1 Esta é a mensagem do Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, contra Moabe:

"Ai da cidade de Nebo, porque há de ficar em ruínas! A cidade de Quiriataim e as suas fortalezas serão vencidas e capturadas. 2 Ninguém mais se gabará de Moabe, porque existe uma conspiração contra a sua existência. Em Hesbom foram estudados planos para a destruir. ‘Venham!’, dizem eles. ‘Vamos fazer com que deixe de ser uma nação!’ Em Madmem tudo está silencioso, pois o inimigo atacou. 3 Então ouvir-se-á o ruído da batalha contra Horonaim! Que grande destruição! 4 Pois toda a Moabe será destruída. Ouve-se o clamor dos seus filhinhos, mesmo em Zoar. 5 Os seus refugiados irão subindo as colinas de Luite, chorando de amargura, enquanto em baixo, na cidade, se ouvem os gritos de terror. 6 Fujam para livrar a vida! Escondam-se no deserto! 7 Confiaram no vosso bem-estar e nas vossas capacidades, por isso mesmo agora hão de perecer. O vosso deus Quemós com os seus sacerdotes e nobres serão levados para terras distantes!

8 Todas as cidades e as aldeias que estejam em planícies ou em vales serão destruídas. Foi o Senhor quem o disse. 9 Oh! Deem asas a Moabe, para que possa fugir a voar, pois as suas povoações serão deixadas sem uma só alma vivente.

10 Maldito aquele que se recusar a banhar a sua espada no vosso sangue, recusando executar o trabalho que Deus lhe ordenou!

11 Desde os primeiros tempos da sua história, Moabe tem vivido sem ser incomodada com invasões. Era semelhante ao vinho que não foi caldeado de vasilha para vasilha e que mantém a sua fragância e suavidade. 12 Agora sim, terá de ser derramada para o exílio! Breve virá o tempo em que o Senhor, conforme já prometeu, lhe enviará agitadores que a farão passar de jarro para jarro e que, por fim, ainda partirão esses jarros! 13 Moabe terá vergonha do seu ídolo Quemós, tal como Israel se envergonhou também do seu ídolo em forma de bezerro lá em Betel.

14 Lembram-se da vossa gabarolice, ao dizerem: ‘Nós somos heróis, poderosos homens de guerra!’? 15 Mas agora Moabe terá de ser destruída e o seu destruidor vem já a caminho; a sua melhor juventude está fatalmente ameaçada de ser degolada, diz o Rei, o Senhor dos exércitos. 16 A calamidade está a vir rapidamente e em força a Moabe. 17 Ó amigos de Moabe, chorem por ela; lamentem-na e digam: ‘Vejam como esse belo cetro foi esmigalhado!’

18 Desce da tua glória e senta-te no pó da terra, ó povo de Dibom, pois aqueles que vão destruir Moabe esmigalharão igualmente Dibom, deitando abaixo todas as suas torres. 19 A gente de Aroer põe-se ansiosamente à beira da estrada à espera e grita alto para os que vão fugindo de Moabe: ‘O que foi que aconteceu lá?’

20 E a resposta é: ‘Moabe está em ruínas. Chorem e lastimem-se! Digam nas margens do Arnom que Moabe está arrasada!’

21 Todas as povoações do planalto estão igualmente desvastadas, porque o julgamento de Deus caiu também sobre elas, sobre Holom, Jaaz, Mefaate, 22 Dibom, Nebo, Bete-Diblataim, 23 Quiriataim, Bete-Gamul, Bete-Meom, 24 Queriote, Bozra, e todas as outras localidades da terra de Moabe, de perto e de longe.

25 Acabou-se a força de Moabe, o seu poder foi-lhe cortado; a eficácia dos seus braços foi-lhe quebrada, diz o Senhor.

26 Façam-na embriagar-se, pois se rebelou contra o Senhor. Acabará por se espojar sobre o seu próprio vomitado; é objeto de escárnio de toda a gente. 27 Pois Israel não foi também ridicularizado? Porventura não o trataste como se tivesse sido apanhado com um bando de ladrões e sacudido a cabeça em sinal de zombaria? 28 Ó povo de Moabe, foge das povoações onde habitas e vai viver para as cavidades das rochas, para as grutas, como as pombas que fazem os ninhos nas fendas das ravinas.

29 Todos ouvimos já falar do orgulho de Moabe, que é muito grande. Conhecemos bem a sua altivez, a sua arrogância, o seu coração enfatuado. 30 Conheço perfeitamente a sua insolência, diz o Senhor, mas todas as suas gabarolices são falsas, não correspondem a nada, o seu desamparo é enorme. 31 Sim, lamentarei Moabe, o meu coração confrange-se pela gente de Quir-Heres.

