuscitasse.

20 Pela fé, Isaque abençoou Jacob e Esaú, garantindo-lhes coisas que diziam respeito ao futuro. 21 Pela fé, Jacob, já próximo de morrer, abençoou cada um dos filhos de José. E, apoiado ao seu bordão, adorou a Deus.

22 Pela fé, José, igualmente no final da sua vida, falou da saída do povo de Israel do Egito, dando ordens sobre os seus restos mortais.

23 Pela fé, os pais de Moisés esconderam-no durante três meses, depois de nascer. Viram que era uma criança formosa e não temeram a ordem do rei.

24 Pela fé, o mesmo Moisés, já homem feito, renunciou ao título de filho da filha do Faraó, 25 escolhendo antes ser maltratado com o povo de Deus do que, por um tempo limitado, gozar de uma vivência onde reinava o pecado. 26 Preferiu sofrer o desprezo, por amor a Cristo, achando que isso era um bem superior às riquezas do Egito, porque tinha em vista a recompensa. 27 Pela fé, deixou o Egito sem temer a ira do rei, mantendo-se firme, como vendo aquele que é invisível. 28 Pela fé, celebrou a Páscoa e mandou aspergir o sangue do animal para que, quando o anjo destruidor viesse matar os filhos mais velhos, fossem poupados os das famílias de Israel.

29 Pela fé, atravessaram os israelitas o mar Vermelho como se fosse terra seca. E quando os egípcios tentaram fazer o mesmo, morreram afogados.

30 Pela fé, caíram as muralhas de Jericó, depois do povo de Israel ter marchado à volta delas por sete dias.

31 Pela fé, Raabe, que era meretriz, recebeu em paz os israelitas enviados para espiar a cidade, e não morreu com os que não acreditavam no Senhor.

32 De quem hei de falar mais? Faltar-me-ia o tempo se quisesse ainda falar de Gedeão, de Baraque, de Sansão, de Jefté, de David, de Samuel, dos profetas. 33 São pessoas que pela fé conquistaram reinos, praticaram a justiça, obtiveram a realização das promessas, fecharam a boca de leões, 34 anularam a força do fogo, escaparam de morrer à espada, da fraqueza tiraram forças, foram valentes nas batalhas, fizeram recuar exércitos estrangeiros. 35 Houve mulheres que receberam os seus entes queridos ressuscitados. Outros foram torturados, preferindo morrer a ficarem livres, porque esperavam, pela ressurreição, alcançar uma vida melhor. 36 Outros foram ridicularizados, açoitados, acorrentados em prisões. 37,38 Alguns morreram apedrejados, serrados ao meio; outros foram tentados a renegar a sua fé, acabando por ser mortos à espada. Houve os que andaram vagueando pelos desertos e pelas montanhas, vestidos de peles de ovelha e de cabra, escondendo-se em covas e em cavernas, sem amparo, perseguidos e maltratados. O mundo não era digno deles.

39 Todos estes, apesar do testemunho de que tiveram fé, não receberam o que lhes tinha sido prometido. 40 Porque Deus tinha reservado para nós coisas melhores e queria que eles viessem também a participar delas juntamente connosco.

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment. 24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. 28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. 29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. 31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. 32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: 33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
