1 A seguinte mensagem foi dada a Jeremias, da parte do Senhor, no décimo ano do reinado de Zedequias, rei de Judá, que era também o décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Nabucodonozor. 2 Nessa ocasião Jeremias estava encarcerado no calabouço da cave do palácio e durante esse tempo o exército da Babilónia cercava Jerusalém. 3 O rei Zedequias tinha-o mandado prender, sob a acusação de ter profetizado: "O Senhor entregará a cidade nas mãos do rei da Babilónia e este a conquistará! 4 O rei Zedequias será levado como prisioneiro à presença do rei da Babilónia, para ser julgado e sentenciado.

5 Ele levará Zedequias para a Babilónia e o meterá na prisão por muitos anos, até que o Senhor se lembre dele. Porquê contestar factos? Vocês não poderão vencer!" Estas foram as palavras que Jeremias lhe falou repetidamente.

6 Então veio esta mensagem do Senhor a Jeremias: 7 "Teu primo Hanameel, filho de Salum, virá em breve ter contigo para te pedir que lhe compres a propriedade que tem em Anatote, porque pela Lei tens direito a adquiri-la, antes que outros se proponham transacioná-la."

8 Com efeito, Hanameel apareceu, como o Senhor tinha predito. Veio ver-me à prisão e disse-me: "Compra a minha propriedade de Anatote, na terra de Benjamim, porque tens o direito de a adquirires, perante a lei." Foi assim que me dei conta de que efetivamente a mensagem que tinha recebido vinha do Senhor.

9 E comprei-lhe o terreno, pagando-lhe 200 gramas de prata. 10 Assinei e selei o contrato de compra perante testemunhas, tendo pesado a prata que lhe entreguei logo. 11 Seguidamente, tomei o contrato de compra, já selado e contendo os termos e as condições da transação, e a sua cópia sem selo, 12 e publicamente, na presença de todos, do meu primo Hanameel e das testemunhas que tinham também assinado o contrato, e igualmente perante os guardas da prisão, entreguei esses documentos a Baruque, filho de Nerias e neto de Maaseias. 13 Depois disso, sendo que todos me escutavam, disse estas palavras:

14 "O Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: ‘Pega nesse contrato selado e na sua cópia e coloca-os num jarro, para que se conservem intactos durante muito tempo. 15 Porque o Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: No futuro, estes documentos serão de muita validade. Virão dias em que o povo tornará a adquirir propriedades nesta terra, em que comprará e venderá casas, vinhas e campos.’

16 Então, depois de ter dado os documentos a Baruque, orei assim:

17 Ó Senhor Deus! Tu fizeste os céus e a Terra pelo teu grande e forte braço! Nada é demasiado difícil para ti! 18 Tu és bom e misericordioso para milhares! Ainda que os filhos sofram pelos pecados dos pais, és o grande e poderoso Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos! 19 Em ti está toda a sabedoria e fazes milagres espantosos, de grande alcance, pois os teus olhos estão abertos sobre todos os caminhos, todas as condutas dos filhos dos homens, e dás a cada um de acordo com a vida que tem e os atos que pratica. 20 Fizeste coisas incríveis no Egito, coisas que continuam sempre a ser lembradas e celebradas. Aliás, continuas a fazer grandes milagres em Israel e em todo o mundo. Deste ao teu nome fama e prestígio, como hoje se vê. 21 Trouxeste Israel para fora do Egito por meio de atos extraordinários, sobrenaturais, com demonstrações de grande poder e espanto. 22 Deste depois a Israel esta terra que tinhas prometido aos seus antepassados muito tempo antes, uma terra maravilhosa onde jorra leite e mel. 23 Nossos pais vieram, conquistaram-na e viveram aqui; contudo, recusaram obedecer-te e seguir a tua Lei; nada fizeram daquilo que lhes tinha ordenado e foi por isso que lhes enviaste todo este terrível mal.

24 Vejam só estes baluartes com que o inimigo sitia a cidade e como se aproxima ofensivamente das muralhas! Os caldeus acabarão por conquistar a cidade pela espada, pela fome e pela peste! Desta forma, tudo aconteceu como tinhas dito e como estava determinado que acontecesse! 25 Apesar de tudo isto, tu, Senhor Deus, disseste-me que comprasse o campo e que pagasse o dinheiro pedido por ele, perante testemunhas, num ato legal, embora a cidade esteja já praticamente entregue nas mãos dos nossos inimigos."

