1 Eis outra mensagem do Senhor a Jeremias. 2 "Desce até à casa do oleiro, o que faz os objetos e os recipientes de barro, e ali falarei contigo." 3 Fiz como me foi dito e encontrei o oleiro a trabalhar na roda como habitualmente. 4 Como o jarro que estava a formar não saiu como ele queria, tornou a amassar aquele barro, recomeçando o trabalho.

5 Então o Senhor disse-me: 6 "Ó Israel, não poderei eu fazer contigo o que este oleiro fez com o pote de barro? Na verdade, tal como o barro nas mãos do oleiro, assim és tu nas minhas mãos! 7 Sempre que eu anunciar que uma certa nação, ou um reino qualquer, irá ser tomada e destruída, 8 se essa nação renunciar aos seus maus caminhos, não a destruirei, conforme planeara. 9 Se, por outro lado, proclamar que tornarei uma certa nação grande e forte, 10 se esta alterar a sua atitude, se voltar para o mal e recusar obedecer-me, então também mudarei de atitude e não abençoarei essa nação como dissera antes.

11 Portanto, vai advertir Judá e Jerusalém dizendo: ‘Ouçam a palavra do Senhor! Estou a planear coisas más e não coisas boas contra vocês! Convertam-se dos vossos maus caminhos e façam o que é reto!’ 12 Mas responderão: ‘Não percas o teu tempo! Não estamos minimamente interessados em fazer o que Deus diz! Continuaremos a viver como nos apetece, livres de restrições, cheios de rebeldia e de maldade!’ "

13 Por isso, o Senhor responde-lhes: "Mesmo entre os pagãos, nunca se ouviu coisa semelhante! O meu povo fez algo demasiado horrível para ser compreendido! 14 A neve no cimo das altas montanhas do Líbano nunca se derrete. As frias e caudalosas torrentes que descem por entre os penhascos do monte Hermon nunca secam. 15 Com estes pode-se contar, mas com o meu povo não! Porque me deixaram para se voltarem para a loucura dos ídolos. Abandonaram a antiga estrada do bem e ingressaram nos lamacentos caminhos do pecado. 16 Por isso, a sua terra ficará assolada, para que todos os que por lá passarem abram a boca de espanto e abanem as cabeças, perante tão completa destruição. 17 Dispersarei o povo por entre os inimigos, tal como o vento oriental levanta e espalha a poeira; durante toda essa angústia, voltar-lhe-ei as costas, recusando saber da sua tristeza e perdição."

18 Então o povo disse: "Vamos livrar-nos deste Jeremias! Temos os nossos próprios sacerdotes, sábios e profetas, não precisamos das suas opiniões! Vamos silenciá-lo, de forma a não falar mais contra a gente, nem a nos incomodar mais!"

19 Ó Senhor, escuta-me! Vê o que eles estão a planear contra mim! 20 Será que vão mesmo pagar-me o bem com o mal? Tramaram ciladas contra mim, apesar de te ter falado bem deles e tentado defendê-los da tua ira severa. 21 Por isso, que os seus filhos lhes morram de fome e que a espada lhes derrame o sangue até à última gota! Que as suas mulheres se tornem viúvas e percam os filhos! Que os seus homens morram de epidemias e os jovens na batalha! 22 Que se ouçam os gritos de aflição saindo das casas, quando o inimigo cair de repente sobre eles, pois pretendem cavar uma armadilha para que eu caia nela; armaram-me ciladas ao longo do caminho. 23 Senhor, conheces bem os planos assassinos que conspiram contra mim! Não lhes perdoes, não apagues o seu pecado, mas que todos pereçam perante ti! Trata-os segundo a tua cólera!

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.*18.3 wheels: or, frames, or, seats 4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.*18.4 of clay…: or, was marred, as clay in the hand of the potter*18.4 made it…: Heb. returned and made, etc 5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. 7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; 8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. 9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; 10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good. 12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart. 13 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. 14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?*18.14 the snow…: or, my fields for a rock, or for the snow of Lebanon? shall the running waters be forsaken for the strange cold waters? 15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up; 16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head. 17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.*18.18 with…: or, for the tongue 19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. 20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul.