32 Ó habitantes de Sibma, rica como é em vinhas, choro por vocês, mais ainda do que por Jazer. Porque o destruidor cortou-vos os primeiros rebentos, ceifou todos os cachos, todos os frutos do verão. 33 Depenou-vos inteiramente, deixou-vos vazios. Já não há nem alegria, nem contentamento algum pelos frutos da terra de Moabe. Os lagares já não escorrem vinho nenhum; ninguém mais pisa uvas no meio da jovialidade. 34 Em vez disso, só se ouvem berros horríveis de terror e de sofrimento por toda a terra, desde Hesbom até Eleale e até Jaaz; desde Zoar até Horonaim e até Eglate-Selichia. As pastagens de Nimrim já estão desertas." 35 Porque o Senhor diz assim: "Pus finalmente um travão à adoração de falsos deuses, que se fazia em Moabe, e ao queimar incenso a ídolos. 36 O meu coração está triste, como o som triste da flauta dos pranteadores, por causa de Moabe e de Quir-Heres, porque toda a abundância que tinham chegado a juntar desapareceu. 37 Já andam a rapar as cabeças e as barbas, por causa da angústia que os aperta; golpeiam as mãos e vestem-se de pano de serapilheira. 38 Em cada casa, em cada rua moabita, ouve-se apenas choro e vozes de pesar, porque eu quebrei e esmigalhei Moabe como se fosse um pote de barro velho e inútil, diz o Senhor. 39 Está em pedaços! Escutem os lamentos! Vejam a vergonha de Moabe! Tornou-se um símbolo de horror e ao mesmo tempo de troça para os vizinhos.

40 Uma águia desce em círculos de mau agouro sobre Moabe, diz o Senhor. 41 Foram tomadas as suas cidades, as fortalezas ocupadas. O coração dos mais valentes guerreiros desfalece de medo, como se fossem mulheres em ânsias para dar à luz. 42 Moabe não será mais uma nação, porque se tornou ousada contra o Senhor. 43 Temores, ciladas e enganos é o que te caberá em sorte, ó Moabe, diz o Senhor. 44 Aquele que quiser escapar cairá numa armadilha e o que conseguir safar-se duma armadilha acabará por ser apanhado numa rede. Hei de estar atento para que não escapes, pois chegou a tua vez de seres julgada, diz o Senhor.

45 Fogem para Hesbom, incapazes de ir mais longe, mas um fogo sai de Hesbom, o lar ancestral de Siom, que devora a terra, duma extremidade à outra, com todo o seu povo rebelde.

46 Ai de ti, Moabe! Porque o povo de Quemós está destruído e os seus filhos e filhas são levados como escravos.

47 Mas nos últimos dias, diz o Senhor, tornarei a restabelecer Moabe."

Aqui termina a profecia respeitante a Moabe.

7 For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together. 8 And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken. 9 Give wings unto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein. 10 Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.*48.10 deceitfully: or, negligently

11 Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.*48.11 remained: Heb. stood 12 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will send unto him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles. 13 And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Beth-el their confidence.

14 How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war? 15 Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.*48.15 his…: Heb. the choice of 16 The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast. 17 All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod! 18 Thou daughter that dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holds. 19 O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done?*48.19 inhabitant: Heb. inhabitress 20 Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled, 21 And judgment is come upon the plain country; upon Holon, and upon Jahazah, and upon Mephaath, 22 And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblathaim, 23 And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon, 24 And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near. 25 The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the LORD.

26 Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision. 27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.*48.27 skippedst…: or, movedst thyself 28 O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth. 29 We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart. 30 I know his wrath, saith the LORD; but it shall not be so; his lies shall not so effect it.*48.30 his lies…: or, those on whom he stayeth (Heb. his bars) do not right 31 Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall mourn for the men of Kir-heres. 32 O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage. 33 And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall be no shouting. 34 From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.*48.34 desolate: Heb. desolations 35 Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods. 36 Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: because the riches that he hath gotten are perished. 37 For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.*48.37 clipped: Heb. diminished 38 There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the LORD. 39 They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.*48.39 back: Heb. neck 40 For thus saith the LORD; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab. 41 Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.*48.41 Kerioth: or, The cities 42 And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the LORD. 43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the LORD. 44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the LORD. 45 They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.*48.45 tumultuous…: Heb. children of noise 46 Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.*48.46 captives, and: Heb. in captivity, etc

47 Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