26 Então veio esta mensagem a Jeremias.

27 "Eu sou o Senhor, o Deus de toda a humanidade! Haverá, por acaso, alguma coisa demasiado difícil de realizar para mim? 28 Sim, com certeza que darei esta cidade aos caldeus, a Nabucodonozor, o seu rei e ele há de conquistá-la. 29 Os soldados que estão de fora entrarão, porão fogo à cidade e queimarão todas esta habitações, cujos telhados serviram para oferecer incenso a Baal e para fazer libações a outros deuses, provocando assim a minha ira! 30 Porque Israel e Judá só souberam praticar o mal, desde os primeiros tempos, e enfureceram-me com todos os seus atos pecaminosos. 31 Desde o tempo em que esta cidade foi construída até agora, não têm feito senão suscitar a minha cólera, e por isso estou decidido a lançá-los fora da minha presença.

32 O povo de Israel e de Judá têm provocado a minha ira devido a todo o pecado praticado, tanto o povo como os seus reis, governantes responsáveis pela administração pública, sacerdotes e até os seus profetas, assim como todas as pessoas de Judá e todos os habitantes de Jerusalém. 33 Voltaram-me as costas e recusam converter-se; dia após dia, ano após ano, ensinei-os a distinguir o bem do mal, mas não querem ouvir-me e obedecer. 34 Contaminam o meu próprio templo, prestando adoração, aqui mesmo, aos seus abomináveis ídolos. 35 Edificaram enormes santuários pagãos a Baal no vale de Ben-Hinom. Ali queimaram os filhos em sacrifício ao deus Moloque, coisa que nunca os mandei fazer. Nem me passou pela mente que fizessem tal abominação. Que tremenda e incrível maldade, ter feito Judá pecar dessa maneira!

36 Por isso, agora o Senhor Deus de Israel diz a respeito desta cidade que cairá nas mãos do rei da Babilónia, através da guerra, da fome e da pestilência. 37 Contudo, tornará a trazer o povo de volta dos países para onde a sua cólera os dispersou. Tornarei a trazê-los para esta mesma cidade e farei com que vivam em paz e segurança. 38 Serão o meu povo e eu serei o seu Deus. 39 Dar-lhes-ei um só coração e uma só mente, para que me temam para sempre, para seu próprio bem e para a felicidade dos seus descendentes.

40 Farei com eles uma aliança eterna em como nunca mais os abandonarei e que só lhes farei bem. Porei um só desejo no seu coração, o de me temer, e nunca mais me deixarão. 41 Terei alegria em lhes fazer bem; tornarei a plantá-los nesta terra com grande alegria.

42 Assim como lhes enviei todos estes terrores e males, assim também depois lhes farei todo o bem que prometi. 43 As terras tornarão a ser compradas e vendidas, terras das quais vocês dizem: ‘Eis que a nossa terra, donde os homens e animais desapareceram, está agora desvastada pelos caldeus!’ 44 Sim, os campos serão novamente transacionados e os respetivos contratos selados perante testemunhas, tanto na terra de Benjamim como aqui na zona de Jerusalém, nas cidades de Judá, na região das planícies; tanto na planície da Filisteia como no Negueve. Há de vir o tempo em que restaurarei a sua prosperidade."

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper.

6 And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 7 Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. 8 So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.*32.9 seventeen…: or, seven shekels and ten pieces of silver 10 And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.*32.10 subscribed…: Heb. wrote in the book 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open: 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.

13 And I charged Baruch before them, saying, 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days. 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.

16 Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying, 17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:*32.17 too…: or, hid from thee 18 Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name, 19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:*32.19 work: Heb. doing 20 Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day; 21 And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror; 22 And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey; 23 And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them: 24 Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.*32.24 mounts: or, engines of shot 25 And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.*32.25 for the: or, though the

26 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, 27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: 29 And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. 31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,*32.31 a provocation…: Heb. for my anger 32 Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.*32.33 back: Heb. neck 34 But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it. 35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

36 And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:*32.39 for ever: Heb. all days 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.*32.40 from them: Heb. from after them 41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.*32.41 assuredly: Heb. in truth, or, stability 42 For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. 43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.
